UPDATE: Fatal Accident In Bel Air Causes Traffic Delays

One man was killed in the crash.

UPDATE (8:25 p.m.)—A motorcycle crash claimed the life of a Perryville man and delayed traffic in the Bel Air area Friday afternoon.

Around 2:18 p.m. a 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle, and a silver 2010 Hyundai Elantra crashed in the area of Route 22 and Route 543 in Bel Air, according to a release from Maryland State Police with the Bel Air Barrack.

Police determined a 17-year-old Bel Air boy of the 200 block of Fairwood Drive was westbound in the Hyundai when he tried to turn left into Wawa, according to the release.

The car crossed in front of the motorcycle, driven by 49-year-old Monte Alonzo Greenhow of Perryville, the release states. Greenhow tried to avoid the car, but ultimately crashed into the back of it and was ejected, police say.

A helicopter was initially called to the scene, but that request was later canceled, police said.

Greenhow, of the 200 block of Thomas Point Way, was taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air while suffering traumatic cardiac arrest, Rich Gardiner, spokesman for Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association, said. Greenhow was later pronounced dead by hospital staff, according to state police.

Neither the teenage driver nor his passengers were injured in the crash.

The eastbound lanes of Route 22 leading up to the intersection were closed to traffic as a result of the crash and traffic was being detoured onto Econ Drive. The road was reopened to traffic around 4 p.m.

It was the second crash involving a motorcycle to take place in Harford County Friday. The first took place at Route 155 and Paradise Road in Havre de Grace after noon, Gardiner said.

The accident remained under investiagion as of Friday night.

I think the patch was a good idea..was being the correct word....how sad is it when someone gets killed in harford everyone thinks they have important crap to say...a life was lost..someone lost a son, husband, father...why does the how matter??? I truly hate when someone asks how my son died..does the reason change it...the how will never matter....Only I ask why him he was only 20 life was yet to be lived by him...so please shut up how does not matter...someone is truly hurting over this loss of life!!

They have sooooo many accidents at this intersection. I think it would be interesting to look at the statistics on this intersection. I live nearby and I can't begin to tell you the number of accidents that I have seen.

Unfortunately most times when they cancel the call for the copter the patient has died.....Hopefully not in this case. But it looks like it was one of those "fast" motorcycles

Yes, and it also looks like the car cut across in front of the motorcycle, which means he was wrong no matter what. There could also be some contributory negligence on the cyclist's part based on how "fast" he was moving on his "fast" motorcyle. In any event, the cut was in the wrong.

The intersection is not the problem, texting, inattention, being high, going too fast, and the "me first" attitude that everyone seems to have these days are the culprits.

I don't text and I pay attention when I drive. The intersection IS the problem. It is a very dangerous area. There are terrible sight lines pulling in and out of the Wa Wa's. I have called SHA on numerous occassions and asked that they limit left turn access in and out of that entrance. SHA doesn't think there seems to be a problem. It is a dangerous intersection , PERIOD!

I think they need to expand the median and make that a NO LEFT TURN out of Wawa - TOO MANY accidents there! I also think they need to remove that right lane that ends up merging to the left right after crossing over Route 543. Too many people get into that right lane to beat the backup going towards the College and all they do is cause a bigger backup when they cross over Route 543 because they have to merge back to the left.

It is a terrible intersection. I should know I was involved in an accident there years ago when traffic stopped to let someone make a left into the Wawa. Unfortunately someone came flying up the lane that starts right before the Wawa. They collided at a high speed and the lady making the left was thrown into my car. If I had not been in my SUV my kids and I would have been in trouble. 12,000 dollars of damage to my brand new truck. Luckily no injuries. They really need to do something about it!

My condolences to the motorcyclist family! I feel for the 17 yr old boy too, he will have to live with this tragic event.
Wawa is in a bad, high traffic spot. Trying to turn left into Wawa/Expresscare is difficult and a lot if time hard to see traffic in the right lane. That intersection and surrounding area needs attention, way too many accidents.

Thank you for saying that. People seem to forget that he had a family. While they constantly debate over if he was going to fast or not. Among other things. My brother was a very cautious driver, more important he was greatly loved by many. And a great man to know. I miss him. I just want to thank you for remembering GOD first and saying a prayer for him and my family. GOD bless you always.

Not only is that intersection a tricky one, I wish everyone on the road would be more courteous in general. As a driver that regularly travels to Bel Air and around Harford and Baltimore county, I cannot tell you how many accidents I have avoided due to defensive driving when someone else on the road was acting recklessly. SLOW DOWN, people and stop thinking only of yourself on the road!!! We all deserve more respect than that!

This intersection is a menace. I dread going through it at anytime, It is unsafe to make a left turn into the Wawa and the medical clinic during rush hour. My heart goes out to the motorcyclist who passed away and the young man who was driving the car. An accident an unforeseen and unplanned event or circumstance . Regardless of who was at fault, the end result cannot be changed. At some point, maybe the highway planners will recognize the need to improve the traffic patterns and make the necessary changes to reduce the number of motor vehicle collisions in the area.

That intersection is DEFINITELY the problem! I have said for years that there should be NO LEFT TURNS IN OR OUT OF THAT WAWA! Why won't the state highway idiots do something about it?? I have told my own children (new drivers)NEVER to turn left into or out of there! The real problem is when the "do-gooders" try to stop and motion for the left-turner to go on through, not caring that a ca/motorcycle may be speeding up the right lane at that moment. The person who waved the 17-year old boy to go on through is equally at fault! Save your do-good moments for the sick and homeless, not for people trying to turn into a store!

You don't have to have someone who is 21 in the car on a provisional license, only when you're on a drivers permit. A provisional license simply has the restrictions that you can't have anyone that isn't family under a certain age and that you can't be driving past midnight.

FFdave

Why does it matter if the driver had his provisional drivers license? That doesn't make him a better or worse driver than anyone else out there. A poor man lost his life and I love how people on here pick apart and speculate how this happen. If you weren't there don't assume.

I saw the whole accident, I was right behind Mr Greenhow. I was also one of the first responders who took MrGreehow's pulse and helped preform CPR until the paramedics came. This accident wasn't Mr Greenhow's fault. His right of way was taken away from him by an inexperienced 17 yr old driver who also had other teens in his vehicle at the time of the accident. My heart goes out to the Greenhow family. Such a terrible accident. Heidi H.

You really gonna stick with the hocus pocus; now you see it now you don't, motorcycles are invisible crap? Not only do you see bikes if you're paying attention; you freakin' hear them. Conscientious drivers don't hit motorcycles...poor drivers, inattentive drivers, aggressive drivers and imbeciles hit motorcycles; but they hit other cars too - it's just that when you hit a motorcycle it more often results in a fatality or serious injury.

The only idiocy shown here is you. I surely didn't suggest you rely on hearing a motorcycle as a means of identifying if there is one and locating it ignoring all other safety criteria that ought to be used to judge if it's safe to change lanes. Motorcycles are at fault 2/3's of the time. Wanna link where you get those facts and then explain how the f that has anything to do with what happened here? I'm hear to tell you that this wasn't a 25 year old rider on a crotch rocket. That demographic is quite different and you know it. This inexperienced driver in a car full of teens cut off a motorcycle because he was distracted and wasn't being careful enough. You are correct that this guy must have been invisible though...everybody is invisible when you don't freakin' look.

I drove past the scene friday afternoon and it was the cars fault. Anyone who knows that intersection knows that the light at 543 and 22 backs up and everyone sits in the one lane because the right lane ends right past royal farms. So the car went in the break of the lane. But the people do go into the right lane to turn at 22. The car went through the line like nothing was happening the motorcycle came up in the right lane and hit the car. I also am a new motorcycle owner myself and live right by CMW High. I feel for the rider because it wasn't his fault. Condolences to the family

Bob

12:55 pm on Monday, September 17, 2012

It is absolutely ridiculous how many people on here want to turn this into a motorcycle discussion or a young driver discussion. The real issue is with the intersection of Rt-22 and the driveway. It is inherantly dangerous. It has horrendous sight lines, is an overloaded intersection and it is next to a failing intersection (Rt 543/22). There should be no left turns in or out of that driveway and then the problem forever is solved, PERIOD!

While legally it is the young mans fault, it is an "accident" based mainly on a bad traffic design that led to a faulty turn by the driver and I have no doubt some contribuatory negligence by the biker. The sad thing is that this was all preventable. I know I have called the State on numerous occasions and asked them to perform a traffic study regarding all of the accidents that happen on a daily basis at that intersection between Econ and Rt 543. .

Bob try some decaf. You answered the questions yourself. I am not blaming anyone. Yes it was due to lack of sight line as you said. It is impossible to see the right lane when you are in that situation. I drove past the scene and actually talked to the people up the hill at the starbucks that watched it occur and were telling everyone what happened. And all accidents are preventable....hence the word accident.

That's such BS. A poorly designed intersection might be a good reason to modify your driving and be additionally cautious. If you don't have good vision forward and knowledge that it's safe to turn out or switch lanes you don't do it. Contributary negligence of the motorcyclist is pure unadulterated BS on your part - you have no idea what the circumstance was. The only things we know are the incident was initiated by the driver of the car and resulted in the death to another driver and that's all we know. To suggest this guy on the bike contributed to his death is an insult to his next of kin. Stick it.

First off, there is no such thing as an accident. Bad decisions lead to bad results. Your great guy buddy was in too much of a hurry to wait until the lanes were clear to go hang out at the wa wa. I hope they charge him with vehicular manslaughter. I live near there and regardless of the road design, if you can't be 100% sure the road is clear. Wait

You know when they had a problem with head-ons on the Bypass, they spent millions fixing the road because they knew it was a dangerous design. How many accidents have there been since the fix -ZERO. People need to put their energy into fixing the problem. But that requires work.

I am in and out of that Wawa several times per week. Yep, the sight lines are not good, but, so what? If I can not see what is coming because of a line of traffic, I don't guess, I wait for the line to clear. There are many, many instances while driving where we need to wait for a line of traffic to clear before proceeding, this is just one of them.
Prayers to the family.

For the record it was not my brother's fault. Known fact: He had the right of way and was cut off. Nor was he speeding or in the fast lane. He was in the slow lane. By law, his being cut off, makes it the kid who was driving fault. Hopefully you know that by now. Though it won't change the fact that my brother is GONE. For someone who agreed there should be no judging. How is it that you felt it was okay to pass judgement on my brother. Who you didn't know, nor where you there when he was killed.
