Biden-Ryan Vice Presidential Debate: Who Won?

What does Maryland think?

Update, 10:50 p.m.: Vice President Joe Biden's use of "malarkey" or his famous smirk (@BidenSmirk) may have taken some of the attention during Thursday night's vice presidential debate, but many called the showdown between Biden and Rep. Paul Ryan a substantive exchange on policy.

Several news outlets called Biden's performance "dominant" in what was a highly anticipated face-off between two experienced Washington politicians out to defend their running mates' policies.

Some of the credit for the effective give and take went to moderator Martha Raddatz, an ABC News correspondent who asked tough questions and attempted to stick to time limits. Raddatz asked the candidates about their stances on the economy, unemployment, healthcare and even their personal views on abortion.

Patch's Cover It Live feed (above) was full of commentary from Maryland politicians and debate watchers. You can review the commentary by clicking the "play" button above.

Did Biden's performance Thursday night help President Obama's campaign? Obama praised his running mate immediately following the nationally televised encounter.

Did Ryan answer the questions about Romney's plan for America adequately?

Who won?

Tell us in the comments.

Original Post, 10 a.m.: Election watchers are anxiously awaiting a showdown between two political attack dogs tonight in the only vice presidential debate of the 2012 campaign.

That's been one of the traditional roles of the vice presidential candidates in a campaign, and this year is seen as no different. With the lower volume face-off in 2008 between Biden and Sarah Palin, it's been awhile.

Pundits are calling tonight's debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Rep. Paul Ryan a potential pivotal moment in what has become a tight race between President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney--maybe not a game changer, but a momentum-booster as America enters the last weeks before the Nov. 6 election.

The public has seen Biden in such a venue and he brings decades of national political leadership to the podium. Ryan has never performed in just such a scenario but is known for his congressional expertise on the issues, particularly Medicare.

A Pew poll released Wednesday showed that 40 percent of registered voters said they thought Ryan would prevail and 34 percent said Biden would come out ahead.

Tell us if you think the VP debate is important to this election and take our poll on who you think will win.

The debate is from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Centre College in Kentucky.

Join the discussion here and on Twitter starting at 8 p.m. Follow your local Patch and tweet hashtag #MDDebate and #PatchPolitics to get your comments live into the feed.

@ Not easily impressed Biden acted disgraceful, period. It was the most absurd display of liberal bufoonery I think I've ever had the unpleasant responsibility of having to witness. His dramatics were not only immature but telling as well. His snorting guffaws and derisive laughter, histrionics and arrogance were the most blatant examples of a liar. He reminded me of a 10 year old. Ryan not only kept his composure, but he even respectfully told Biden he felt honored to be there debating with him... clearly a far better man.

Joe Biden is the best example of "anyone can make it in America". Had this been a high school debate the moderator would have stopped the proceedings and reprimanded the participant for inappropriate behavior ... well not with ole Joe ... God help the USA, we have reached a new low in responsible behavior by elected officials.

Biden's problems continued when C-SPAN footage surfaced two weeks later showing Biden inflating his academic record at law school. Bumbling Joe Biden - the harmless nitwit? Well, not completely:

In law school in the’60s, where he graduated near the bottom of his class, Biden indeed plagiarized a law review article for a class paper. In the ’80s, he stole other politicians’ work for political speeches. When he was caught, he played dumb about the mechanics of citation—classic plagiarist move.

You want lies Steve, look no further than Stephanie Cutter. She has been caught in REAL LIES not simple changes of position you keep whining about.

Now she is blaming R&R for the Benghazi terrorist attack hearings and news articles.

"Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said Thursday that the “entire reason” the terrorist attack at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi that killed four Americans has “become the political topic it is” is because Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan talk about the attack.

STEPHANIE CUTTER: In terms of the politicization of this — you know, we are here at a debate, and I hope we get to talk about the debate — but the entire reason this has become the political topic it is, is because of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. It’s a big part of their stump speech. And it’s reckless and irresponsible what they’re doing.

BROOKE BALDWIN: But, Stephanie, this is national security. As we witnessed this revolution last year, we covered it–

CUTTER: It is absolutely national security–

BALDWIN: –it is absolutely pertinent. People in the American public absolutely have a right to get answers.

Cutter’s remarks drew immediate criticism from across the political spectrum. But the Obama spox quickly doubled down on Twitter, replying to a Buzzfeed researcher, “Romney has politicized Libya w/no plans of his own. POTUS’ priorities are getting facts & bringing terrorists to justice.”"

Lying bit%h!

I love the left's code words: "reproductive rights". Logic and the dictionary would lead you to believe they mean the GOP wants to prevent women from reproducing. But what is really meant is their ability to not reproduce. Anita, there are several other ways to prevent reproduction. In fact, wasn't it Biden that said he thought China's forced abortion laws were reasonable? Now, that's truly taking away "reproductive rights"!
Why do the Dems constantly have to rename their unpopular beliefs? Why can't you just call it abortion? Or murder? Or, "women's right to kill their own babies"? Renaming it every few years won't change what it is.

Yes, Ann, there ARE other ways to prevent reproduction. But Republicans want to limit those as well. These are intensely personal decisions, and should be between a woman and her doctor. Period.

Or the baby's rights? But the point is - stop trying to rename it to make it sound better - it's abortion. If you're so concerned about "reproductive rights", get upset with Biden's stance on China's FORCED abortion laws. You have no credibility.

It's one thing to have an opinion many people have had opinions like Walter Kronkite, Anderson Cooper, and Shepard Smith. But funding an anti-government protest is unprecedented in the news industry.

What did you think of all that smirking and interrupting? Was it rude?

Interesting that the camera's were on him most of the time never missing his actions and reactions to anything Mr. Ryan said. Biden, who is not a dummy, ended up looking like a dork!!! After a while with all the postering one could hardly concentrate on his answers...a big plus for Ryan.

@ Evelyn Gonzalez How crude... "Nothing but sperm in his daddy's pants" ...? And is English your secondary language?? Biden is a leftist, socialist who is merely "on board" with Obama a.k.a. Barry Soetoro, because of the global elite, like George Soros, et al, who own the media and Obama for that matter, and feed sheeple like you what they want you in your own limited knowledge and interests to believe. I'm pretty sure your main interests lie in the latest iphone or who's who in celebrity news. Obama "inherited" 1 trillion in debt... but he had no problem spiking it up another 15 trillion as he and his America-hating wife jetted around on vacations paid for by the American taxpayers. I honestly cannot understand what is wrong with this country of democrats! I am a patriot and I loath this president who defiles the office he has been handed, apologising to other countries for our "arrogance"?? We, the United States, who have come to the aid of so many in history. And ignoring the veterans of this country who bravely fought to help keep this country free and put him in the office he now occupies. It sickens me. But what can one expect from a man who thinks the U.S. consists of 57 states

Bringing up history in a national debate is never a good idea, but Obama DID try to reach across the aisle in the beginning of his term. Mitch McConnell, on the other hand, marshalled his troops to "make Obama a 1-term president."

So how well do you think the 1-term Governor of MA, who couldn't get re-elected and will not win this election in either of his home states, along with his highly-partisan running mate do if he gets the chance?

Like it or not (and I personally do not), politics has become highly partisan in this country. You can drink the Kool-Aid if you like.

You can't work with a leader who is barrelling towards a cliff. If Obama wins reelection, his second term will be even more radical than his first - by his own words. Remember: "I'll be able to be more flexible after the election" - to Russia's Medvedev? If any bipartisanship is desirable or possible, it will be because the Dems in DC are relieved when Obama gets kicked out of office. Their arms are so twisted, it will take a corkscrew to straighten them out.

These debates are as much about intelligence and fitness to serve in office as this forum.
Both media are devoid of the things that people need to hear and think about.
Both media support emotional binge-and-purge.
Both media are seductive and manipulative.

Cranks and outbursts rule in these settings. Image replaces substance. Combat is the ruling metaphor. It's mano a mano.

And everybody has an opinion and it is the opinion that matters, not the claim, not the warrants, not the evidence. The structure of argumentation gets the participant nothing. No points. No respect.

Biden once again proved himself to be a class(less) clown who lacks the dignity and self-restraint to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency--by far the worst VP we've had, in the past 100 years. The oh-so-biased "moderator" turned in a performance that was even worse than Jim Lehrer's--a feat I hadn't thought possible until last night. I watched only for the entertainment value--but there wasn't any. Fifteen or twenty minutes of that smirking, grimacing adolescent trying desperately to be the center of attention was about all I could stand. And his discourtesy to Ryan was made worse by the fact that he's the supposedly "seasoned" debater, going up against a young man who's had no experience. I hope Ryan is smart enough not to take a cue from the "master"--unless it's what *not* to do, in a debate,

John T, you said that no one is going to change his or her mind about whom to vote for in the Presidential election based upon last night's debate. I can tell you for a fact that Sarah Palin cost Sen. McCain the last election--because even people who liked and respected him just couldn't take the risk (given his age and infirmities) that she might take his place. Deborah, I think the comments demonstrate that Ryan won--if only by default. I don't think his performance was strong (and didn't expect it to be, given his inexperience)--but when the supposedly experienced party in a debate violates all of the rules of common courtesy, form, and protocol (and is allowed to do so by a "moderator" who shouldn't be allowed to referee fights in a nursery school), and his opponent does his best to maintain his cool and carry himself with dignity, the latter shines by comparison.

This time around, Obama has a record to run on and it's not pretty, and that alone will make it difficult for him to win re-electionand because there are not enough Maryland's to get him over the top. The moderator (Obama was at her wedding because he is close to her husband) interrupted Ryan 34 times. Ryan interrupted Biden 6 times. The moderator did not interrupt Biden. When the truth is your enemy you can not let it be heard. The list of Biden's lies is almost too staggering to bother repeating. Biden also voted for both wars and thei total cost has still not equalled Obama's first stimulus bill.

When he did meet him he had him enter the White House through the service entrance (a deliberate insult), he refused to allow a photo of them together, and he refused to have dinner with him. He also repeated the lie that their coverup of the Libya attack was based on faulty intelligence in spite of the fact that their own intelligence people just testified under oath that not only was there never any intelligence indicating that some unknown video had anything to do with it, but that the administration had access to real-time observation of the event that showed no demonstration of any kind and only showed a coordinated attack. He also lied about there being no request for additional security even though the messages have already been made public. They are trying to cover up the fact that Obama's pro-terrorist foreign policy got good American killed. It is not working. Even their fans in the MSM are reporting on it because they were lied to as well and they're mad. Their partners in the administration lied to them and made them look foolish. Obama is done.

It is a blatant violation of the 10th amendment. And when it is overturned that will not outlaw abortion. It will return the decision to the people, where it belongs. If the people of a state decide to legalize abortion, so be it. If they decide to ban it, so be it. That is how this republic is supposed to work.

If you (or Ryan) truly believe that life begins at conception (and thus that abortion is murder), why would you leave it to individual states to decide whether to legalize it or not?

Obama will win this state BECAUSE of what he has done:

1. Fixing Bush's stock market crash.
2. Getting us out of Iraq and getting us out of Afghanistan very soon.
3. Fixing Bush's housing market crash (yes, the housing market is not 'high flying' like it was in Bush's term, but it shouldn't have been in Bush's term).
4. Getting us the Affordable Health Care Act, which mandates that insurance companies can no longer reject people for pre-existing conditions, which mandates that up to 25 year olds can stay on their parents insurance (I would have preferred a blanket "Can stay on parents insurance as long as they are living with the parents"), etc.

When asked why they have not intervened in Syria like they did in Libya when far more people are being slaughtered in Syria, Biden said that Syria has a smaller population and is five times larger than Libya. Libya encompasses roughly 679,362 square miles. Syria? 71,500 square miles. Libya is nearly 10 times the size of Syria. FAIL. What an idiot. I find it funny that all these leftist bozos here talk about Bush's "illegal" war which had almost unanimous Congressional support in the voting, but they have no problem with Obama helping the terrorists take over Libya (and Egypt) without even asking for, much less getting, Congressional support.

Titllie, the "good samaritan" didn't step over the man and call social services (Caesar). Commands to help others are a personal, not a collective responsibility. The church has some collective responsibility, but we live in a pluralistic society where no one is supposed to be forced to be a part of it or carry them out. And finally, no good work is of God unless God gets the glory, which secular governments don't do. Politicians who use other peoples money to buy votes from others do so for their own glory and reelection campaigns.

Oh Balled-upServer - Delusional again. Not surprised.

The figures you reference may be accurate, but they are totally irrelevant. (waiting for Balled-upServer to chill a bit)

Yes, that IS true. You see, in Presidential elections we use this process called the Electoral College. That comes in 6th grade, so I understand.

With the Electoral College, each state has a certain number of votes, and it is those votes that actually elect the President - strange, eh? Yes, but true.

So, for instance, the entire state of California (37 million) may vote for Romney (never in a million years, but follow along) but he would only get 55 Electoral Votes. I could go on, but that is why national polls are not reliable.

There you go, an advanced Civics lesson for you today.

So while RealMuddyPolitics might get you excited, you have to pay attention to the Battleground state polls. Yea, I know - lots of math. And Lyin' Ryan won't go into math because its long and complicated. He does know his party well.

Maybe you can sit home tonight and run through the numbers. See how bad it really does look for Mr. Howell and his Little Buddy.

Great evening Thursday Orioles win, Steelers lose. The debate -who knows. From the comments by both the right and the left, Biden's body language was very disturbing - it made him look silly. Certainly not something one would like in a VP. Why did he act this way?
On the other hand, Ryan must have been thirsty.
I don't think anything changed. If you want things to continue the way they are, stay with Obama/Biden. If you want some changes made - which may or may not work, go with Romney/Ryan.

You know, I've said this before, I actually don't mind the old/independent Romney alone. I just can't reconcile him being in liege with the Tea Party.

This election is more then just Obama versus Romney, this is about how people view our future. Want more military waste, pointless wars and war spending, while cutting social benefits to these soldiers after their tours of duty? You know, in the name of 'patriotism'? Want more tragic oil spills like the BP Oil Spill a couple years ago? Want unsafe fracking to become wide spread, poisoning the water of countless Americans over time? Want Roe v Wade overturned, and remove women's right to do with their body what they will (within reason)? Want scientific research eliminated, in the name of 'religion'? Want a pathological liar who will say anything, take any side in a situation to temporarily placate the people he's talking to?

Then vote for Romney/Ryan next month.

About the only thing energy wise I agree with him on, is the Keystone pipeline. It'd be positively foolish to not take the oil from Canada.

Biden is a lying prick. Did any of you work today? Wounder how many of you are government workers wasting tax payers money while debating all day. I just worked a twelve hour day, I am not rich, and I will vote for Romney/ Ryan so that my daughter will not have this debt to pay off. Also I would like her to be able to inherit my family's farm without being beat up by inheritance taxes as high as 55%. This is part of the bush tax cuts that will expire the end of the year. Also it would be nice to take my social security money and put it in my OWN ira that will garentee it to me or my heirs. Last but not least I do not want government in control of my medical care. If you really want to know how bad the healthcare bill is, next time you are at your family doctor or even a specialist ask them what this bill is going to do to you once you reach medicare age begining in 2014. You will be shocked!!!!!!

No offense to anyone, but If you actually want the debt reduced, you'd be making a sad mistake in voting for a candidate who refuses to implement a multifaceted strategy including spending cuts domestically, militarily, and to a lesser extent tax increases - starting, but not limited to, the top 2%. Ask Ron or Rand Paul what they think of the Republican ideas of 'debt reduction'.

Romney only promises domestic spending cuts.
Our budget deficit and national debts aren't going to go away in this manner.

On another note, the government doesn't control your health care. That would imply it's a single payer system. It's not. It's actually managed on the state level, state by state through 'exchanges', through the same private health insurance companies that are in business now will be attempting to get your business. Even better, this allows your coverage to be portable - you take it from job to job - unlike this clusterfuck system that our nation has now that, among other things, screws millions of people over with pre-existing conditions in the name of profits.

I don't question there's some problems with the legislation (all legislation does), I can even hear objective counterarguments to it even existing at all (I'd rather see health care reform done right) but the concepts behind Obamacare are rock solid as far as I can tell.

Is the implementation of it going to be? Objectively? I'm not so sure. Only time will tell.

Agreed on all point, Tim. Obama is not and should not be calling for tax cuts when we are in the WORST deficit in history, mainly left to him by George W. Bush Jr. and inflated by George W. Bush Jr.'s unfunded mandates during his term in office.

Alan needs a wake-up call and bluntly needs to stop lying. That is exactly what he is doing: Lying through his teeth about the Obama term in office.

He's also lying about inheritance taxes, because only people with over 1/2 to 1 million in inheritance are hit by inheritance taxes at the federal level and in most states.

You know anyone who is not rich who is going to be hit by those? I sure as hell are not when my parents die, even taking into account every piece of jewelry in our home that my parents have bought over the years, I would be inheriting less than 1/10th of a million when they die.

After reading the last few dozens of comments it is clear many have nothing to say unless it is some insult to another poster. How disgusting.

Biden said he voted against both the Iraq and Afghanistan war resolutions in congress. If Biden is incapable of remembering how he voted, or if he is capable of flat out lying about how he voted, he is not fit for office. Biden said he voted AGAINST both wars. He voted FOR both resolutions.

Biden said “[Syria] is a different country, it is five times as large [as Libya] geographically,” How ignorant can this man be?
Any fool who can look at a map knows Biden is wrong. And his STRENGTH is supposed to be foreign affairs? A fifth grader is better at geography than this fool Biden.

Biden said to the surprise of his boss Choom Gang Barry, “The middle class will pay less and people making a million dollars or more will begin to contribute slightly more,” Biden said of President Obama’s tax plan.

Really? What happened to the $200,000 threshold Obama talks about? Well, that lie was walked back immediately by the regime.

Joe

10:16 am on Saturday, October 13, 2012

Biden stated as fact "The Obama administration has “decimated” al Qaeda"
Proof he was wrong is the murder of 4 Americans in Libya. Proof is Lara Logan.
"“Our way of life is under attack and if you think that’s government propaganda, if you think that’s nonsense, if you think that’s warmongering, you’re not listening to what the people who are fighting you say about this fight.”

“In your arrogance, you think you write the script, but you don’t. There’s two sides and we don’t dictate the terms. In fact after eleven years of war in Afghanistan, we’re rushing for the exits as fast as we can, not only do we not dictate the terms, but we have less power to dictate anything on the world stage.”

“Ambassador Ryan Crocker said, ‘We’ve killed all the slow and stupid ones. The ones that are left are more committed and they didn’t become any kinder or gentler in the last eleven years.’

Joe

“‘Another thing he said. We think we’ve won the campaign and they haven’t even begun to fight.’”
“If you fail to identify the ideological component to this fight, if you fail to identify what your enemy is really fighting for, if you lie about who they really are, I don’t see how you can possibly have the right strategy.” “There’s a narrative coming out of Washington, much of it driven by Pakistani lobbying money and by Taliban apologists. One of my favorite things to read about is how the Taliban today is so unlike the Taliban of 2001, they’re a more moderate, gentler kinder Taliban who just can’t wait to see women in the workplace occupying an equal role in society and great economic prosperity for all of Afghanistan and they don’t really want to take us back 3,000 years into that terrible place I witnessed.”

“And when I look at what’s happening in Libya, this big song and dance, whether this was a terrorist attack or a protest, and you just want to scream for god’s sake, are you kidding me, the last time we were attacked like this was the USS Cole which was a prelude to the 1998 embassy bombings which was a prelude to 9/11. And you’re sending FBI to investigate. I hope you’re sending in your best clandestine warriors who will go in to exact revenge and let the world know that the United States will not be attacked on its own soil, that its ambassadors will not be murdered and that the United States will not do nothing about it.”

Joe

More on the Biden "decimated al Qaeda".
Al Qaeda Winter Pentagon report: Terror group a significant threat to Libya
http://freebeacon.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/LOC-AQ-Libya.pdf
"The report concludes that al Qaeda poses “a significant threat to the state-building process in Libya.”"

Biden stated "Ryan and House Republicans “cut” embassy security by $300 million"

In the Congressional hearing this week "Was the refusal to provide more security caused by budget cuts to embassy security? “No, sir,” Charlene Lamb, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Programs, told the committee."

"The House Republican budget, which Ryan authored, proposed spending about $22 billion less on non-defense discretionary spending in 2014 compared with Obama’s budget, or about 0.63 percent of the federal budget for that year.

Budgets do not typically identify specific cuts, as those are determined by congressional appropriations committees. However, Democrats have extrapolated that $300 million of the $22 billion would be cut from embassy construction, maintenance, and security."

Joe

The BIG WHOPPER from the foot filled piehole of the plagiarist Biden
"The Obama administration “did not know” the Libyan embassy had requested additional security prior to the terrorist attack that killed four Americans"

All the under oath testimony in congressional hearing this week says otherwise.

Biden just threw the entire State Department under that bus with all those bodies fallen in this regime.

So, according to Biden and his puppet Carney, ONLY 2 people in the entire regime were not aware of the many requests for added security. Obama, the President of the United States, and his Vice President. Yea, that's the ticket ain't it crazy Uncle Joe?? that's the ticket.

Joe

10:31 am on Saturday, October 13, 2012

Then there is this line no one is talking about from Biden on the money the "rich" earn.

MS. RADDATZ: Vice President, what would you suggest — what would you suggest beyond raising taxes on the wealthy that would substantially reduce the long-term deficit?
VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN: Not — just let the taxes expire like they're supposed to on those millionaires. We don't — we can't afford $800 billion going to people making a minimum a million dollars. They do not need it, Martha. Those 120,000 families make $8 million a year. Middle-class people need the help. Why does my friend cut out the tuition tax credit for them? Why does he go out after the child — (inaudible)?

"They do not need it, Martha." They don't need it? And who is Biden to say who needs WHAT THEY EARN themselves? Socialist admission form the horses own mouth.

Joe

I forgot another big LIE by Biden the petulant child.

“With regard to the assault on the Catholic church, let me make it absolutely clear, no religious institution, Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic Social Services, Georgetown Hospital, Mercy Hospital, any hospital, none has to either refer contraception, none has to pay for contraception, none has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any insurance policy they provide. That is a fact,” Biden said.

Well, the 35 lawsuits against ObamaCare and it's attack on the Constitutional freedom of religion say he is LYING!

"“But the facts are exactly the reverse,” asserted Kyle Duncan, General Counsel of the Becket Fund. “Under the mandate, nearly every Catholic hospital, charity, university, and diocese in the United States—along with millions of institutions of other faiths—must refer for, must pay for, and must act as a vehicle for contraception, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs. If they do not, they face millions in fines. That is a fact.”"

Lying Biden and Obama and Stephanie Cutter and Ambassador Rice and Jay Carney and Harry Reid et al must be dispatched in a few weeks to the trash bin of history.

We cannot survive 4 more years of radical pathological people running this nation.
We cannot survive 4 more years of a man who has more sympathy for radical Islam then he does for Americans who desire to express themselves with their freedom of speech.

Things that BOTH sides supported but which Bush refused to put into place increased taxes to pay for them, even though the cost would have been PENNIES per person in the United States to pay for each of them.

All together it would have been an increase of 25-50 dollars in taxes a year, something that even the poorest of poor Americans could afford.

A litte bit about Obama's Purple Army the SEIU marxists.

Nursing Home Companies File RICO Lawsuit Against SEIU.
"HealthBridge Management and CareOne, related companies that own and operate nursing homes in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and two other states, filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against the New England Health Care Employers Union, also known as Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 1199NE, and United Healthcare Workers East, also an affiliate of SEIU.

The lawsuit claims the unions violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act through the use of threats, sabotage, and intimidation in a “shake-down” to coerce the companies to accept union demands. The health care companies charge that SEIU’s use of the help of politicians and liberal activists to intimidate them amounted to criminal extortion.

“This action is not about strikes, or union organizing, or collective bargaining,” claims the suit. “It is about a corporate campaign, endorsed and effectuated by Defendants and facilitated by the politicians they support, that is in its essence a shake-down by a lawless enterprise.""

ObamaNation is here.

Palm Beach, Fla. (CBS TAMPA) – The Florida State Board of Education passed a plan that sets goals for students in math and reading based upon their race.

On Tuesday, the board passed a revised strategic plan that says that by 2018, it wants 90 percent of Asian students, 88 percent of white students, 81 percent of Hispanics and 74 percent of black students to be reading at or above grade level. For math, the goals are 92 percent of Asian kids to be proficient, whites at 86 percent, Hispanics at 80 percent and blacks at 74 percent. It also measures by other groupings, such as poverty and disabilities, reported the Palm Beach Post.

Where did we fall down so low? Who IS in charge of this? This will be devastating on those who are asked to not perform to the ability of their peers. But there we have the liberal progressive ObamaNation. Separation of the races for disparate treatment. This is right back to separate but equal. How long now until they say the blacks can't learn as much with the much smarter Asians in the same overstuffed classroom and will want separate classes. So long USA.

Stupid people? Compared to Bush's people managing to let 9/11 happen even though NUMEROUS CIA/NSA analysts were warning that from chatter from Al-Qaeda, there was something bad coming?

Bottom line is that we cannot afford to turn every overseas embassy into a bunker. We especially cannot protect them when we have people in the country that the embassy is in being threatened or bribed into allowing an attack.

The only misstep I see here was turning to the people of Libya for security guards. We should have flown over people from America who spoke the language of the country and used them for security or simply used military personnel.

Best step would have been to recall the ambassadors to America and tell Libya "We are sorry, but we don't think that you can protect our people!"

Joe Biden is no different from the elected for life democrats in this state. If there was ever an argument for term limits, just look at Mikulski and Cardin. As for jumpin Joe, he can dance and make sour milk seem sweet, Obama can do the same, I've called Bama the "pied piper" since he first appeared. Watch all the weak ones dance down the lane after his tune. The folks that are lost souls, that can't think for themselves or want to be covered by a blanket of government plans vote for the current Democratic party. They are certainly not the party of JFK, remember that line about "what you can do for your country" ... not the current popular thinking of the Dems, secure votes by dependency thats the plan for current regime.

We, as a nation have problems that are a lot more serious than Joe Biden not being able to pronounce the name of the 7-11 clerk, but that's all people seem to catch. The problem that overshadows all else in politics today is than neither party gives a damn about Cops, Firemen, Teachers, Plumbers, and yes, 7-11 Clerks. If you aren't a Coat-and-Tie Yuppie with a job that produces no visable goods or services, then you don't matter to Dumbo or Jackass. What this nation needs, before it's too late, is a new Party, one based on Common sense, that looks out for the common man and does what's right for all of us. Ed - As a Democrat, your argument makes a lot of good points. Sometimes I wish for another option. But I think we are seeing part of what it takes to get there with the Tea Party. Besides my personal opinion that they are too far out there, their limited presence has not allowed them to advance their agenda, only clog up the works so nothing gets done. The point is that there must be numbers big enough (or collaboration enough) to make a difference, and the current polarization doesn't help. In MD this year there is an independent candidate for the Senate. While his goals might be worthy, there is little that one voice can do unless he can get other senators to agree with his issues.

Ed, I believe that is because the politicians and their parties have split us into two groups of people. Those who rely on government services and those who pay for them. This is going to get even worse when we see the increasing financial burden on our young people to pay for services for us geezers. There will come a point where the productive young increasing revolt against paying for the debt they did not accumulate, the unproductive and the old.

I believe that the harder we stick it to the productive young, the higher the probability of violent revolt.

While I could go into a lot more detail justifying my theory, I would rather spend time focusing on not sticking it to our young people.

We need to focus on history of action, and not words and promises..

Pres Obama has a proven record of taxing, spending and borrowing. He has a record of not willing to work with the opposition to get things done. While he has a lot of promises to correct things there is no track record.

Gov Romney has a record of running successful business, fixing the Olympics, and working on a bipartisan basis. There is an awful lot I don't like about Romney, but he has a better track record.

3. The day Obama took office, the annual deficit was One Trillion Dollars on spending that already existed of $3.5 Trillion Dollars, a 30% shortfall. Another BFD. He promised to cut the annual deficit in half. He has a track record of not improving things.

You can blame GWB if you like, and maybe there is some truth to it. But like any CEO, if you don't get the results, you should be let go. Even if it isn't your fault. Even Obama said he should be let go 3+ years ago if he did not perform.

1. The tax increases affect high income earners who avoid Medicare tax on investment income.
2. So Obama has to decrease spending which no President before him has ever done?
3. You know the promised is premised on forecasted rates of growth of the economy and unemployment. The forecasts were wrong, the economy was in worse shape than before.

I would love for you or Romney to specify the cuts you would make to spending. Please provide the total you will save. Of course Romney has already promised to increase defense $200 Billion per year. So he begins at a $1.4 Trillion deficit.

Companies are in business to make money. Labor cost are the biggest part of the final product cost. Auto workers make between $25 to $50 an hour with a 5 star pension plan. It's hard to keep your prices competitive when labor prices are eating into your bottom line. Top toy makers have been buying from China for years because they can't compete with the labor cost. I don't see any protest against the toy makers that make billions from overseas labor. Coal miners ask Obama to stop ‘absolute lies’

" Coal miners at the American Energy Corp. Century Mine said they want President Barack Obama to stop what they term the war on coal - and to stop spreading mistruths about them.

Miners gathered Friday afternoon to express their opposition to Obamas energy and environmental policies, which they believe threaten their jobs. Miner Mitch Miracle read aloud a letter the miners mailed to Obama that outlines some of their concerns.

The miners said Obamas campaign team is running ads filled with blatantly false statements about the miners regarding their participation in Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romneys August campaign stop at the Century Mine. These ads assert that the miners were forced to attend the event by the mines owner, Robert Murray.
There are numerous false statements and absolute lies concerning our participation in this event, mostly started by a local shock jock radio host, the miners letter to Obama states. Why would you (Obama) lie about the 500 working miners who have signed this letter? We, the employees of the Century Mine would request you immediately stop these false ads.

This summer, Murray Energy Corp., parent company of the Beallsville mine, cut or relocated 56 workers with the closure of the Red Bird West mine near Brilliant. Murray also cut 29 mining jobs from The Ohio Valley Coal Co.s Powhatan No. 6 Mine. All of this was done, Robert Murray said, because of Obamas war on coal."

"Feds have more than 1,900 investigations open into alleged stimulus wrongdoing"

"With little notice, inspectors generals across federal agencies are piecing together criminal and civil cases into stimulus money that was misspent, wasted or defrauded.

Why It Matters: The $840 billion stimulus plan was designed to be a shot in the arm for the economy and to help create jobs. To the extent that the money was misspent, its benefit was diminished -- so the increase in the federal deficit and national debt yielded less value than intended.

The Recovery Board charged with coordinating efforts among than inspectors generals at more than two dozen federal agencies that distributed stimulus money posted an item on its official blog last month claiming the total amount of money lost to fraud from the $840 billion stimulus program was a miniscule $11.1 million so far.

Vice President Joe Biden even made reference to the figure as he defended the stimulus program from attacks from Republican Rep. Paul Ryan during the vice presidential debate last Thursday. But that number only identifies money that is considered lost to fraud and does not include funds still under investigation or those recommended for reimbursement after audits identified misspending, officials said."

Shotgun spamming strikes again on the Patch.

There is absolutely nothing wrong, and many things right about Above the ground. Presumably this references renewable sources such as wind and solar. Both are unlimited as far as we know.

All fossil fuels have a finite supply. Petroleum and coal - while efforts have reduced their impact, they are a large contributor to global warming. Despite knuckle-draggers' denial, climate change is a significant threat. Fracking for gas seems to address some of the issue, but there are water-quality issues (being worked on), and the possibility of earthquakes in fracking areas - detected and as yet unexplained in Texas.

We will not get off the fossil fuel habit soon, but we need to move in the direction. Renewables like wind and solar are the best we know of now.

Eric Rignot: Really, it's consistent with our understanding of a warming world. Some of the regional details are not something we can easily predict. But the general trends of decay of the sea ice cover and decay of the Greenland ice sheets and ice caps is in line with what we expect.

The Antarctic has not been warming up as fast as the models thought. It's warming up, but slower. So it's all consistent with a warming planet."

We are in serious trouble and ignoring it will not make it go away. This coming election is driving our nation apart and the bickering is just a reflection of it.Did Obama keep all his promises ? We are not in as 'serious' of trouble as people try to make us out to be. Most of our 'trouble' is because we have been too friendly to businesses, allowing them to outsource willy-nilly without any kind of punishment for doing that.

Which any SANE country does when it's homegrown businesses try to flee the country and BS about "We are being taxed too much!" in a whiny baby voice when our tax rates in America are some of the LOWEST ever.

Much lower than during the 1950's and 1960's, at the time of one of the biggest expansions of the Middle Class.

In fact, higher taxes on the rich and businesses encourage them to get out there, hire people and spend their money instead of letting it lie fallow in banks.

This is known historical fact.

The GOP has the Romney/Ryan ticket who lie through their teeth and change the answer depending on the audience they are playing to, they have zero "plans" other than criticize Obama and want 8 years to show us they can do better. Meanwhile the economy is improving, jobs are up, stock market is up, building is up, spending by consumers is up and unemployment is down.

The LIES continue unabated.
President Barack Obama said on Thursday that “We got back every dime we used to rescue the financial system, but we also passed a historic law to end taxpayer-funded Wall Street bailouts for good,” Obama said in Miami Thursday.

The CBO said on the same day "“The cost to the federal government of the TARP’s transactions (also referred to as the subsidy cost), including grants for mortgage programs that have not yet been made, will amount to $24 billion,” said the CBO report, which was released on the same day Obama spoke."

Just like Behghazi Gate, Obama knows nothing and lies about what he DOES know.

“This is about the birth of an entire new industry in America -- an industry that’s going to be central to the next generation of cars,” Obama said in the phone call, according to a transcript provided by the White House. “When folks lift up their hoods on the cars of the future, I want them to see engines and batteries that are stamped: Made in America.” "

A123 Systems Inc. (AONE), a maker of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for electric cars, filed for bankruptcy after failing to make a debt payment that was due yesterday.

A new USA TODAY/Gallup poll of likely voters in 12 battleground states found women voters have propelled Mitt Romney to a five-point lead (51%-46%) over President Barack Obama.

Romney is tied with Obama with women (48%-48%) in the poll, closing what had been a double-digit gap. Romney also leads among men by 12 points (54%-42%). USA TODAY/Gallup polled 869 likely voters in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The poll was taken Oct. 5-11, which was before the vice presidential debate in which Vice President Joe Biden turned off many women voters with his often boorish antics and dismissive laughter.

Balt Observer, you said the exact same thing I bet when Obama was running for the Presidency the last time.

To wit: "There is no way that no gol-darned n**ger is goin' to be elected to my White House!"

You were probably crying in your beer the day after Obama was elected, wondering how the American people could, in your insane opinion, "Be so stupid as to elected a soc'list to the White House."

The truth of the matter is that the American people are intelligent enough to realize that 8 years of Republican policies (perhaps as many as ten if you take into account the number of years the Republicans had control of Congress) got us into a heap big load of trouble.

Honeygo Hal, you are exactly right: A poll that does NOT consist of equal parts independents, conservatives and liberals is worthless in the real world. Our country is pretty much divided in three parts between those, with the independents usually joining the liberals en-masse.

The Obama Choom Gang laid out for months THEIR version of who Romney the man was. The debate showed the people that Obama was all wrong. The people saw for themselves that Obama and his Choom Gang were lying which is their forte.

They saw not only the big lie but saw they don't like the lies and are now paying attention.
Obama even went as far as to say that some other man showed up at that debate and it was not the Romney his gang were portraying. He was right since a LIE cannot show up to debate the Liar in Chief. The REAL Romney was there and he is nothing like what they tried so hard to get people to believe.

Tonight, what will be the next line of personal attack on Romney?
The dog on the roof failed when it came to light Obama ATE a dog.
The war on women failed when they brought in the slut Fluke demanding others pay for her birth control then goes on an expensive European vacation with money she didn't have for birth control.
The rich man theme has failed because most of America works for rich people.
So, whats next from the man who has a record of slurring his opponents in campaigns and getting them to drop out instead of taking them on head to head? What deep personal attack will he lower himself to tonight?

The reason the economy has not boomed the last two years is because of Corporations, which have cut employees to the bone, reduced salaries by 20%, expect less employees to do more work, raised prices by 40% while cutting the amount of the product or service consumers buy/use, taken away most pension plans, expect employees to pay for a 401 K for retirement and subsidize it by collecting what is earned for SSA, all the while VP's lobby Congress to reduce or eliminate the FICA Tax because its an undue burden and try to sell it's employees its really not fair to the corporations. While doing all this they have failed to reinvest in their business because they are just trying to skim as much profit as they can during these hard times. Oh and the CEO of Starbucks makes $22 Million a year selling over priced in my opinion crappy coffee. He is not the only bastard raping America.
