UPDATE: Bel Air Man Cut During Home Invasion

The incident took place Sunday in the Thomas Run area of Bel Air.

UPDATED (5:20 p.m.)—A Bel Air man was cut during an altercation with a burglar in the back yard of his home early Sunday morning.

The incident took place at approximately 6:15 a.m. Sunday in the 1800 block of Glendale Lane, where a woman reported to her husband that she heard noises in the basement of their townhome, according to a news release from the Harford County Sheriff's Office. The husband went to the basement, where he saw someone outside the basement door, police said.

Then, police said, "The victim then went back upstairs grabbed a baseball bat then went out outside to the back yard where he confronted the male suspect striking him with the bat.  The victim and suspect struggled on the ground where the suspect cut the victim with a box style cutter in the back and shoulder."

The suspect ran off through an open fence, headed toward Centerville Square, police said. The sheriff's office K-9 unit and the Maryland State Police aviation unit searched the area but were unable to find the suspect.

Police are seeking a man they say committed first-degree assault and attempted burglary in the incident. No suspect description was provided.

The investigation is being handled by the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

Patch initially reported the incident about an hour after it occurred.

Rich Gardiner, spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire & EMS association, said at that time that one person was transported to a local hospital by the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company. The sheriff's office release said the patient was the male victim, who was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center.

As of 7:15 a.m. on Sunday, deputies remained on the scene after a suspect broke into a residence in an attempted robbery, Lt. Joe VanSeeters of the Harford County Sheriff's Office Northern Precinct told Patch. He said the incident was reported to the sheriff's office at 6:20 a.m.

Anyone with information may call 410-692-7880.

My house up the street was broken into this spring. The PTSD is horrendous. If the family gets any relief from removing the Google image then do it. They deserve any measure of security at this time.

I live in this area as well - not happy to hear this and I hope that the people who were invaded are ok. I can only imagine. My husband makes fun of me for saying I'd never live without a large dog, but this is why! I love this area and it seems so safe & family oriented, but you just never know. I wish the intruder tried our house....he would have been met by a 100 lb. Rottweiler that takes protecting her family very seriously.

This is the reason we moved here... We live on Oakwood, and this neighborhood had a great reputation... That's why we bought our house... We've had a couple if cars broken into in our street, and a bunch of teenage punks are always in the playground, but never thought it could get this serious! Praying for the family effected... Hope he has a speedy recovery!

Agreed - at 3am the other morning I woke up to my Rottweiler barking. I opened the back sliders and saw someone (looked like a teen from what I could see) walking along outside of our privacy fence with a flashlight. From what I could see, he walked behind the next row of townhouses and up into the woods. I figured it was a teenager leaving someone's house and taking a shortcut through the woods to his home like we used to do as teens. Calmed the dog down, locked the sliders and went back to bed not thinking much of it. Now, I think I'll call the police just to be on the safe side. Luckily we have 2 PO's right in our court, so that makes me feel a little bit better. Seems awfully dumb to break into townhouses with tons of other houses very close by, lots of dogs (at least on our court) and from what I've seen, quite a few Harford County sheriffs in this development.

Hopefully it's just a freak incident - we chose to move to this area for the same reasons stated above. It's a great area and I've never felt unsafe, but this does shake the nerves a little. I hope the derelict is caught and thrown in jail for a long time. Grrr.

People, you need to wake up! Your neighborhood as well as Tudor Manor have been having repeated burglaries for the last 12-14 months! Talk to the sheriffs department and they will confirm..You are just being kept in the dark! You are not aware of it but you actually now live in the hood...Welcome to the new Hazzard County. And by the way, those of you whom recently bought in the last 1 1/2 years be sure to thank your realtor because I can assure you they knew about it but did not disclose the crime factor to you.

I'm not doubting what you wrote Hugh, but all in all, I still think this is a nice area and I love it here. The families that live near us are wonderful, the kids play outside like kids are supposed to do and I don't feel unsafe at all. I think burglaries are just about everywhere, not just concentrated in this particular area. I was born and raised in NY and I can promise you that this area is still a wonderful area to live in compared to many other places. Now, I'm not saying things can't turn bad because I sadly watched my old NY neighborhood go from a beautiful, safe "everyone knows everyone" type of neighborhood to one of the most depressing, crime ridden areas within years, but hopefully, we won't allow that to happen here. Like someone else wrote, we need to stick together and if you see something suspicious, report it immediately.

Well I will tell you what our car was broke into the other night by a guy with a flashlight and so was my neighbors a night or two before. A neighbor happen to see the guy getting into our car and called police. They say he was intoxicated but did not tell us he had a flashlight. They also said he came from a party on Glendale. I am sure this is all connected and we as a neighborhood need to watch out for each other and keep an eye out for suspucious people roaming around. If you see any just call the police and report them

I don't know what everyone is talking about regarding how wonderful/beautiful Bel Air is, what a great "reputation" it has, and how "nice" people are here, because its all bullshit, people most certainly are not nice here, ego filled yes, nice? Hardly. Bel Air is filled with "pretend to be rich" snobs, and most of them are racists, which is really pretty funny considering they don't really have the money to back it up and its clear there is NO diversity in the area, doesn't that tell you something?

Just look around town mid-day during the week and you'll see what i mean, heavily overweight mothers out dressed in the sweats they dressed in the night before, or worse, wearing Ravens jerseys. (And that should also tell you something about this area, the quota of Ravens wearing middle aged women is off the charts, it proves there is absolutely nothing good about the area if all you have to hold on to is the Ravens)

Bel Air is Aberdeen once removed, you people who elevate Bel Air to "great" status must have never left the area much less the state. I've traveled around the country and the world, and believe me when i tell you this, Bel Air is one of the worst towns I've ever lived in, and this opinion centers mostly around the people in it, the locals are so mean and cold it could be considered abusive. You people are nuts... maybe there's something in the water....

What a miserable person you must be. I work with a very large amount of NJ transplants because of BRAC , and I can tell you 100%, just about everyone that I have met from NJ is rude, snotty, stuck-up, and just nasty in general. Always making comments about how "nothing around here is nearly as good as how it was in Jersey". Get over yourself. True, many people who think Harford County is the best place to live probably have never been out of the state for more than a week, but you people, who act the way you do "we miss NJ", REALLY should just go back to your beloved stuck-up Jersey. So sorry your family had to move down to MD so you could retain a job. If your so much better than your fellow residents, you wouldn't of had to move to our "bullshit" town. Look in the mirror, and then drink some bleach or something.

We,

I've lived all over the world including New Jersey. Central Jersey to be exact. I was born in Scotland, have lived in Japan, Texas, Florida, and Alaska. And let me tell you, that when I moved to Bel Air, I moved home. This is a true community. Based on what you've written, it appears you're the flawed one. Get off your superior high horse and maybe smile when you leave the house instead of looking down on comfortable mothers or women football fans. Or better yet, take your manicure/pedicured skinnygirl cocktail drinking judgemental self back to yor housewives of new jersey wannabe life style, and leave the enjoyment of living to those of us who can enjoy it here in Bel Air.

Hey Miss NJ - I suggest you go back to where you came from or move to Aberdeen since you think it's "Bel Air once removed". Trust me, we Bel Air "snobs" never wanted you guys to migrate to our town in the first place. So find a job somewhere else please and take YOUR mean, cold and abusive spew with you. (Hate to point out the obvious but you are doing the exact same thing you are accusing others of - what a hypocrite...is that a NJ thang?)
And one more thing GO RAVENS!!!!!

You're pathetic. I'm going to go ahead and assume you're one of the morons I work with at APG, who were "forced" to move to MD to keep their ridiculously high wage:low effort paying jobs. Maybe if you Jersey Strong rubes spent a single weekend in MD, you'd see that it's actually an extremely nice place to live. Instead, your mixture of telework + RDO only means you have to "live" here for 3 days a week before you're zipping back up 95 to your motherland.

I'm in no way a native of Bel Air, Harford, or even MD. I too had to move to MD from another state, because of the BRAC. I didn't want to move, because I didn't want to leave my home either. I did soon find out, though, that this area is a great place to live and raise a family.

The representatives of your beloved state, who now work at APG, are among some of the worst people I've met in my entire life. You people find a way to complain about EVERYTHING in this area. Oh no, there aren't enough bagel shops or "real pizza joints" to satisfy your need to constantly shove them down your craw? Give it a rest.

Also, your comment about the way Bel Air residents look at black and Asian people is completely ridiculous. They're probably just looking at you, in disgust, because they noticed your NJ plates, Jersey Girl stickers, horrible driving, overly loud voice, and general offensiveness to the entire world.

Please go crawl back to where you came from. I hear there is a lot of oceanfront property looking to be bought up.

Dear We-Miss-Nj, It's not that we are snobs or wannabe's, it's just that we dislike ego-filled people moving into our charming town and spreading their lack of morals and bad habits. We also dislike your disobedient children infecting our schools and corrupting the young minds of our precious little ones while they are most impressionable. If you dislike the town as well as the fact that we enjoy supporting our home team then maybe it's time to head back to joyzee. If you want diversity try living in Rockville...Plenty of diversity there. Sounds as though you are a hater and the county has had enough of those infecting our beautiful slice of Americana. One last thing, judging someone based on their age, socio-economic status, or type of clothing they wear only shows the lack of tolerance and diversity in your thought process.

Whatever, you know its true, anyone who has such an egotistical reaction with out reflection proves my point. And you just admitted there was zero diversity here, so what does that tell you? I've witnessed the looks locals give people who are asian or black, its not welcoming at all, as a matter of fact its pretty ugly.

Using examples to prove a point is not rock science Hugh. And the only thing infecting the children here is people like you.... With a little luck maybe they'll be able to escape this place as soon as they're old enough or have enough money, i know we will be....

We moved here from NY 6 years ago - not sure where you're living we-miss-nj, but we haven't had any problems with the locals here at all. As a matter of fact, I've never had such kind neighbors and I love the small town vibe here. I've met tons of people since moving here and have been treated with nothing except kindness & respect. I wouldn't move back to NY or NJ (also lived there for 8 years) if you paid me. I'm sorry you don't like this area. It just begs the question why you moved here, and continue to live here, if you dislike the town and the people so much? I'm not trying to be snarky, just very curious as to why you would choose to live in a place that you so vehemently despise?

We-miss-nj, be the change. I am white and my husband is black. When my house was broken into this spring everyone on my block knocked on my door offering prayers and support. I was born and raised in a town of 40,000 in central Washington state. I have never had neighbor's who cared so much. This young couple has been violated and deserve our support and prayers. Don't use this thread to trash Bel Air. Read the story, accept an imperfect world and do something to make it better.

Sadly enough, I see home invasion stories such as this in the news almost every day. Usually intruders just kick-in the door. In my opinion, the most effective and least expensive thing you can do to protect yourself is to add good door security hardware to your doors to make them as secure as possible. You can get what's called a Door Security Pro ( http://www.DoorSecurityPro.com ) which will stop door kick-ins. It's a long, thick metal plate that reinforces wooden door frames which is what usually breaks when someone kicks in a door.

I'm from NJ and though I missed what my hometown had to offer when we first came, including friends and family, the people of Bel Air have more than made up for what I miss. I find Bel Air a warm and friendly place to live. I don't believe I could have found a better place to settle and share what Bel Air has to offer. Crime is everywhere in good neighborhoods as well as the not-so-good. Be pro-active. There are just too many who believe the possessions you have worked for are theirs for the taking.

Marion - the person definitely seemed a bit off. Dropped his flashlight a few times and stumbled when going up the small hill behind my fence. I should have made a phone call, but honestly figured it was a teenager that had a little too much to drink and was on his way home. I thought he lived in the townhouses directly behind ours until I saw him head into the woods, which I thought was odd, but then thought he probably lived off of Prospect Mill and cut through the woods.

Wow. I grew up in NJ. I loved it. You have to have lived there to understand. Bel Air has been my home for years. It is different, but great. If you see nothing but negative things in anyone or anyplace, take a moment to reflect. The issue is probably within you. Some really ugly comments here... the kind that lead to the disintegration of a community. Judging Bel Air for the amount of money they have versus the amount they are perceived to have is ridiculous. Judging NJ by the emotional reaction of uprooted families unfamiliar with their new community is equally so. Be supportive, not bitter, jealous, and insecure.

Crime has been up in this area... Tudor Manor particularly. We have to be vigilant, use law enforcement but protect ourselves and families as well.

I grew up In NY, loved it and still do!! That doesn't mean that I have to hate Harford County. They are just two different areas. That being said, being from NY does give you a little edge! I was raised to always be on the defensive and never take things for granted. Just because I live in a quiet beautiful county doesn't mean that I should bury my head in he sand. Everybody in very state needs to use common sense and secure your home and belongings at all times! Especially with the jobs and economy being so bad right now, crime will be on the rise big time! People are desperate and will do stupid things and usually target nice areas, where people have nice things and aren't expecting it!
