A large tree fell across Idlewild Road in Bel Air.

Heavy winds are dropping trees and power lines throughout Harford County as Hurricane Irene approached Maryland late Saturday night.

At least five roads were closed just before midnight, with more damage expected by 2 a.m.

A tree branch about 2 feet in diameter came crashing down on Idlewild Road in downtown Bel Air in the above video. Three town Department of Public Works employees cleared the road with chainsaws around 11 p.m.

Rich Gardiner, spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association, said there have been calls for about a half-dozen trees on houses across the county. At least one family was displaced and took shelter at Patterson Mill High School.

The branch in the video closed Idlewild Road for a little more than an hour, but did not cause any damage.

The Department of Public Works did an excellent job in Bel Air. A large portion of a tree fell on Hemingway Dr. in Bel Air blocking the street. Within minutes of calling the town police the DPW was there clearing the downed tree and opening the road. Thanks for your hard work DPW workers.

it would be nice if the opened the Tollgate location this week for the dropping off of tree debris instead of having to drive all the way up to Scarboro or waiting until next Saturday.
