Joe's Crab Shack to Join Wegmans, PNC Bank, in Boulevard at Box Hill

The Wegmans opening date has been moved to Sept. 18.

Seafood lovers rejoice.

Joe’s Crab Shack will be the first restaurant to join Wegmans in the Boulevard at Box Hill.

Joe's is scheduled to open Oct. 1, less than two weeks after the grocery superstore’s opening on Sept. 18 (three days later than its original start date).

PNC Bank, which is scheduled to begin construction in the next four to six weeks, will open on or near the same day as Wegmans.

The two Joe’s Crab Shack locations closest to Bel Air are in Gaithersburg, outside Washington, DC, and Wilmington.

“We’re real excited to be selected to be the first one here in the Baltimore area,” said Tom Fidler, senior vice president and principal of MacKenzie Commerical Real Estate Services, the Boulevard's consulting and leasing agent.

The menu for Joe’s includes shrimp, mussels, oysters, and of course, crabs. The restaurant also serves burgers, desserts and alcoholic beverages.

Joe’s opened its first location in Texas in 1991 and now has 114 eateries nationwide. The Gourmet Dining corporation owns the restaurant.

Fidler said another restaurant is close to signing an agreement, which will complete Phase 1 of the master plan.

“We are still in concept planning for Phase 2 as part of the overall master plan,” he said. “Those plans will be forthcoming for community review in the coming weeks or months.”

Just what Bel Air needs. Another Restaraunt and not even locally owned.

The Boulevard is not in Belair it is in Abingdon. I am glad to see more restaurants opening up in Abingdon. Joe's Crab Shack is a great family seafood place. If you don't like it and don't have anything nice to say then shut up and don't go there.

Mass market garbage. We need a Wet Willy's north, not another chain restaurant.

For those of us who are not familiar with this restaurant, please expand on your comment. What do you hate?

If you hate Joe's, don't go there, I am a seafood lover and have been to the Joe's in Wilmington, Delaware several times. The atmosphere is great and the steam pots are fantastic. If you like seafood and have never eaten at Joe's, give it a try, otherwise this is America, you can go to any restaurant you want !

As the Marketing and Leasing Consultant for this project, please feel to forward any recommendations on any restaurant, retailer, or speciality shop that you would like to see. I will be happy to follow up in the event we have not already contacted any of your suggestions.

You may be interested in knowing that this project has been in the works for nearly 6 years. The developer, Ward Properties, has been committed to developing a highly successful, open air retail environment that the County residents can take pride in having. As you can imagine, the change in the market over the past two years has caused our prospect list to change multiple times. I believe we are on our 14 edition of the master concept site plan. The focus of the project has always been to attract new retail uses and brands, and not simply be a relocation option for those retailers in the market today. We currently have a great target list of interested retailers, many national restaurants, and several very successful local restaurant and fashion operators. If the early indication of interest is a sign of the potentail merchant list, we will have a project in our community that deliver on its vision - a place to shop, eat, and experience.

I'm with Melissa....Carrabba's is great! I'd also like to see Noodles & Co. and California Pizza Kitchen. Pretty much just duplicate the Hunt Valley Town Center and we'll be set. :)

Yes, let's continue to support large conglomerate corporations that shift their dollars out of Harford County rather than supporting locally owned establishments serving better food, supporting the community and keeping their dollars local. Keep on #winning.

This is a late response but I suppose the local workers that the chain employs, from the franchisee, manager(s), cooks, dishwashers, servers, bartenders, host/hostesses, maintenence and cleaning crew, to the construction company who built the place are all negatively affected by having the opportunity for jobs? How about the increase in tax/licensing revenue for the county? Most of these successful chains stay in business longer than many of the local companies who came and went.

A Trader Joe's would be great, but I fear it would be too close for the anchor's (Wegamn's) comfort.

Maggianos or Carrabas would be nice. Im very excited about this new development in Harford County. Can't say that I'm excited about Joe's Crab Shack as I've never tried their food. But my family will likely give it a try. For those of you wanting local restaurants, howabout posting some suggestions ... you never know who's reading. Actually it is a question? Are we getting a Home Goods store? I originally heard we were and I was really looking forward to it. Please let me know . Thanks.

A great seafood restaurant would be great. I can't find a really good seafood restuarant anywhere near Bel Air.

I also heard that DSW shoes is going next to Home Goods! A Noodles and Co. would be a great store for abingdon too, as well as a JC Penney. Can't wait for Wegman's and Joe's. Way to go Harford co. It's about time we need to compete more with White Marsh and Columbia. Keep our Money up here in Harford Co.

Well the restarants that are local aren't always the answer either, look at The New Mallet Restaraunt:

Upon arrival there are no clues to what the upper and lower level dining areas are about, you have to wander to figure it out. Crabs are advertised as you enter the lower level bar area but you can't eat them there, even our waitress did not know that, someone else had to tell her. A couple outside eating had told us prior that the place was crazy and no one seemed to know what was going on. So after being moved from the bar to the unknown raw bar area we ordered crab dip and a dozen large crabs. The crab dip was runny and tasted like clam chowder, the bread was small and over toasted. When our waitress asked how the dip was we informed her and she said she that she thought it was great, we told her that you couldn't even taste crab and she said this was the new italian chefs version (if it ain't broke why fix it, go to Silver Spring Inn for the real thing). So then the medium crabs arrived, we were still charged for large, they were short on spices, has a hint of vinegar and old bay. Maryland crabs should be steamed with salt, dry mustard, old bay, vinegar and beer. Would appear that this is the new italain chefs version. The pricing is too high for what is given in return. So a return trip is unlikely, be warned!

Unreal so much love is given to large nationwide mega stores and restaurants. Think regional. Iron Hill is regional and so it Duclaw to a degree. Why not create opportunities to get great local places a chance at the Boulevard? Instead of Carrabba's, how about a second larger and improved Basta Pasta or Sapore Di mare? Put a Plato's closet in there, or something. New town centers need to first be filled with regional and local places. Where there is gap left over, fill with it national chains. Actually Wegman's started it off nicely...

There are already nine Iron Hill brewery locations - ho many does it take to become a chain or "mega store"?

And Duclaw is regional " to a degree"? From their blog: "DuClaw Brewing Company opened it’s first brewery in 1996 in Bel Air, Maryland. Countless flavors, styles and brewing awards later, brewing operations moved to an expanded facility in Abingdon, Maryland..." Is that regional enough for you?
