The first season of a political thriller series is set to be produced in Harford County, according to a release from the county executive's office.

The 13-episode series entitled "House of Cards" is considered Netflix's first original drama. Media Rights Capital and Netflix agreed to base production out of Harford County, the release stated.

The Maryland Film Office announced that the miniseries would be filmed in Maryland last week.

“We are extremely pleased that filmmakers of this caliber have chosen Maryland as the location for this series,” said Governor O’Malley in a separate press release. “The production is estimated to have a $75 million economic impact and is projected to create over 2,000 jobs for local crew, actors and extras and support hundreds of Maryland businesses.”

Oscar winner Kevin Spacey will produce and star in the series, while other Hollywood names have agreed to join the production team as well.

"The project is expected to have a major impact on the local economy, with service industries such as catering and lodging, as well as construction, standing to feel the benefits," the release states.

“This represents a tremendous opportunity for Harford County and will provide a noticeable boost to our economy,” County Executive David Craig said in the release. “Between the number of jobs created, office and studio space leased, hotel rooms booked, and businesses utilized, this is yet another indication that industries of all types recognize that Harford County is a good place to do business.”

Along with Kevin Spacey, the show's team includes award winning director David Fincher, director of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network and Fight Club and Eric Roth writer of Forrest Gump.

I believe this will be a great happening for Harford County. We look forward to seeing all the activity to go with this event. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of many movies to be made in Harford County, which will help our economy greatly. Not only the county economy will benefit but so will those that are choosen to participate in the productions.
