Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley discusses the DREAM Act, Abraham Lincoln and his support in Harford County.

Gov. Martin O’Malley expected to get booed in Bel Air’s annual Independence Day Parade.

But before his appearance Monday evening, the Democrat told Patch he has plenty of support in Harford County.

For instant updates, follow Bel Air Patch on Facebook and Twitter.

“We have a lot of good friends along the parade route,” O’Malley said. “My kids and my wife have learned that some of the nicest people are the quiet ones that just simply wave and smile.”

Elected to a second term in 2010, O’Malley defended the DREAM Act he signed this spring, adding that most people who opposed the law do not understand it. It is expected to go to referendum for the 2012 election.

“There are some who try to portray it as free tuition for illegal immigrants, and that’s not what it is,” he said. “Once people learn that and once people kind of break through the hype and the hate that’s been wrapped around it, I think people will make a fair decision.”

O’Malley downplayed suggestions of a possible White House bid, saying he was focused on serving Maryland.

“My ambition is to get us out of this recession and get us to the other side of it,” O’Malley said. “I’ve had to cut the state budget by more than any governor in Maryland history and never ever had a surplus to put towards any priorities, so I’m looking forward to getting out of this recession and I think that’s a goal that should be bipartisan.”

The governor also said some people take their rights for granted: "Some of us confuse our citizenship in the United States with a membership at Sam’s Club."

I have not seen anyone address the Dream Act as "free tuition for illegal immigrants". I have, however, seen many concerned citizens address the Dream Act as "in state pricing" for people who don't pay taxes. Which is what it is. Illegals don't pay taxes. That's what illegal is. It's illegal.

Nope, illegals do pay taxes, there is plenty of information out there for those that wish to investigate the FACTS and become informed. From one of many articles available: Illegal immigrants are paying taxes to Uncle Sam, experts agree. Just how much they pay is hard to determine because the federal government doesn't fully tally it. But the latest figures available (2008) indicate it will amount to billions of dollars in federal income, Social Security and Medicare taxes this year. One rough estimate puts the amount of Social Security taxes alone at around $9 billion per year (and yet they do not reap the benefits of Soc.Sec or Medicare). Paycheck withholding collects much of the federal tax from illegal workers, just as it does for legal workers.

In addition, if an illegal is renting they are paying property taxes via their rent. When they spending money in our economy at stores, on gas, etc. etc., they are paying taxes. Just wanted to clear up the "illegals don't pay taxes" meme. It's simply not true.

Yes illegals pay taxes but nothing near what they cost the taxpayers. They don't pay enough in taxes to cover the English language classes in our public schools. Net cost of illegal aliens is over $1.6 BILLION per year in Maryland alone.

Illegals who are working here either do it under the table (100% tax free) and some steal identity (claim tax exempt on the W2 or file 8 dependants). It is against federal law to knowingly hire illegals.
Paying property taxes by paying rent is a farce. The owner of the property has the pay the taxes even if the place is vacant.

The only thing illegals pay is sales tax.

In the meantime they get free medical care, free schooling (K-12), and free social services. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office illegals are costing American taxpayers sizeable amounts of money.

So much for your lie about them being involved with white supremacist cult. Jews and blacks running a white supremacist cult! You are good for a laugh a minute.

Read about Morris Dee's Southern Poverty Law Center in the article "Church of Morris Dees" in Harper Magazine. The SPLC has crawled in bed with the subversive La Raza open borders network to attack those who support United States immigration laws. By sharing a common opponent, both can profit from joining forces on the attack against good Americans who are concerned about the future.

Bill, better include the entire Goper party in your crime syndicate conspiracy theory who failed to protect our borders the day after 9/11, instead they went searching for fake WMDs spending trillions in another country when it should have been our own. Meanwhile, the Teapublicans in Texas were planning a superhighway straight out of Mexico coming into the U.S. called the Trans-Texas Corridor. In addition, one of the TX Teapublicans is trying to pass a bill stating it's OK to be illegal if you're a landscaper, nanny or housekeeper. Let's start with the Teapublicans on the border allowing such nonsense. BTW, where are you going to get the billions it will cost for deportation that has gone unaddressed for at least a decade (except for 187% St. Raygun who granted them all amnesty). I though teapublicans were for lazy/inept government and cutting the spending.

The way Stewart PHRASED the comment, it’s not enough to show a sliver of evidence that Fox News’ audience is ill-informed. The evidence needs to support the view that the data shows they are "consistently" misinformed -- a TERM he used not once but three times. It’s simply not true that "every poll" shows that result. This is simply what it is ILLEGALS getting what REAL Americans have worked so hard for and earned legally. If you want to come here do it legally. And learn English! Why do we have to have Spanish speaking interpreters at the MVA so these people can get a licence? Why do we have to press 2 for English? O'malley just doesn't get it. He is not for the citizens of Maryland, he is for himself. Do you think any other country would go to all the trouble to make sure we had that lux. Americans are going to have to face the fact that this country is changing. New census data affirms that whites will soon be the minority. Knowing two languages, a.k.a being bilingual, is a good thing, it's called education. Thank goodness we did not get a Teapublican Governor. All the jobs-killing (R) Governor's polls are showing that this country is having buyer's remorse (thousands protesting in the streets and recalls abound). The worst is medicare fraud criminal, Rick Scott of Florida, with an approval rating of 29%. Gov. Perry of Texas has one of the worst deficits in the country (27 billion). He, btw, used stimulus to plug 97%!!! of his state's budget! Texas has even gone as far as to fire an entire city of police. I can't believe the arrogance of Mr. O'Malley's comments. First he gives false rationales for why over 133,000 Marylanders took action against a bill he signed into law during a photo op, but then he doesn't explain how it is NOT free tuition for illegals. Get a clue, 7% of the entire Maryland population that voted in the last election signed the petition against the Dream Act because it's an atrocious bill, not because they are all misinformed and racist.

Then he describes his favorite citizens as the ones who just shut up and do as they are told like sheep. Really sounds like he loves Harford County residents, of whom 10% signed the petition against the Dream Act.

The contempt he displays in his final comment towards legal American citizens proves he is incapable of representing Marylanders. He is fully owned by illegal alien interest groups with deep pockets and he is their hollow echo chamber.

I have seen so many changes in maryland and its not good. I've seen a once beautiful state that had all to offer incl. Nice beaches, lakes, mountains, state parks etc turn into a cess pool of filth, corruption, greed and the destroyers of our state. We are now the 4th highest taxed state in the country. The last state for job creation. I also voted for omalley in his mayor days... I also believed in him and his lies and his ability to pad and hide the truth. I also believed in many of the voices of our elected officials. I no longer do any of it. I check out their voting records. You will learn a lot about a politician by checking out their record. You will find out where our tax $$ are going like the $2billion a year to undocumented aliens and $1billion to educate their children through grade 12 and now subsidize their college that will cost us millions more. Amdactivist: Racist’s attacks are those that appeal to emotion by over generalizing about a group (e.g., all Latinos scam welfare with fake and stolen id) to frighten people with dire consequences. Racism is the belief that certain people have inherent traits and that it is justifiable to treat all in that group differently.

I feel the following statements could be considered racist. “I Believe that Americans...REAL Americans…´ “They pay very little taxes because they claim many dependants. Most pay nothing.. yet most are on welfare and work our jobs and they vote!! Corruptness at its fullest…..” “Identity inc and many others who cater to the criminal activities of Illegal aliens and our own leaders” “New americans who scam welfare with fake and stolen id, work our jobs and vote.”

Moreover, an "argumentum ad nauseum" is one that employs constant repetition in asserting a truth. In the text book of propaganda which is followed by the tea party, it states “The art of propaganda consists precisely in being able to awaken the imagination of the public through an appeal to their feelings, in finding the appropriate psychological form that will arrest the attention and appeal to the hearts of the national masses.”

My opposition to this bill is very simple. Illegal immigrants have commited a crime. Coming into this country without a proper visa is a crime, as is overstaying a visa. They should be apprehended and prosecuted as the criminals they are, not feted and celebrated with welfare and free education at the expense of legal citizens. Rewarding a crime is the wrong answer. The point of paying taxes or not is moot, they are still illegal, and still criminals. There is a path to legal citizenship, once an immigrant is legal, I will open my arms and my wallet to help them in any way I can. The line must be drawn somewhere, or the floodgates will open and we will all drown in omalley's misguided good intentions. I don't hate liberals, I just think they are not realistic about human nature. They are the hippie dreamers, always coming up with a million and one plans for saving the world , and conservatives are the people who have to inject reality into the situation, and always seem to get the bad rap.

If even one legal citizen is denied a seat in a Maryland classroom due to an illegal taking that seat, then that should be all we need to know about this bad law to defeat it.

If you are in this country illegal you cannot get a Social Security Number, therefore, you pay no taxes, state of federal. It is costing the US Government approximately $870 Billion a year for their free food, free rent, free medicine, free medical, free education and who is paying for it, we are. Why don't they round them up like cattle and take them back to the boder and let them return. They used to come into this state from surrounding states to get a drivers license and they always stated they lived in Githersburg or Silver Spring when they were actually from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania or even Delaware. Why, because Maryland never challenged them. When they came into an MVA office for a Learners Permit they were able to take the test in Spanish with all the time they to complete. If one of our children went in for the same test they only had 20 minutes to complete. Now, tell me that this is not preferential treatment.

Merrill: Ever hear of Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from the IRS. An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. It is a nine-digit number that always begins with the number 9 and has a 7 or 8 in the fourth digit, example 9XX-7X-XXXX.

IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status because both resident and nonresident aliens may have U.S. tax return and payment responsibilities under the Internal Revenue Code.

Individuals must have a filing requirement and file a valid federal income tax return to receive an ITIN, unless they meet an exception.

This is how "illegals" pay taxes and most do.

Harry Ball

ITIN are issued for immigrant workers who got a permit and are working here legally. By federal law illegal aliens can not work in the US legally so they work under the table or steal someone's SSN. When they steal a SSN number their W2 is filed exempt or has a bunch of dependants.

The legal definition for 'illegal' is still the same whether you are a liberal or a conservative - or something in between. In this country, if you want to be a law abiding citizen, you do not reward 'illegals' in any way. I would far rather see good students from other states who are citizens get in-state benefits, than any one who cannot even get a passport. There are plenty of colleges in their home countries that would welcome them. That is where they should go. (Of course, that would mean they couldn't get back across the border unless they did it legally) And the idea that they are taxpayers means they have social security numbers.. That requires a birth certificate, so, if they have one that by necessity must also be illegal. Just how much money is being used for education and health services for illegals. It's probably enough to balance our federal and state budgets. As a senior citizen, I have had enough of handouts for nondeserving people, while our bemefots for the people who have supported this country legally are being neglected. Unless the advocates of this Dream Act are ready to support their elders in their old age, I suggest you begin thinking about how and where benefits are extended. Do they go to illegals, or to your aged parents?

Betty: You are mistaken about taxes and the need to have a social security number. As I stated before: “Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from the IRS. An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) from the Social Security Administration (SSA).” They use this to pay taxes and most do.

As far as: “I have had enough of handouts for nondeserving people… Unless the advocates of this Dream Act are ready to support their elders in their old age, I suggest you begin thinking about how and where benefits are extended.” When the Republicans stop HUGE tax handouts to billionaires and oil big business, I will take that compliant seriously. As a senior citizen I only have one thing to say to the Tea Party/GOP: hands off my social security and Medicare! It is the GOP that wants to hang you out to dry so that their rich masters can continue their rape of the middleclass (that is you and me Betty).

Pam: I do not accept any information from FAIR as fair. They are a right wing extremist group that obviously does not understand the 14th amendment as apparently you do not.

The answer to illegal immigration is to make it easier for them to become legal immigrants. However, I do not think you would want brown people to immigrate to the US even as your valued big businesses exploit them for cheap labor and Wal-mart cheap prices. If you wish to end illegal immigration, boycott the businesses that use them.

So let’s just leave this to the voters in a referendum in 2012. I feel confident that Maryland will see the fairness of allowing these children (who do not have a choice of where they live), educated in our schools with taxpaying parents to receive in-state tuition. That is, after all, only fair.

ITIN are issued for immigrant workers who got a permit and are working here legally. By federal law illegal aliens can not work in the US legally so they work under the table or steal someone's SSN. When they steal a SSN number their W2 is filed exempt or has a bunch of dependants.

How am I wrong? FAIR is counting anchor babies. They are part of illegal immigration stats. The government counts them as part of the cost of illegal immigration. Citizen or not, they cost us.
If even one LEGAL citizen is denied a seat in a Maryland classroom due to an ILLEGAL taking it, taxes or not, then this bad law is an abject failure. The voters will decide in the referendum.

Robert: This is known as “ARGUMENTUM AD NAUSEUM: The incorrect belief that an assertion is more likely to be true the more often it is heard. An "argumentum ad nauseum" is one that employs constant repetition in asserting a truth.” Their playbook describes this tactic as “Do not investigate the truth objectively and, in so far as it is favorable to the other side, present it according to the theoretical rules of justice; yet it must present only that aspect of the truth which is favorable to its own side.” If one only gets the “news” from Fox, this is what happens.

It's even worse with the Tanton Hate Cult. They have so many organizations all under control of the Puppet Master. So FAIR will throw out a bogus number of some type of misinformation or fabrication and all the other sister organizations under the same umbrella (CIS, NumbersUSA,VDARE etc. etc.) will repeat it as fact and then they will quote each other to try an further extend it's legitimacy so at the end of the day it's almost impossible to determine where the initial piece of bogus information came from.

California ranks number 1 in welfare at 1,216, 866 recipients followed by New York at number 2 at 391,110 recipients. Deportable Alien

An alien in and admitted to the United States subject to any grounds of removal specified in the Immigration and Nationality Act. This includes any alien illegally in the United States, regardless of whether the alien entered the country by fraud or misrepresentation or entered legally but subsequently violated the terms of his or her nonimmigrant classification or status.

MEChA is an Hispanic separatist organization that encourages anti-American activities and civil disobedience. The radical members of MEChA who refer to themselves as "Mechistas," romanticize Mexican claims to the "lost Territories" of the Southwestern United States -- a Chicano country called Aztlan. In its national constitution, MEChA calls for self-determination by its members to liberate Aztlan. MEChA's national constitution starts out: "Chicano and Chicana students of Aztlán must take upon themselves the responsibilities to promote Chicanismo within the community, politicizing our Raza with an emphasis on indigenous consciousness to continue the struggle for the self-determination of the Chicano people for the purpose of liberating Aztlán."

These anti-American "Mechistas" live with the false illusion that they are being racially discriminated against because they are Latinos while totally dismissing the idea that maybe it is their ideology that is being discriminated against.

Harry, RED STATES ARE WELFARE STATES, they receive more federal funding than they put in. I see you didn't bother to read the source at the bottom of the page: the tax foundation. Since you have reading comprehension skills, I'll post from the tax foundation:
http://www.taxfoundation.org/press/show/22659.html
You little welfare chart tells me nothing, where is the per capita?
Obama did not support illegal immigration, more deportations on his watch than Bush:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/25/AR2010072501790.html?hpid=topnews
http://articles.latimes.com/2010/oct/06/nation/la-na-illegal-immigration-20101007
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2010/07/26/128772646/deportations-higher-under-obama-than-bush
From the article about TX: "The Texas budget is expected to run a $27 billion two-year budget shortfall according to just-released state estimates." What about that don't you understand? The state charts you posted do not support your argument that blue states have the highest budget shortfalls nor did they get more stimulus money per capita, swing and a miss. Lastly, 2 million Faux Viewers out of a country with 350 million people is a blip. Really doesn't matter the Crime Syndicate is being investigated in the UK and soon will be in the US.

Do you know all your "welfare state" info is from 2005? Old info does not cut it as the economy was doing great at that time and Obama has drastically changed things.
BTW use proper terminology next time as I posted the actual amount of people who were getting welfare by state (of course it was the blue states who were number 1 in giving handouts to the lazy).
If Obama is that intent on following federal law, when it comes to deporting illegals, than why have numerous states been forced to enact their own illegal immigration enforcement laws? Why wasn’t the border sealed? Why aren’t ALL illegal immigrants deported? Why did the Democrats try to get the Dream Act approved in the last session and why did Obama support it?

I'll give you a nice easy link to follow concerning the budget deficit for states. Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. They are the authority for budget reporting. It shows without a doubt that blue states have the highest deficit. California ALWAYS has the highest budget deficit since 2009 and projected the highest through 2012. When you add the top 5 blue states together it adds up for more of a budget deficit then ALL of THE OTHER 45 states!

Here is a link on which states get the most stimulus money (blue states of course): http://www.recovery.gov/pages/textview.aspx?data=recipientHomeMap

Harry, someone doesn't know how to do math. Why do red states (lazy handout recipients) receiving more federal government money during good economic times make sense to you? They should be receiving less not more. You still haven't addressed per capita on your little chart. If teapublicans are so worried about immigration why wasn't the border sealed the day of 9/11 instead of funneling our resources into a country on lies of WMD's? This problem didn't just start, it's been at least a decade, try and keep up.

According to a State Department filing by Barbour’s former lobbying firm, The Embassy of Mexico decided to retain Barbour’s services on August 15, 2001, to work on, among other things, legislation that would provide a path to citizenship for foreigners living illegally in the United States—what opponents of immigration reform call “amnesty.”

Since then he is on record stating: "One reason I’ve been successful as Governor is that I’m plain-spoken and use common sense. I tell people what I think, not what I think they want to hear. Before there can be immigration reform, we must secure our borders. Only after that can any reforms be achieved, and those can’t include amnesty. Everybody knows we are not going to put ten or twelve million people in jail and deport them. Once the border is secure, we should develop a responsible guest-worker program and it can’t include amnesty."
