Friends, family and colleagues bid a somber, and at times tearful, goodbye to Cpl. Charles Licato Wednesday.

The 14-year Harford County Sheriff's Office veteran died in a single-car crash on U.S. Route 1 in Darlington early Thursday morning as he was heading home from a shift.

Licato's marks the third line of duty death in the sheriff's office's 238-year history.

More than 200 sheriff's deputies and 600 members of neighboring police forces attended the funeral at Mountain Christian Church in Joppa on Wednesday.

Harford County Sheriff L. Jesse Bane said everyone who knew him had a "Charlie story."

Bane said Licato was one of the first to ask him to go on a ride along when he first took office and the younger man always had ideas about ways to improve the sheriff's office.

Bane said when deputies arrived at the scene of the early morning crash that claimed Licato's life, they insisted on carrying their colleague to the medical examiner's van and escorting his body to the medical examiner's office.

"If Charles could have been there to witness this he would have been proud too," Bane said, "At the time, however, I am certain he was probably preoccupied, holding his first meeting no less with God himself, telling him about this idea he had to make the Lord's operations run more smoothly."
