Orioles Search for Ballboys, Ballgirls

An open tryout will be held Saturday at Camden Yards.

You may not be the next Manny Machado, but you may have a shot at being the next Baltimore Orioles ballboy or ballgirl.

With less than a month to go until the home opener against the Minnesota Twins on Apr. 5, the team will hold an open tryout starting at noon Saturday at Camden Yards.

The Orioles are looking for athletic men and women 18 or older for the 2013 season. Participants are asked to dress casually and bring their own baseball gloves, according to a news release. The team asks that ballboys and ballgirls be "personable, customer-service oriented and available to work the entire 2013 season," in addition to being able to field ground balls.

Judges at the tryout will include Orioles officials, MASN broadcaster Jim Hunter, former Orioles catcher Chris Hoiles, Mix 106.5 personality Reagan Warfield and Lite 101.9 personality Greg Carpenter.

Free parking will be available at Lot A outside the ballpark. Participants can enter at Home Plate Plaza and should bring resumes, the team said in a news release.

Are you participating in the tryout on Saturday? Tell us in the comments.

This was originally posted 10 years ago - it was for people wanting to actually try out and play for the Orioles. Now that they actually won some games, they added "ballboy or ballgirl."

John Doe, two different types of tryouts. The Orioles have always had tryouts for potential players who may have slipped through the scouting cracks, even when they were the best organization in baseball 40 years ago. The ballboy/girl tryouts are a totally separate exercise.
Loomis, free attendance to games and the chance to be on the field for the entire game (and I do think they get paid a little) ... don't think too many would call that degrading. Many of them are college kids, I believe.

Back in the day, they were all women, and beyond doubt, older than 13-16 years old! Their primary job was attempting to corral foul balls, doing a little dance during the "Charge!", and flirting with then guys in the front row. We had season tickets at Memorial Stadium, a few rows up from the ball girl on the 3rd base side, so I recall all this pretty clearly. I guess they can't get away with all that now, some people might have their feelings hurt.
