Now Hiring: Wegmans Accepting Applications for 550 New Workers
The Abingdon store is scheduled to open Sept. 18.
The Abingdon store, set to open Sept. 18, is accepting applications for 150 full-time positions. (Click here to apply.)
“There are great opportunities,” company spokeswoman Jo Natale told Patch. “We will spend just about $1.6 million training for the Bel Air store alone.”
The grocer, located at 2941 Emmorton Road, just off Interstate 95, plans to hire 600 workers, 550 of which will be new employees. The store will take applications for the 450 part-time jobs in July.
The business is looking to fill culinary positions, as well as cashiers, customer service representatives and entry-level managers.
“Full-time positions at Wegmans are about building careers,” store manager Al Jackson said in a statement. “I started as an assistant deli and prepared foods manager in Buffalo, New York. Today I have the pleasure—and responsibility—of building a team for a great new location in Maryland.”
Natale said there are no special events planned for the grand opening.
“We typically just open the doors and that’s an event in itself,” she said. “People are always anxious.”
Natale said the store's reach will extend beyond Abingdon.
"We have internally referred to it as the Bel Air store," she said. "More often than that, the Harford County store."
Full-time applications will only be accepted online. They were not expected to be available to the public until April 1 (no joke), but a distribution glitch sped up the process. Fliers were sent to Harford County residents on March 26, almost a week before they were supposed to be received.
“The mail house dropped the postcards a little early,” Natale said. “We do want people to get [online and apply].”
Wegmans, established in 1916, has 77 stories in five states. The next-closest location is in Hunt Valley, where Jackson previously worked.
“I wanted to be where the action is,” Jackson said. “We’re opening stores in this region at a measured, but consistent pace, and I wanted to be part of that effort. Working at Wegmans is an opportunity to challenge yourself, to find out if you’re good enough to grow with the company.”
