Forest Hill Accident Claims One Life

Police say the deceased was likely responsible for the crash.

A Friday morning crash claimed the life of a Bel Air woman.

Around 10:30 a.m. Margaret Mary Campbell, 79, was driving a 2005 Ford Focus southbound on Grafton Shop Road in Forest Hill, according to a news release from Maryland State Police.

At the intersection of Grafton Shop and state Route 23, Campbell allegedly failed to yield the right of way to a westbound 2005 Ford pickup truck, the release states.

The Focus broadsided the pickup that was driven by David John Jockel, 57, of Fallston, it states.

Campbell was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment where she later died as a result of her injuries.

Did the truck broadside the Focus or vice versa?

So sad, thoughts are with the family of Ms. Campbell.
I hate that intersection and try to avoid it at all costs!

I'm a firm believer in testing the elderly yearly to keep their license...............

Drivers licenses should be harder to obtain and keep, period. Inattention, impatience, or just plain poor judgement are risk factors for young and old alike. Seeing the aftermath of an accident like this up-close and personal, as I did, is a great reminder of the need to just slow down and pay attention a little more when on the road.

It was a van (Ford E-series) westbound on 23, which broadsided the Focus. There was likely nothing the van driver could have done to avoid the crash.

Just speculating on cause, but one of the things that makes this a tricky intersection is that if you're southbound and looking east your view of westbound "through" traffic can easily be obscured by a larger vehicle turning right. So if you judge wrong and pull out you're likely going to get creamed by someone proceeding westbound at full speed (it's a 55mph speed limit on 23). And because of the skew of the intersection the view to your right (west) can be obscured by your own C-pillars.

For a driver entering the intersection from Grafton Shop Road, the only safe way to negotiate this intersection is to stop, look, wait, and look again.
