An Abingdon man faces multiple traffic and criminal charges after five people, including two children, were injured in a two-car accident Wednesday night on Route 40.

Diedrik Edward Saddler, 30, of the 3400 block of Clairborne Way, was traveling west on Route 40 when a Harford County Sheriff's deputy tried to pull him over. The car, a 1993 Lexus, crashed into the median, hit a sign and flipped onto the eastbound side of the road, striking a 2006 Honda Accord with a family of four inside.

Saddler fled the scene, but was located and arrested within 15 minutes, according to police. He was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center before being taken to the Harford County Detention Center.

Police found “several grams of crack cocaine” near the Lexus, according to a police press statement. Saddler did not own the Lexus, according to a sheriff's office spokeswoman.

Saddler faces multiple charges: possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute; possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than marijuana; failure to return to and remain at the scene of an accident; reckless driving; negligent driving; driving on highway exceeding speed limit (77 mph in a 55 mph zone); attempting to elude a uniformed police officer by failure to stop; attempting to elude uniformed police officer by fleeing.

A 49-year-old woman, 50-year-old man, 12-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy, all from Abingdon, were in the Accord and also transported to Upper Chesapeake. Although both vehicles were totaled, none of the five individuals were considered to have life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
