As the last notes of "Silent Night" drifted through the cold night air, several people wiped away tears as they clung to lit candles.

This was the somber scene of the candlelight vigil held Wednesday evening at Shamrock Park in Bel Air in memory of the 26 people who lost their lives in a Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

"We stand together tonight and on the precipice of winter's cold to say with our hearts and our souls, our candles and our prayers, that we care, that we notice, that we cannot do nothing," Pastor Allan Gorman of Harford Community Church said in his message. "We must stand for the hurting and the healing and the hope."

Gorman said the vigil was to let the people of Newtown know that Bel Air, Harford County and the state of Maryland as a whole is hurting with them.

The vigil was co-sponsored by Joy McDowell of Aberdeen and the Bel Air Police Department.
