UPDATED (9:20 p.m.)—Maryland State Police continue to investigate an incident that closed the Conowingo Dam to traffic for two hours Wednesday night.

At 6:44 p.m. on Jan. 2, a driver called police to report a disabled vehicle, according to Corporal Raymond Lynn of the Maryland State Police North East Barrack.

Police arrived to find a passenger vehicle; the driver was not found, Lynn said.

“We’re investigating it as a possible suicide,” Lynn said. 

Police closed Route 1 at Route 222 for more than two hours to conduct a search and rescue operation.

First responders from Rising Sun, Port Deposit and the Susquehanna Hose Company assisted with the investigation.

The Department of Natural Resources, Exelon and Delaware State Police Aviation also participated in the search, Lynn said.

Crews cleared the scene at approximately 9:15 p.m. and were unable to locate anyone, according to Chief Scott Hurst of the Susquehanna Hose Company. 

Maryland State Police opened the road shortly after that but police continue to search for information. Said Lynn: “We’re still conducting an investigation.”

Drivers should consider alternate routes if traveling on U.S. Route 1 Wednesday night near the Conowingo Dam.

According to the Maryland Department of Transportation, as of 8:50 p.m., Route 1 is completely shut down past MD Route 222 in Cecil County.

The Cecil Whig is reporting that the road is closed while police are investigating a possible suicide at the dam.

Alternate routes to cross the Susquehanna River are the Tydings (Interstate 95) and Hatem (U.S. Route 40) memorial bridges.
