1 Bel Air Resident Died, 3 Hospitalized in Accident

The accident occurred in front of the Fountain Green Swim Club.

UPDATE (5:14 p.m.)—A Bel Air woman died in this morning's accident on Maryland Route 543 in front of the Fountain Green Swim Club near the intersection of Foxborough Drive.

Carolyn Dicocco, 64, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a passenger in a 2010 Lexus that was being driven south on Route 543 by her husband. Nicole Ashley Albers, 27, also of Bel Air, struck the Lexus "head-on" while driving north in a 2002 Chrysler 300M, according to a release from Maryland State Police.

Dicocco's husband, Albert, 65, was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center by a Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company ambulance. Albert Dicocco has since been discharged from the hospital.

Albers and Alycia Hoffman, a 23-year-old Bel Air resident who was a passenger in the Chrysler, were flown to Maryland Shock Trauma by medevac. They are both in "fair" condition, according to police.

Maryland Route 543, reopened shortly after 4 p.m., was closed for about five hours. The incident is still under investigation.

---

One "elderly" female has died in a two-vehicle accident on Maryland Route 543 in front of the Fountain Green Swim Club at about 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Two medevac vehicles transported two patients, according to Rich Gardiner, spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association. He said "multiple rescues to extricate victims" were being performed.

Two patients were flown to Maryland Shock Trauma with "serious injuries" and a third was driven to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Gardiner said. The three patients being transported to hospitals were all women in their mid-30s.

One firefighter was taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for "heat issues." Five ambulances responded to the scene.

"[The] road is closed and will be for several hours," Gardiner said.

There seems to be an accident on 543 at least twice a week! Especially at the corner of 22. Why isn't something being done to figure out how to lower the accident rates on this very dangerous road. My heart goes out the three woman and their families, prayers for all involved.

We've had so much traffic coming down Foxborough Dr. I figured there had to be an accident nearby. Thanks for being THE place to go for information. So sorry for the lady who was killed!

Renee, most of the accidents are at the corner of 543 & 22. When you have a Royal Farm store and a Burger King right across from one another and the entrance to both just a few feet away from each other it makes for "an accident waiting to happen"! Can't tell you how many ALMOST accidents I've seen and almost been a part of. I really don't understand the people who want to turn left from the Farm Store onto 543! There is always a line of cars waiting to make the left onto 22 and you CANNOT see oncoming traffic! But these idiots keep trying. And now for the idiots who try to turn left coming OUT of Burger King because they want to get on 22, do out the other exit onto 22! Whoever was the planner who thought this wouldn't be a problem should be made to drive in and out of both these establishments during heavy traffic every day for a few days, just to get a taste of what WE put up with ALL the time!

What really do you expect people to do if they want to turn left onto 543 from Royal Farms?

Robin I go out on the 22 side and turn left right into the turn lane to get onto 543. I find it is so much easier.

I always used the 22 exit when it was an Exxon. So much easier to cross eastbound 22 and get right into the left turn lane for Rt. 543. The light stops the traffic for you, not backing up traffic to block you. Now I make the decision on whether to use WaWa or Royal Farms based on where I'm going next.

I live off of 543 and at certain times of the day, I go to Wawa instead of Royal Farms...if it's the redbox I need, I hit the one at walgreens by safeway...I can make a big circle and it's a series of right turns for me

Don't forget the idiots who insist on turning left into Royal Farm off of 543 when they can easily make a right turn in off of Rt. 22. People need to think before they drive! That Royal Farm entrance needs to be right turn in and right turn out only.

Sorry but the People who turn left into Royal Farms are Not idiots! Yes people do need to think before they drive like the people who hit the so called idiots! The only reason there are accidents at this spot is because people fly around the corner from 22 onto 543 and are NOT paying attention!

Glad you posted this, I was going to say the same thing! Both of the places need to be a right turn in and out only!

I was wondering the same thing Todd! As for the Royal Farm...that is just insane! I almost got hit just last week due to someone trying to make a left into Royal Farm from 543. What the heck people, turn in from Rte 22!

People need to stop cutting around behind WaWa on Hillside. People fly through there like they are still on 543. I have nearly been hit head on pulling into my neighborhood by a Wawa Shorti-cutter.

Why are you making people think this has anything to do with the intersection at 22. If you are a resident of the area you KNOW Fountain Green Swim Club is no where near WAWA.

I'm not... following up on others comments and related dangerous driving in the nearby area. That intersection is far more dangerous than the FGSC.

I think the issue is more of a speed tolerance thing. My daughter said that a state trooper told the kids at her school that 15 mph over the speed limit was tolerable....that's ridiculous. There should be a no tolerance law in place for certain areas.

I think with drugs involved it is more than texting. That area of 543 at Fountain Green Swim Club you can see for a mile away. No reason that this happened except negligence.

My thoughts and prayers are with the DiCoccos. Such a senseless tragedy. No one should speed anywhere on 543, especially in front of the swim club!. I hope justice is served. Carolyn was a wonderful lady...RIP.

So Sad, Someone hit me on 22 b/c they were texting and almost killed us. People are just not paying attention to driving. At least 2-3 accidents a day on Rt. 22. Senseless. Our prayers got to the DiCoccos family.

This is so very sad,I know the lady that was killed. And i do believe if these girls have a criminal record then it needs to be looked at.I have a severe accident and i was not killed but i have had mulitiable surgerys because of someone else's stupidity, people need to remember when your driving then that is what you are suppose to be doing not texting, not talking on a phone sometimes your stupidity causes someone else death and Trauma....Think about it.

loretta, I agree! The stretch where the accident happened is one long straight away, no curves at all. Apparently in all their other arrests, they learned absolutely NOTHING. It's past time to stop molly-coddling these people. It's just a sensless tragic occurance. My sympathy goes out to her family and the friends here who have posted.

Yes, Crystal (and Matt, and anonymous) - anyone can be involved in an accident. But, according to the law, a past record does legally have an affect on how this should be dealt with if they are found culpable. Sentencing is most definitely affected by a past history of criminal activity, making an extensive criminal record very relevant to this current investigation.

missed my point- past bad behavior does not equal future guilt. If she was guilty of a crime (which I hear is likely), then pile it on. Until then, speculation is a waste of energy.

That car accident is really sad I totally feel for Mr. Dicocco he lost his wife samething happen to my father back in 1989 my mother was killed in a car accident but it was a police officer that killed her. So I can relate with how he must be feeling right now. As far as the girl Nicole that was driving the other car I personally know her and hopes she pulls through in the hospital. Mr. Dicocco and Nicole and everyone else that was involved on the accident will be on my prayers.

Hold up so quick to judge thats whats wrong with people today you,all judge you dont kno what happen you was not in either of the cars when this happen so you cant speak but I guess thats what happens when you have people out there that think they no it all. What the hell does a criminal record have to do with anything you mean to tell me that if someone has a criminal record and gets in a car ACCIDENT they should be punished for that no they shouldnt there is a such thing as people do stupid things and they live and learn and they get there lives together. So if the shoe was on the other foot and you had a criminal record and u got into an accident and they was using that against you, you would be the first one to say thats not fair but since this has nothing to.do with you , your so quick to judge. You dont know that girl from a whole in the wall she could be the sweetest girl you ever met I bet if she was.your friend

for the first time in memory, the Md. State Police issued a 'robo=call' asking for anyone with any information, videos or eye-witness accounts regarding the fatal at the Fountain Green Swim Club to please contact them. Obviously the police are doing all they can to resolve the fault issue. Thank God I was not near that terrible scene, but some of those who were should contact the MSP ASAP....while things are fresh in the mind.

I live in Foxborough Farms and I can guarantee speed was a factor in this crash. People do not realize how detrimental speed in a residential area can be. I have encountered near misses in this area on a frequent basis because people think that going 55mph (or greater) in a 40mph zone is okay. In fact I have been passed illegally (in the center turn lane) several times this past week because I wasn't going "fast enough" for people who think they are above the law. Whether people intend to speed or not they do. I would urge anyone driving through this area (or any other) to pay attention to the speed you are driving. My sympathies go out to all involved in this tragedy. Maybe a speed camera is the answer!
