POLL: Where do you Buy Groceries in Harford County?

With so many choices, it can be hard to settle on one store.

ShopRite has remodeled its stores. Wegmans and Harvest Fare are new to town. There is a Mars opening in place of the old SuperFresh in the Bel Air Plaza. And who can forget about the Super Walmart in Fallston? (Is there another one moving from Abingdon to Bel Air?)

Patch wants to know where you do most of your grocery shopping and why. Is there a store you prefer that's not on the list. Tell us about it in the comments.

i shop at Mars, Shoprite (only for certain specials) and mainly Giant. I have absolutely no desire to go to Wegmans. I earn up to 80 cents off a gallon of gas at Giant and they always have been friendly and prices on specials are good. I look through all the sale papers and make the lists of who has what and then make the round trip. If it's not on sale, I don't buy it and I also shop at Dollar General on occasion, Walmart in Aberdeen only for a few things, never meats! and find that Shoprite and Weis are more expensive on a lot of things, hence I don't go there unless it's something on a special sale. Giant is the one for me and I will stay loyal to them. I have no desire to be like all the other sheep and flock to the new guy in town (wegmans). Also, never, ever shop at Redners, junky place, junky stuff and not that great prices.

I have to admit, I'm starting to feel a little guilty as I drive past Giant on my way to Wegmans. I did like Giant a lot and their employees were always friendly, but the variety of stuff they have at Wegmans and their very reasonable prices blows Giant right out of the water. Not to mention, Wegmans great customer service is refreshing. A Wegmans employee made a mistake on my pizza order the other day and came out from the kitchen to apologize to me personally for the mix-up. On top of that, the manager also came out to apologize and gave us free wings as well. I did not expect that.

I'm curious how the Giant on 924 near Wegmans is doing as Wegmans is practically next door, I'm sure their business has been hurt a bit. I still go to Giant in Forest Hill due to their later hours and selection, I like Wegman's selection but do not enjoy the crowd or parking lot (or longer driver for me) haha.

For product and the freshest fish around - Wegman's, hands down.
for decent meat i go to Safeway. For things i need every day, or forgot, i'll stop at Shoprite.

Wegman's is too far away. I've been into one and found that the prices are far too expensive. I shop at Shoprite. Double coupons, online coupons and other ways to save using your Shoprite card. With the economy the way it is, you need to get the best deals.

Wegmans doubles coupons too. You can also save with their shoppers club card. Everyday prices are cheaper at Wegmans. They do have expensive cuts meats and exotic produce that you can't find at any other local stores, and their everyday values can't be beat. Plus you don't have to worry about getting there "this week" for the $1.29 peanut butter, the price is good THRU 2011!

I love wegmans prices and friendly employees. It has made me not need to shop anywhere else. Also I have never really liked shopping at ShopRite. The staff at ShopRite always seem like it is a hassle to have to help customers find things.

I've had ShopRite employees be downright rude to me. I even wrote a letter once to the Kliens family. Sadly, they never felt the need to reply. I guess their customers just don't matter to them.

I shop at Aldi's then go to Aberdeen Walmart..occasionally I'll stop at the Stop & Save in Edgewood...I shop around for soda deals...but stay away from Shop Rite..I don't like their policy you have to spend so much before you can get the soda sale price...that along drove me away from there...

I love Wegman's but I still shop based on what is on sale at the individual stores- mostly Kleins and Weiss. It's worth the extra trips to go to multiple stores if the savings are worth it.

Redners has the nastiest meat and produce sections I have EVER witnessed. Not to mention the employees there are RUDE and unhappy. Wegmans is a nice addition to town, Mars is always friendly and is a home grown name, much like Kleins is. Long story short, everything except Redners, gross.

Yes, but you can't blame Mars for the neighborhood! Mars has pleanty of safe locations but I will agree with you that the Edgewood location at night is asking to get jumped. Redners is just gross to me, I find rotten produce items, correction REALLY REALLY nasty/rotten produce items. Deli and Meat dept. are all awful. Grocery selection is decent, but perishable departments really just plain suck, I have always loved Mars and will shop there when the new one opens instead of driving to Aberdeen.

I didnt say that I blame Mars for their crappy Edgewood location. However, I will not shop there because of where it is. On more than one occasion, I have been almost plowed over by some scum bag shoplifter running through the parking lot from an employee chasing them. Not to mention, the countless times, that there has been police there for some reason or another.
I am actually really shocked by your experience with Redners. Are you referring to the one in Joppatowne or Hickory? I buy all of my produce from there (Joppatowne) and have never ever had a problem with it. I get a lot of my meats from there as well and it has always been good.

The one in Bel Air is just awful, I have been to the one in Joppa, but it is usually out of the way for me so I don't usually stop in, but I didn't have a complaint there. It must be the management of the Bel Air location.

Walmart... and I absolutely hate to admit it. With Weis mostly doubling it's prices, their milk alone sitting at $4.19 a gallon, I have no choice. Weis has pinned us to the wall by being the only player in town. Havre de Grace has failed to bring in another supermarket with decent prices (facing the facts, Acme wasn't cheaper than Weis when it was around) and Food Lion is right in line with Weis's prices. Walmart just does it cheaper (most the time). How about a Wegman's up on the hill at 155 and 95 and a farmers/Amish market down where Sav-a-Lot was (yeah, I am STILL pushing that Amish market idea but no one is listening)? Sounds good to me.

The produce department in Weiss is seriously bad; they ask $3.99 for a cauliflower that is starting to turn, and the stalk is so dried out it has a hole in it. Don't even bother about complaing, it is "Corporates" fault.

Weiss pricing is artifically high, but I have noticed, since Wegmans opened, that the checkout lines at Weiss are smaller.

We finally went to Wegman's on Monday. The store is beautiful and the cafe and ready to go and "gourmet" sections are great. But the main area wasn't impressive, it's a grocery store. I'll stay with Kleins/ShopRite at Festival. Especially since the renovation, it's great. What happened to supporting the home grown businesses?

We visited Wegmans a couple days after it opened, It was ok. I found most of the prices much higer then WalMart, Weis, or ShopRite. I like Weis meats because most of them are Black Angus and I find them very good. ShopRite has good sales. But if I'm going to Abingdon area we go to BJ's where really on Hoildays we spend the most buyinmg in bulk. I really don't think Wegans is going to hurt any of the stores in our area. Each has their own specities Mars hjas the BEST Yellow COCONUT CAKES, and the freshes Holiday Candies it seems. ShpRite the Best Deli Meats, Weis the Best other meats. BJ"s The best price mostly on STRIP STEAK. So shop around. There is enough people to keep them all open. By the way I heard that for those that like to shop Save - A- Lots, its coming to the old Acme store on Rt 40.

Redner's has meat from out of the country. Can't trust it, but has good prices on produce. Safeway has the best meat around. Shop Rite has the best canned and boxed prices. Can't wait for Mars!! Great bakery and good prices for lunch meat. like Wegman's for their take home food to microwave, otherwise way too expensive.

I haven't liked ShopRite since they expanded into snooty.
I miss the basic Kleins store. It had what I needed at the price it should be with a floor plan that made sense. Wegman's has 6 different areas for their carrots and two different areas for the eggplants. Give me an old fashioned store that carries the basics.

ShopRite sells icecream cakes at the entrance door. It would melt before the grocery shopping was finished. And now that they sell fancy expensive fish, the basics are over priced and sit on the shelves so long that I've had to return fish the same day I bought it because of it's smell. .... I was in a line at Wegman's for cod, ironically, both people in front of me asked for cod as well and were pointed in the direction of the frozen foods.

I've seen several "no Wegman's for me" comments. I'm not sure if these folks are put off by the sheer size of the store, or the notion that they're a NY company or something else. It's not as simple as saying "buy local" or support an in-state grocery chain. I believe the only Maryland Grocery Chain in Harford is Giant. Shoprite is a NJ chain - Klein's is now part of that. Walmart often has the lowest prices, but the choices and quality are often a trade-off.

Certainly Wegman's offers an amazing number of choices, and some crazy expensive items. But the "regular" groceries virtually the same price as the other stores. More importantly, Wegmans has hired more than 500 Harford County residents. And Wegman's sets the standard for work culture in the food industry, with high pay and benefits. I challenge you all to google "Wegman's culture" and check out all the ways that Wegman's stand out from the rest. Perhaps the other groceries have some lessons to learn from the new kid on the block.

We make the trek every 2 to 4 weeks to H-Mart in Catonsville. The produce moves out of this Asian market so fast there’s no chance of it not being fresh. The prices have always been better by far than any store around here and the selection is outstanding. You’ll find things there you have no idea what to do with. Fish, turtles, rabbit, duck, frog, you name it. It’s like being on Chopped. Ever tried fresh longan, rambutan, durian, banana blossom, guava and on and on? We’ve usually been able to fill 1 and a half to 2 carts for the same price as 1 locally. Wegman’s was too yuppie for me. I don't go to the grocery store for ambiance - give me fresh and cheap any day.

Where to start...
Giant was bought by Royal Ahold, a Dutch company, in 1998.
ShopRite is a cooperative. The Kleins still own all of their stores.
Mars is also a Maryland company.
Walmart is a public company, so anyone can be a part owner by buying stock.
Wegmans is owned by the Wegman family of New York.

Grew up in Ny with wegmans. Moved here in 2001, and disliked every grocery store here. I will give Giant the most improved award, but I will still do most of my shopping at wegmans. A few a items might be pricey, but people you know every store has a better deal on something. It depends on what type of things you buy. I promise Wegmans will deliver on quality and service. I grew up on them. Get to know the people there and you will love it. Gianelli sausage anyone?

I used to shop at the Klein's in the Festival...until Shop Rite took over. The whole atmosphere in the store changed and it was not a pleasant experience anymore. I also had a horrible experience with a cashier...she did not even acknowledge my presence and continued a disgusting conversation with the young girl bagging my groceries. I spoke to a manager that day and then went home to e-mail the company. They did reply with a letter and gift card; however I gave the card to my church for their food bank. I will not shop at Shop Rite for food again. I do, however, LOVE the pharmacy and the people that work in that dept. I will continue getting my meds from them.
