Cal Ripken grew up in Aberdeen.

His mom is still a resident in the city where he grew up and went to grade school.

Vi Ripken is still a visible figure in the city—volunteering, participating in events and patronizing local businesses.

So Patch asked Cal Ripken during Friday's news conference if he and his family still feel safe in their hometown after Vi Ripken was abducted at gunpoint last week.

» Follow the Vi Ripken case here.

Violet Ripken, 74, was taken from her home by a man hiding in her garage between 7 and 8 a.m. on July 24, and returned unharmed to her neighborhood, where she was found tied up in her car around 6:15 a.m. on July 25, police said.

Stay with Patch for updates.

And he should be "unsafe" because. . . .??? Was his mother truly in danger? Was his mother injured? Was she not fed? Was she not allowed to smoke? Was she taken back to her home harmed? Was any damage done to her vehicle? Did this man know WHO she was? Did this man STEAL anything of value from her? Was any money missing? Did the alleged perp know Cal Ripken, Jr? or that this was the "Ironman's--whatever that means--mother? The answers to all of these questions are No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, and No. I think the person hurt MOST in this case was Cal Ripken, Jr. himself. And, why? I believe it was because this guy had no idea who the woman was and couldn't care less whether there was "Ironman" memorabilia in the trunk of this car. I think his bruised ego will heal over time though. And, that's probably why the family still feels safe living in Aberdeen. Again--why shouldn't they? IMO, this never happened. Again--this "story" made headline news less than 2 days after the headline of "Katherine Jackson Reported Missing." Hmmm. That story got a lot of media attention. Of course, that was/would have been a "high-profile" case (seeing that she is the mother of the late Michael Jackson). But, Cal Ripken, Jr.? Please. Go to another Country and mention Cal's name. See how many people know of him or even heard of the man. I'd be willing to bet--nobody.

Obviously Ma'am you were either snubbed by a member of the Ripken family or felt you were mistreated by one of them for some reason. Your venomous comments are quite frankly upsetting and irritating. You seem to have a dislike for this family. You have commented on each and every article about this case to express your opinion. We get it, you have your opinion about what happened to Mrs. Ripken. The concept of Free Speech so often misundrestood by most Americans, includes the responsibility to speak your opinion with respect for others. Hurtful or inflammatory speech is best kept to yourself or at least off a public forum like this. I'm not sure why you'd think that the Ripken family, whom I am quite sure, if you go to other parts of our country would know exactly who they are as well as other countries, would need this type of publicity or notority. They are a family who gives to others and makes their living doing what they do best, baseball and that involves a lot of youths. I'm sorry to have read any of your comments and wish they were able to delete all of them. Just because there is a forum to express yourself after articles on the Patch or Explore Harford or any news website for that matter doesn't mean you necessarily should. You seem very unhappy and miserable and I hope you find peace and happiness without having to express your venom here regarding Mrs. Ripken and her family and whatever happened in this case.

The increase in crime and sex offenders in this town is astounding. It has changed almost overnight. I moved out here to get away from City crime and the same type of crime is right out my back door.

Oh Cheryl--I'm so very sorry that you think my comments are mean and nasty. I don't have anything personal against the "Ripken" family. I just do not like people who make up stories (and, in my opinion, this whole story was "made up"). If you look at all of the facts, you would smell something fishy as well. But, I'm glad you express yourself as thinking the Ripkens are so giving. But, like I've said previously--I had a friend who personally worked for them. They are not as nice as you make them out to be (or so I was told by a former worker). Anyhow, that has NOTHING to do with my opinions in this case. And, on the contrary, I am not unhappy nor am I miserable. I'm very happy and content with my life. I just do not understand why the Ripkens are making a Federal case out of this (getting the FBI involved--getting on America's Most Wanted, etc.) for something that turned out to be "nothing" (if it's even true). And, even if the story were true, this is not THAT much of a PRIORITY case as the media is making it out to be. There are far more serious crimes going on in this Country that should take first priority. Again--I think it's sad that their making so much ado over this. Yet, people are murdered daily and you will never see billboards looking for the fugitives. Think about that one, Ms. Cheryl. And, please do not accuse someone you know nothing about of not being happy. I have God in my life. Perhaps, you also need Him. Live your life. Be happy. :D

Yeah funny ha ha how some people got cut off touting their opinion on one article about Mrs. Ripken suddenly switch to another article to bore us to death. Let's stick with the facts please.

What facts, Yvonne? So many conflicting "facts" that make this story unbelievable. I would also like to ask, "How did the police obtain the so-called "alleged" video survelliance" footage? It wasn't until AFTER Ms. Ripken told of her "kidnapping" ordeal that this footage was released. So, if Ms. Ripken was blindfolded, how did she know what "store" he went into? Supposedly, her hands were tied behind her back. I highly doubt the "alleged" kidnapper would be so kind as to inform her EXACTLY where he was, what the name of the store was and the time he went there (so the police could obtain this footage). Nothing that was said about this story on the news or by the police makes any sense. If this man really DID kidnap her (again, I don't believe it happened); but, IF he did kidnap her, why wouldn't he have just taken her car, taken her money, taken so much more? I mean, after all, he supposedly is already in trouble for allegedly carrying a gun and kidnapping her; so, why didn't he steal anything from her? Why did he return her to the same location in her neighborhood? And, if that area was supposedly surrounded by the Aberdeen PD, why didn't ANYONE notice the vehicle at the time it was returned? Sorry--but, none of it sounds true. Again--I believe this case has more to do with Cal than Ms. Ripken. Google search ALL of the news articles. Notice how they continually talk about Cal's "baseball" statistics in EVERY article, which has nothing to do with this case!!

Yvonne, the whole point of a blog is to tout one's opinion.
