Harford County Classroom Helper Charged With Sex Abuse
Amanda Miller is an inclusion helper at North Harford High School in Pylesville.
OUTSIDE BALTIMORE, MD -- UPDATE: (11:30 a.m.)—A classroom helper who works with disabled students at a local high school was charged Monday with sex abuse after allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old boy.
Amanda K. Miller, 35, of the 4500 block of Flintville Road in Whiteford, is charged with sex abuse of a minor, third-degree sex offense and two counts of fourth-degree sex offense, according to a news release from the Harford County Sheriff's Office.
Miller was working as an inclusion helper at North Harford High School, a position that is part of the school system's special education team and serving students with disabilities in the Harford County Public School system, the school system's website states.
The 15-year-old boy told detectives with the Harford County Child Advocacy Center, a unit that specializes in investigating mistreatment of children, that he and Miller had sex, the release states. He went on to say that he and Miller have been communicating outside of school since December, she occasionally took him home from school and had bought him cigarettes, according to police.
The boy does not have special needs and the two met when he was helping in the same classroom as Miller, according to Edward Hopkins, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.
Miller was taken into custody at North Harford High School Monday. She was released from the Harford County Detention Center that same day after posting $50,000 bail, according to police.
Miller started as an inclusion helper with the school system on Jan. 30, 2012, according to Teri Kranefeld, manager of communications with the school system. Miller has been placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation, Kranefeld wrote in an email to Patch.
"As this is an open police investigation and a personnel matter, we are prohibited from releasing any information with respect to this case," Kranefeld wrote.
Stay with Patch for updates.

Hello "Lady",
Why should PRINCIPAL Herbold call to inform NHHS parents before all of the information is gathered? If this is an on-going investigation (WHICH IT IS), could it be possible that he may need PERMISSION from the POWERS THAT BE before calling parents? DID YOU EVER THINK OF THAT? When the information is properly received, I'm sure it will be distributed accordingly.

I agree --- but they DONT notify us when things happen that concern the safety and well being of our kids; they notify us of nonsense stuff. Or they deny everything until there are HCSO cars swarming the place and then they cant deny it any further! Ridiculous that we find this out on FB, or our kids know about it before us.

It seems it was consensual, but still the boy being under age doesn't make it consensual by law. What a mess. Unfortunately, now that the incident is out......we found out that most of the kids knew about it. Classmates were high five-ing the 15 yr. old, saying "your the man". Now, what does that tell you about the boy? Parenting is going by the wayside. Wake up parents, input some spiritual time, in between all the sports activities. They need to find a way to deal with the victims "stupidity" in this case, along with the criminals guilt.

If she has posted bail, that means she has been arrested and processed and therefore is in the Maryland Judiciary System, which is public record. I see nothing wrong with publishing the name. James P. Miller, it seemed appropriate to break the story county wide given that this is a county school system employee and county taxes go toward funding her salary. As for names, Havre de Grace Patch is currently not publishing the names of individuals in the police blotter unless staff intends to follow the case to its conclusion. This story falls under the second category. Patch will follow this case closely and to its conclusion.

Kirsten wrapped it up well in her comment above. The name of an individual charged with a crime is public record. There are some cases where a name is not published. The reasons vary. I'll write an explanation later today as to our policy on naming names in crime reports—which we've updated in recent months.

Shelley there is no such thing as innocent till proven guilty otherwise you wouldn't have to prove anything in court. They should have to prove you are guilty. Courts automatically side with their own side. Officers say one thing you say something different and you are automatically wrong. In Maryland woman have more say than a man. A woman can lie right through her teeth and the courts will believe her over a man in a New York second.

Not a bad idea. Why to publish any names before conviction? Your are right, in this case the husband and children are going to suffer much EVEN if the outcome is that she was and is innocent of these charges. It could impact their lives for ever and or the husband could be so distraught that commits suicide before finding out this was a false charge. It would not be the first time.

Then later nobody cares to report or read that you were found innocent.

Someone here mentioned consensual. In Maryland dont you have to be 16 to consent? Who are we to say she is guilty or not. Protect our children to avoid the risk should she be guilty, and if she isnt than those pretending to be Judge on here saying she isnt because they were there watching them two, are the winners.

To "Thetruth", whether its this accused woman or any other person who volunteers in the elementary school and works at the high school as she does, if MY kids were exposed to her, or overseen by her in a classroom setting, you better believe that it is most definitely MY business. Consensual or not, this is NOT normal behavior for a woman her age OR a young boy his age, so there IS certainly reason for concern for all those that may or may not be under her guidance/care.

The question is if it actually happened. There is no such thing as "consensual" sex between a 35 year old and a 15 year old in the state of MD because the 15 year old is too young to legally consent. That's what age of consent laws are for.

HCPS central office dictates when and how administrators release information. If Herbold was told to wait then he has to. People seem to forget there is a chain of command and a principal is NOT at the top in situations like this.
Yes, people are innocent until proven guilty but when children are involved it becomes a matter of keeping others safe. If she is guilty shame on her, if she is not that kid will owe her a public apology.

None of us should judge, or take sides in this situation. Unless, you are the teacher or the victim you don't know what truly happened, thus we should keep our opinions on who is guilty to ourselves. She will be judged soon enough, by a jury of her peers. I personally know Amanda and am disheartened by the whole situation, only because how many people this effects. The Amanda I know is a sweet, kind woman who is very involved with her three small children. I think all parties involved, need our prayers at this time, not our opinions on whether this happened or not.

Perhaps, and just perhaps, this sort of almost daily news would be of much less frequency if our children would have stronger morals being taught at home. Let alone the incessant promotion and glamorizing of sex and violence in the movies, TV, magazines, and video games. What do we think when we hear James Bond! Cool guy, he gets girl after girl, and kills often times with pleasure. How about 2-1/2 men? So called score after score of one night stands, innuendos of oral sex and group sex. No, NO, I do not watch any, but I am informed of the garbage.
