Boordy Wins 'Best in Show' at Annual MD Wine Competition

Baltimore County based Boordy Vineyards are the proud makers of one of the best wines in Maryland, according to a panel of judges at the 24th annual Governor's Cup Competition.

The winery's 2010 Landmark Reserve took home the coveted "Best in Show" award at the closed-door competition, held at the in Timonium in late August.

The wine is described as a blend of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot—perfect for red wine lovers. 

"We’re really proud of the wine and its performance,”  Rob Deford, the winery's owner, wrote in a release. Deford could not be reached directly, a result of harvest season, where Boordy looks to add to its now 387 cases of award-winning wine.

Boordy, however, was not only beneficiary of the Governor's Cup.

executive director Kevin Atticks has released the list of "Best in class" wines (see below), while also suggesting that consumers too will be winners. 

Judges were kept secret from the 27 wineries who entered the competition until after the awards and prizes were announced, Atticks explained. The judges themselves are the industry's wine buyers and sommeliers that stock local liquor stores with the award-winning wares.

“In addition to finding the best wines in Maryland and promote that, the competition is also a great way to showcase our wines to the people who buy them," Atticks said. "These judges come away tasting 100 new wines that they’ve never tried before.”

The Maryland wine industry has grown to 60 operating wineries, 48 of which are open and running. The remaining 12 are building stock. From 27 wineries entered, 140 different wines were sampled and judged.

"Judges awarded 23 gold, 40 silver and 35 bronze medals to wines throughout the day. Full results can be found on MarylandWine.com," the release states.

"Many of the wines from the Governor’s Cup Competition will be available for tasting and purchase at the 29th Anniversary Maryland Wine Festival on September 15 & 16 at the Carroll County Farm Museum," the release continues.
