Fight At Dark Horse Draws Police

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

At least five police vehicles and an ambulance converged on Dark Horse Saloon early Sunday morning, after a fight broke out at the Main Street establishment, according to a Bel Air Police officer at the scene.

The large-scale response came shortly before 2 a.m. when a call came in for a fight involving between 10 and 15 people, the officer told Patch.

It was unclear if anyone was injured during the fight. No further information was available as of post time and the investigation is ongoing.

This is the second violent incident at the bar within a week. Two people were stabbed during a violent incident outside Dark Horse on Dec. 1.

I see a DarkHorse ad under my comment. Funny. Anyway, I was there. A girl walked by me and yelled at a guy who is she, who is she. Two girls started fighting during Thank God I am a country boy. Police were called. They have been there 4 years and no incidents. I go all the time. I heard no ghetto music tonight. Girls want to have fun, Red Solo Cup, Devil went down to georgia, Katy Perry. I don't get it. It is a great place and I am now friends with many servers and a couple bartenders.

Ron, just to let you know, "ghetto music" is the music played in the ghetto. Do you understand it now?

Hey Damon, you seem to be showing your bias against white people. Most people know that "ghetto music implies "Rap" or "Soul" music. See....it's not hard to figure out. Enjoy!

I think Damon's point is to go back to all the comments from last weeks story who blamed it on the "ghetto music" or supposed customer base it invites and to show that this is not a race/culture issue that this is going to happen white, black, red, yellow, purple, green, especially when a bar is set up in a manner that encourages belligerence then does very little to actively supervise it or take their share of responsibility for it.

Anytime. You have people drinking your going to have instant assholes. If you monitor the place better like the old old hammerjacks and toss the torrents it will cut down on it. But your gonna have some its part of that type of atmosphere.

Instead of turning this issue into a race war on here, let's stick to the point. There needs to be a better police presence here, and maybe the bartenders need to learn to cut people off after too much. Or, better yet, not allow the customers to get ridiculously drunk enough to cause problems. I tended bar for 5 years, and never allowed my customers, even my regulars, to get falling down, fighting drunk. I would have rather not gotten tipped than watch the drama alcohol can cause. People also need to learn their limits. If you cannot handle your alcohol, don't drink. There are many who shouldn't drink at all, yet they continue to do so, and cause problems for others who just want to go out, have a few, dance and have fun. Maybe if they start banning the troublemakers, there won't be so many problems.

Jill,

My tax paying dollars should not go to police breaking up fights for a bunch of drunks. The Dark Horse, while it is a very good establishment, needs to have better control of its customers. The people working their probably know who the trouble makers are and they should be escorted out as soon as they arrive there, not let them stay til trouble starts. But no way should the taxpaying citizens of Harford County be responsible for Police presence at a bar.

Mary,

I think if the Officers of Harford County, both Sheriff and Municipality, took a week off, you would see that they don't just hang out at 7-11. You would see out of control crime. Your expertise is obviously not in law enforcement and nor should you be speaking about law enforcement agency's that you have no clue how important they are to our community. Just a very uneducated response.

Would you describe these bad actors as progressive or liberal? Also, is it allowable to use one's "Independence" card to pay a bar tab? I see it used to pay for chips, soda pop and all sorts of other nutritional items at the convenience store. I'm interested because I'm an unwilling sponsor of these things.

Lance is correct, Darkhorse should have better security, like Looneys and Magerks has. Why should taxpayers foot the bill when Darkhorse is happily making money from these out of control patrons? Pay for bouncers Darkhorse...maybe a cover will help offset the cost. Or better yet, lose your liquor license.

The bouncers aren't allowed, per BA police, to do anything in the parking lot. They also cannot keep people against their will inside. With that being said, I believe this happened at closing time, in the parking lot. From my experience with Dark Horse there are always at least 3 police cars present in the parking lot at this time ...

The lot is owned by the county. People can't find parking at Looneys Mcgerks and other bars downtown and park in front of DH. That's why so many fight happen there. Most are not even ppl drinking at DH, but all the publicity goes to the DH.

They switched names before because of too many fights putting their license in jeopardy. Seems like the same element is putting it in jeopardy again.

Your bitterness in light of the fact that you supported a losing candidate in the last election and continue to follow an untenable political agenda aside, why don't you just read what the man writes and pipe down? At least he is detailed and coherent.

Looking over your posts, it seems that you can barely write a paragraph and certainly not one without slurs or sexual innuendo.

Karl Schuub

Not sure I want it shut down but they certainly have some splainin' to do. This bar needs to submit a plan to the liquor board suggesting the changes they will make to minimize the issues there. They also need to train the bartenders and wait staff how to recognize when someone needs to be cut off from being served. I would suggest they simply announce last call long before 2...it might help mitigate everyone pounding thier last few drinks and everyone spilling into the street right at 2. A much earlier last call is a simple fix to a mass exodus, but then again they'd lose a bit of money and they apparently are in it for the money with little if any concern for public order.

Karl, I respect your opinion, but you are way off. How do YOU know these people were "cut off" drunk? That's right, you don't. Get over yourself. The security staff is trained just fine. They do not and cannot do anything in the parking lot. That control in the parking lot is up to the police that patrol that said area of Bel Air. Stop being so quick to judge everything and anything.

Sarah - I understand why the owners, staff and loyal patrons want to sing that song, but if the folks involved in these melees were drinking at DH then the bar has some culpability for injuries and fights. The first thing the folks that run that place need to do is recognize they have a problem - the solution starts with that. If the only thing we hear is a repeated parroting of "not our fault - it's the parking lot" then we'd just as soon shut down the place because it's an indication that the management intends to do nada to fix it and foist the problems and costs unto the taxpayers.

You always have something negative to say. You have no idea what the staff/management are doing to fix the issues that have taken place these last 2 weeks. So you mean to tell me once someone leaves that establishment anything that happens from that point until they arrive home is Dark Horse's fault? That's BS. The drinking age is 21 years old. I would hope to God that by the time you are 21 years old you are able to be held accountable for your actions in public. If you want to drink and act like a fool that's YOUR fault, not the places where you drink. How are the bartenders supposed to know how much someone can handle or how they are going to act once they get a certain amount of alcohol in their system? If they aren't falling all over the place then well they don't know. Also, you are always preaching about taxpayers and how they are footing the bill. Guess what? You'll be footing the bill for stupid crap for as long as you pay taxes. Get over it.

Spoken like a person who hasn't paid taxes very long. Wouldn't you like your taxes to pay for constructive things; rather than destructive things? If the police can't hire another officer because of budget shortfalls due to overtime costs because of DH then it has a negative effect on the community. That officer might have saved a life; arrested a burglar, arrived at an accident scene in time to administer first aid...any number of positive things that we'll forego so that DH can get people really, really drunk.

If it isn't Dark Horse it will be Mcgercks....it isn't the establishment. Everyone in bel air knows if you want the young wasted dance party go to dark horse. When they shut it down it will switch to mcgercks or another "no-cover" bar. The police should be on foot outside of these bars near last call. I think more security could help or more active security but i don't blame them. Idiots are going to be idiots no matter what you do.

Dave Sample

Alot of you guys are off base. The police is there to protect the citizens. If that mean they have to go to the bar when it closes, that is what they do. Police will go where there is a more liklieness of crime. So while we don't want people to act like fools they will and the police will be there to take them to jail. If your child is the one on the ground being kicked, you will want the police there as soon as possible. As a parent we teach our kids to avoid these type of places or situations but sometime trouble find us even when we think we are OK.

And it is the duty of the bartender to decide if someone is too drunk. You do not have to be falling down. They take classes given by the liquor board on alcohol awareness. I was a bouncer for a few years and had to take a course on alcohol. Had to see other stuff like sleepyness, slurr speech, stares and other stuff.

Black or white, some people are just fools. If the bar continues to attract these fools and does not look to control the happenings, then the bar might need to be shut down.

I moved out of the Baltimore city because where I was just walking outside to the store was dangerous but so I moved to Bel Air. All people are nice to me up here even the Harbillies someone said. See them as people who are OK and are OK with me. I don't go to the bars where these troubles are. Only had issue once with someone my own color and it was because this person was a fool.

As my favorite TV personality says "Nothing good comes from over indulging with alcoholic beverages, nothing". I believe onesself is responsible for onesself and if you are too irresponsible to do so you deserve what ever comes your way, police, bouncers, bar owners, bar management cannot and will not change that.

I was there and this is what happend.... this black guy got smart with this white guy for asking him to move from his table when he came off the dance floor with his friends the black guy said to the white guys walk out side cracker ... So the white guy started walking away then the black guy ran up on him and hit him in the back of his head then some girls jumped on the white guy and then some other girls jumped on those girls then it spilled into the parking lot and it looked to me like all these people where fighting only 3 or 4 other people.... From what I saw there was 3 or 4 people that were fighting 1 or 2 people a piece. I saw the white guy and his friends try to leave when this black guy and his friend jumped him again from the back then the white guy only had 2 girls and some other guy helping him fight off this crowd..... The Girl that got Kicked in the face even though sad was not on the bottom she was on top of 1 girl along with 2 other girls..... From the crowd outside fighting i was not even sure they were all old enough to be in a bar!!!!!!!!!!!! If you want better security it should start with proper technology to ensure you are not letting in minors... Like Id scanner!!!!!! Small price to pay to keep the establishment open and enjoyable for ADULTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can say this: I have been at the Darkhorse several times over the past few years. Every time, an altercation broke out. Either some white, wanna-be thug, or some hood rat from southern harf co was involved. I am not be racist here, but it's the truth. I would say to start patting down thugs that look the part. Call it discrimination, or whatever you feel like. If grown men wanna walk in to a bar in the county with their ass cheeks showing through their boxers, they are inviting the stereotypes anyway. They are just looking for trouble with that "What you lookin' at" bullshit. If you thug punks don't like it, then take your badass selves and start some trouble somewhere else, like downtown for starters. See how long you all last doing that!
