3 Hospitalized, Route 24 Closed after Crash

The Wednesday morning crash is snarling the rush hour commute in Bel Air.

Three people were taken to a local hospital, including one in "grave condition," after a crash in Bel Air Wednesday morning, according to Rich Gardiner, spokesman for Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.

The collision was reported around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday in the area of Wheel Road at Route 24.

Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company said its crew assisted the Abingdon Fire Department with a rescue in which one person was extricated using the jaws of life.

Route 24 traffic is being diverted onto Tollgate Road as of 9:15 a.m., Gardiner said.

I still try to figure out how accidents can happen on a clear, sunny day!

People just don't give full-time attention to driving, ie; yakking or texting on a cell phone.

That's why they are called 'accidents'. Sunshine or not.

Yeah, I guess cause nobody texts, nobody eats in their car, nobody does stupid shit when the sun is shining. No red lights or stop signs are ever ran. No body speeds or drives reckless, when it's clear out. I just can't figure it out either. Sheesh!

That's an easy answer. It's because they're accidents. Nobody means to ruin their perfectly sunny day.

Thank you, this was my cousin who was killed. I pray for the other driver that it was truely an accident and not some reckless person who just wasn't paying attention. This is tragic. We are heartbroken.

They are not accidents. An accident is when a meteor or the like falls on you or your car. When someone does something wrong, on the highway, and runs into someone else or runs off the road, it becomes a crash. All crashes can be prevented, if drivers will just pay attention.

So when your tire blows out or when your brakes fail or if something else happens that you aren't expecting and you crash, it's because the driver isn't paying attention? And if there's a medical emergency, the driver should have been paying attention? No. Accidents do exist. That's why they're called accidents. You're a moron.

Indded Nicole that 1% of the time there's some other explanation but we all know that 99% of the time it's pure selfishness and stupidity. Being a self-absorbed moron and putting other people's lives at risk shouldn't be labeled an accident.

There are so many serious accidents at the intersection.... I have never been able to figure out why... I honestly avoid that intersection at all cost.

Tires blowing, brakes failing? Uhhhh....your fault for not maintaining your vehicle. I agree. No such thing as an accident.

That is such a ridiculous statement. If a tire blows or brakes fail, it's the car owners fault? And a new car has NEVER had a tire blowout or brakes fail? Ask Goodyear and Toyota if they agree. Very sad that someone lost their life and you make irrational statements like that.

To think a wonderful person is lost & there are so many useless idiots that will keep going on. Just Sayin...........
Yes, per the earlier comments, preventive maintenance of YOUR vehicle is YOUR responsibility& a failure that causes an incident , however minor or major is YOUR fault. NOT an accident. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR IT !
That is a dangerous intersection as are many along Rt 24. People drive through the area well above the 55 mph speed limit & yes, the morning glare from the sun can be very bad all through the area. The vehicle that hit her was from Rhode Island I believe . So sad & was avoidable if PEOPLE JUST WOULD PAY MORE ATTENTION WHILE DRIVING. Get the hell off of your phone & drive. This is for the Police too. I see them talking on the phone everywhere.
Prayers to this wonderful woman & her family.

The Dagger reported that a driver on Rt.24 drove through a red light, hitting a car crossing Wheel Rd. That would have put the impact directly on the driver side.

My wife and I drive through there so many times each day, I guess we need to start making sure people are actually coming to a stop before we go through the intersections around here.

I can not believe all of the insensitive, uncaring, inhumane remarks left here about there being no such thing as an accident?! What have we become that we as a human race have such little compassion for others? A PERSON, a MOTHER, a WIFE, a DAUGHTER a FRIEND lost her life and others were involved and possibly hurt. Why can we not first feel compassion and concern instead of automatically judging others. Are we all so seriously self absorbed that we want to blame someone for what happened istead of just asking GOD to comfort those who will forever feel the loss of what happened? SAD!!!

Yes, apparently the dumb arse from RI ran a red light. That's not an accident; that's pure neglect. She needs to be brought up on manslaughter charges, cuffed and booked as soon as her sorry arse leaves the hospital. I think we do feel compassion for the lady you refer to but if not for the horrific stupidity of another she's have made it to work and been home in time to make dinner just like every other day. We don't let drunk drivers go, but seldom throw the book at people for inattentiveness - both can be deadly.

My hubby told me years ago never to pull out from a side road onto 24 without looking both ways to make sure everyone has come to a stop. I am not placing the blame on the driver who lost her life, just asking people to please take a moment before taking off from any green light, especially along 24. I've had people blow their horn at me for not jumping out as soon as the light turns green, but if it saves my life or the life of my children, oh well.

I don't drive that stretch of road in the morning but in the 20+ years we have lived in this area we have seen so many accidents along Rt. 24, especially at the intersections between Bel Air South Parkway and Tollgate Road. Such a tragedy, I understand she was an amazing woman and will most definitely be missed by many.

@ Karl ~ Check your facts on drunk drivers! We live in such a liberal state that drunk drivers rarely get the punishment they deserve. My Grandmothers life was take 12 years ago by a drunk driver on her way home from the hospital where my Grandfather had just passed away, we lost them both within hours of each other. The driver served less than 5 months in jail and he was allowed to do work release "because he had a family". Twelve years later, he's free to live his life and we're left with a hole in our family where an amazing woman should be! A generation of our family will grow up without knowing the love of this amazing woman, as will the family of the victim in this tragedy.

The man is an 82 yo retiree from RI with a residence in Fla, I'm not saying all 82 yo's need to give up their license, I'm just saying we need to make sure they are capable of making good decisions and can still see the road, in this case something terrible happened , and now my cousin and nephews have lost their wife and mother... so sad!
