Poll: Narrow Majority Thinks Maryland Is on Wrong Track

New Goucher College poll finds the public is almost evenly split on the job performance of both Gov. Martin O'Malley and the Maryland General Assembly.

A narrow majority of Marylanders believe the state is headed in the wrong direction and most are split on the job performance of Gov. Martin O'Malley and the General Assembly.

Forty-seven percent of those surveyed in a poll conducted by the Sarah T. Hughes Field Politics Center at Goucher College believe the state is on the wrong track compared to 44 percent who think it is going in the right direction.

The same poll gave mixed reviews on the job performance of the governor and state legislators.

Forty-six percent of Marylanders polled said they held a favorable view of O’Malley compared to 45 percent who said they held an unfavorable view. When asked O’Malley's job performance as governor, 47 percent approved and 43 percent disapproved.

The governor fared slightly better than the 188 members of the Maryland General Assembly.

When asked about the job performance of the General Assembly, 38 percent of Marylanders polled said they disapproved and 38 percent said they approved. A quarter of those surveyed indicated they “don’t know," according to the poll.

The poll, conducted between March 3-7, involved 791 Maryland residents via landline phones and cell phones. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

Narrow margin my butt! A 3% difference is significant. A closer definition of narrow is the favorable view Marylanders have of the governor, 46% favorable, 45% unfavorable. 47% of Marylanders think the state is going down the toilet. Do you think the administration will take that fact to heart? Recently, thousands of patriots showed up in Annapolis in opposition to the governor's anti gun legislation. On several different day too. Do you think the governor & legislature will heed the voter's feelings? We'll see.

It is, factually, statistically insignificant and the real numbers could just as easily be the opposite (narrow approval), FYI.

This Goucher College polling sure is getting a lot of press from this blog guy! Slow news week, I guess (though not really considering all the active and recently signed MD legislation - not that anyone wants to see another worthless 1500 comments on the gun control issue).

You are correct Mark that a patriot want to reduce gun violence. However, O'Malley & the paltry few that showed up in favor of his proposed legislation are wrong in how they want to go about it. Nothing that is in the bill will reduce the crime that is there now. The facts are that straw purchases are not a problem & fingerprinting will do nothing. The other facts are that thousands have appeared before the legislature & at rallies in opposition to the bills. Yes, there were about a hundred at the rally in favor of it, & only 32 signed up to testify as well. That tells you that the overwhelming majority is correct in their opposition.

If you want to reduce gun violence then address the real issue. Poverty and dependency enabled by government. That right there causes most of the problems in our cities i.e. crime, gun violence. By the way who supports and enforces this ideology? Democrats.

And that means what Steve? No one is supposed to have their say? "since when do "Counties" count?"
Funny you should mention that, FIFA. Since the US uses the electoral college for president so that smaller states don't get shortchanged, how about we start using it for gubernatorial elections, so that the city & a few counties don't rule the state?

The city police didn't "pay any attention to illegal aliens" and even stopped them in their car for a traffic violation and the pair went on to kill 7 people with an illegally owned "assault weapon".

Then the city or state didn't "pay any attention to illegal aliens" and they are on their 3rd very expensive trial for slicing the necks of 3 of their own young relatives and almost beheaded them. 3rd trial. "didn't pay any attention to illegal aliens".

Go with that.

Why is the Maryland administration opposed to designating English as our Official Language?

Why did the administration support the Dream Act?

Why does the administration support the concept of Sanctuary Jurisdictions?

Why does the administration oppose Secure Communities?

Mr. Patro...I agree with you that it is a worthy cause to reduce gun violence, but the bills that the Governor supports really don't do anything to reduce violence. Anything that would have been a real deterrent to a would be criminal was thrown out in the Judicial Committee and on the Senate floor, in the name of "Budget constraints" and "HIPAA." I don't agree that being hard on guns and soft on criminals will do anything (I guess "for the children" works if it doesn't affect the budget/play on a political agenda) . All they are pushing for is a gun/money grab. They can't go after handguns after the Heller case, so go for the next big thing. I don't believe that you should force teachers, etc. to carry a gun. It's a right. If you choose not to use it, that's up to you. But don't try to Jim Crow/take away a right from somebody. That's the beauty of our society. You can choose to not exercise in a right if you don't agree.

How about locking up criminals who use illegal guns in crimes instead of letting them back on the streets 24 hours after getting picked up? More than 1/2 of murderers are previous felons!

I don't know how people can approve of tax and spend O'malley. He raised taxes last year, now they are trying to raise the gas tax this year. It's out of control. Wasn't the casinos supposed to solve the revenue problem.

Now O'malley is also pushing to repeal the death penalty, yet is also promoting strong gun control, knowing that criminals don't obey gun control. We are sending a mixed message to criminals. O'malley is not taking steps to reduce violence (note that the Senate voted down increased penalties for gun violence) or to fix the revolving door justice system.

The ONLY thing O'malley has done good was the civil marriage act.

What about those of us who frankly don't notice state or local government much - a lack of intrusiveness (other than the ever sprouting speed cameras) that I generally appreciate. Having lived for a few years in New York with its dysfunctional state legislature that's constantly feuding with its governor, I think we have it pretty good here in Maryland with our boring government. I am glad the governor got behind the push for marriage equality this year and I also support his effort to repeal the death penalty. There's too much crony capitalism with the liquor lobby here, but they are an exception. We don't have organized crime controlling the trash collection or the unions here and the schools are anywhere from tolerable to fantastic depending on where you live. I've always thought we get rather good value for our tax dollars in Maryland.
