Police Dissuade Residents From Staking Spots Before Parade Day
The Bel Air Police Department warns placing blankets and chairs along the parade route before Wednesday could lead to safety issues.
Wednesday marks July Fourth, and parade goers are eager to mark the perfect spot to watch the floats, bands and patriotic entertainment make their way along Main Street.
The Bel Air Police Department, however, is asking that members of the community show restraint and wait until the day of the parade to set out chairs or blankets.
"When chairs and other items are placed on the parade route to get 'just the right spot' it has created unintended consequences," states a release from Bel Air police.
Unattended chairs left for days can blow into traffic and have damaged vehicles in previous years, police say. They can also prove to be tripping hazards for those walking the sidewalks of Bel Air, according to the release
"There will be plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the parade as it moves through the downtown area, without having to reserve spots days in advance," the release states.
"The holiday parade experience will be more enjoyable if everyone is courteous and helps us enhance the 'town' experience for everyone in attendance."

There are already people setting out chairs and blankets. I don't see any harm in it.

As someone whose car got hit last year by a chir left on the side of the road I have an issue with people wanting a break. I personally think that we should round them up and take them to good will!

No harm, except for a big patch of dead grass where the plastic sheet was.

We've been reserving the front of our office for many years and have held an indoor office picnic which allows our employees the chance to cool off, use the restrooms quick bathroom breaks, and kitchen for drinks, etc. during the parade.

I think it is rude that people are blocking up the sidewalks for them to have a big freaking blanket and chairs all over the place.

Well after dark tonight, I will dig a 10 foot deep pit and camouflage it with a plain blue tarp. The bottom will be lined with pungee sticks and venemous snakes. There will be a sign that reads "please feel free to sit here" on the top.
Welcome to America, and Happy Independence Day!!!

It's been a Harford county tradition for years and years. It was so much fun as a kid to go stake our place for the big parade. People are such party poopers!

And keep the lawn chairs off "your" parking spot after a snowstorm.
Wow... just thinking of a snow storm just made me feel good :)

Maybe the town shouldn't erect the grandstand prior to the 4th either, and maybe they shouldn't put up that ugly plasic fencing around Rockfield until the day of...

Not related to this or anything, but I have 1632 used folding chairs for sale; only $5 each.

Eh, parades are rather boring anyway. Not sure why some people find them so entertaining that they need to set a chair up days in advance, but whatever. To each his own.

its so funny how in belair they dont want you to do this but if you go to any other community that has parades its done without issue. its an American tradition, and has been done in belair for years.

There was a time when this was not done. Now it makes the place look trashy. I think if you want to go see the parade then go see it. There is no reason to put up blankets and chairs. Just because they do it in Dundalk doesn't mean it should be done here.

There was never a time in Bel Air that this wasn't done. It's just that we now have many more people living here. And it is done everywhere. Catonsville, Towson, Harve de Grace, etc.
What's with the snide Dundalk comment?

a True American Tradition I will do what I want it doesn't matter our downtown looks like a homeless camp even for a few days. Claiming property that isn't even your it is a public street. Someone else will clean it up. Teach your children the whole first come first serve is the best you and your stupid wheelchair trying to cross the street should have gotten here sooner. Really Class act the soon to be East Dundalk.

Reminds me of putting chairs out for parking spot when a snow storm hits. It sounds good in theory but what happens if you don't have a parking spot?

They were putting blankets and tarps out Sunday night for Wed. nights parade. A little riduculous I think. Oh well, pre-dawn Tue. morning, I ended up with a very nice 15x15 blue tarp and a folding chair. It was next to the road, I figured they were throwing it out. Thank you!

Every town that has a parade across America does the same thing. It's like trying to tell people not to drink on St. Patricks day. It's just what people do and they are not going to change, so get over it.
