Serious Accident in Fallston Injures 2

A Kingsville teen was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after a three-car crash in Fallston Sunday evening.

A Kingsville teenager was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and another driver was taken to a Baltimore hospital by ambulance after a serious crash in Fallston Sunday evening, police said.

Shortly before 6:37 p.m. Sunday, Callie Jo Davidson, 28, of Abingdon, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox south on MD Route 152, according to a release from Maryland State Police with the Bel Air Barrack.

Police said Davidson allegedly ran a red light at the intersection with U.S. Route 1 and hit a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Katelyn Rae Mitchell, 17, of Kingsville.

The Trailblazer was northbound on U.S. Route 1 with a green light at the time of the crash.

Police said that the Equinox hit the Trailblazer on the front left of the driver's compartment, and witnesses said that on impact, the Trailblazer spun and hit a 1999 Ford Truck.

During the crash, Mitchell was ejected from the Trailblazer, according to police. She was flown by Medevac helicopter to Shock Trauma where she was listed in critical but stable condition Sunday night.

Davidson was taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore where she was listed in stable condition Sunday night.

The driver of the Ford, Anthony Steinacker, 25, of Halethorpe, was not injured in the crash although his truck sustained significant damage, police said.

The roadway was closed for several hours while reconstruction personnel from the Bel Air Barrack investigated.

Even odds, 50/50.

If we all had a nickel for everyone we saw on a cell phone - handheld to ear or texting - while the vehicle was in motion we'd have a free lunch every week.

Agreed. Cell phone use is out of control. Don't know if that's what happened here, but in any case they need to start cracking down on cell phone use while driving. I like the idea of a "three strike" rule with it. Busted three times on the phone = lose your license. Cause an accident while on the phone = lose your license. If they actually enforced something like that I'd bet cell phone use would cut down dramatically.

All that said, I hope everyone involved in this is okay. Especially that young girl who got hurt.

While cell phones are a problem and MAY have caused this accident, I don't think people should be jumping so quick. Maybe wait for more details... People could be talking about a 17 year not wearing a seat belt instead...

Apparently we're supposed to tip toe around and never, never say anything harsh or suggest any level of irresponsibility even when somebody nearly kills someone else. Yes, cell phone use is out of control - the law seems to have done almost nothing to curtail it. I heard a couple days ago that cell phones are responbible for nearly 30% of all accidents and those are the documented accidents - the rest of them where they quickly throw the phone back in the purse and lie about it after they rear end somebody probably aren't part of the statistics.

John: It really doesn't matter - does it?

Cell phone misuse causes tons of accidents. If it's not this one - it's irrelevant. No one claims to be omnisicent here and know what causes every specific event.

I do sincerely hope she makes a full and quick recovery, and if she's at fault by any means, learns a lesson.

Seriously, Maryland drivers are terrible enough as it is, sans illegal cell phone use.

I didn't even hear that a cell phone was involved & everyone is ready to jump to conclusions & I also agree with John that a " Seatbelt" ..may have helped...even though the accident should not have happened in the 1st place ! On another note...start taking notice of how many police officers in Harford Co that you might pass that has a phone to there ear & when you see that you should be getting there TAG # & calling in to report them !!!!

Not wearing a seat belt (even if ) did not cause, someone to run (as witnesses stated) a solid red light. The person who ran it will most likely have more excuses. But she caused a young girls life to be changed for ever. That is the fact and she will need to be held accountable for that, but the fullest extent of the law.

There are distractions other than cell phones people. Stop using every accident story to broadcast your disapproval of drivers that use cell phones. I bet if the driver had a medical emergency while driving there would still be ignorant post about the cause being a cell phone. Concentrate on the well being of both the victims. Accidents happen.

Wanna bet this had nothing to do with a medical emergency - it nearly never does. Somebody behind the wheel and in particular approaching a busy intersection who is distracted by anything or continues to text or talk, monkey with a radio or otherwise be an idiot shouldn't be driving.

Of course we don't know the cause of this accident and thoughts and prayers are with the injured, but there are so many poor drivers out there.
I was driving thru Perry Hall in front of Safeway, heading north in the left turning lane preparing to make a left, when a jacked up pickup truck flew past me in the turn lane.
I had to abort my turn in order not to be slammed by the truck. The truck merged back into the proper driving lanes and the went thru a red light at Honeygo and Belair Rd. Absolute disreguard for the safety of others. Wake up folks!

This isn't rocket science. You run a red light it's your fault. There are only three colors to chose from - red means stop, green means go and freakin' yellow means proceed only if stopping isn't safe or wise. Could care less if the victim here was wearing a seat belt or not; although sure is a wake up call to those that get lazy about that. This isn't a no-fault world where it's acceptable to stumble around, ignorant and unaware particularly where the operation of a vehicle is concerned. Sorry doesn't cut it when you nearly kill somebody - she ought to at minimum lose her license for a very long time, but also lose her house, her kids, her job...she nearly killed somebody and this young girl who was obeying traffic signals will never been the same for the rest of her life.

Police report states and on scene witnesses report not a yellow light...steady red vs. steady yellow. The moron went through a red light. No other possibilities. Being 28 the chances she had a medical emergency are near zero. She needs to rest up because crap is going to hit the fan and she deserves it and more. Negligence can rise to nearly the same level of being deliberate and this clearly is 100% her fault.

What name calling? Nobody called anybody a name...moron applies however. Let's put accidental in perspective - you can accidentally spill something, forget someone's birthday or mail in your car payment..too accidentally run a red light means you might kill someone therefore driving requires additional attentiveness because of the opportunity for causing grave harm. Quit making excuses..she didn't spill hot coffee on someone she freakin ran into the side of an innocent person's vehicle probably maiming her for life; no excuse. She's a moron.

We can all go back and fourth about what the cause was. And all I can say is unless the girl who ran the red light had a medical condition at that moment then SHE WAS NOT PAYING ATTENTION. Phone, radio, looking in the mirror, eating, what ever the reason, her eyes were not focused on what she should have been focused on. I see this crap every single day and sick of it personally. And now new cars are coming out with even more crap for people to play with while driving. Sometimes the gadgets are more distracting than a cell phone.

Wow, there are quite a few opinions in here. I simply said that people should not jump to conclusions about cell phone use and that if the victim was wearing her seatbelt, this may not even be a story. While according to the police report, it was no doubt the 28 year olds fault; the accident would not have been as bad if the 17 year old was not thrown from her vehicle. For anyone to be thrown from a vehicle these days, they almost certainly were not wearing a seatbelt. It’s not victimizing the victim; it’s simply saying that the victim most likely was not wearing her seatbelt. And for the people who think there should be more laws about cell phone use, I would bet you’ve broken them before because very few people put their cell phones away when they get in their cars.

There was actually a study done saying that cell phone laws didn’t lower accident rates because people are hiding the phones instead of holding them up where they can see them and some of the road at the same time. However, there are so many other things to harp on besides cell phones, it’s not even funny. Real laws regulating distracted driving should be put in place, not laws just going after a small portion like cell phones. How about people putting on makeup like I see every morning driving to work? How about eating while driving? How about pets on peoples’ laps? How about people driving around in la-la land doing 15mph under the speed limit which isn’t illegal, but is very dangerous to cars around them? This country should implement driver training like what is done in other countries. Driver TRAINING, not just some stupid tests. I’ve actually instructed defensive driving classes for 16-21 year olds and have taking many driving training classes myself. It’s very hard for me to drive on the road seeing what I see and knowing what I know. If you have a 16-21 year old in your household, you should look at http://streetsurvival.org/ because it’s well worth it for the kids.

John if you teach defensive driving to teenagers you've lost all credibility defending cell phone use in a moving vehicle. Kids are more likely to both be injured and cause injury and certainly more likely to be on a cell phone or texting - not such a great combination of factors. If you could send a link to any valid study (one not done by a cell phone manufacturer), that would suggest reduced cell phone use in vehicles doesn't lower accident rates then you might have something to talk about. There's a big difference between reduction in use and implementation of a law; because obviously if the law isn't being enforced you don't have reduced use and therefore no reduction in accidents. How about we toughen the laws to to correlate the risk and the propensity of the problem? I don't think Ashley's three strikes lose your license suggestion isn't so far off the mark. Statistically texting while driving is as dangerous as drunk driving and we don't hesitate to take the license of people who chronically drink and drive.

Karl, please re-read what I wrote. I never defended cell phone use and never would. I said that people were jumping to conclusions about the cause of the accident and I also said that cell phone laws haven’t worked as intended and why. And as far as the instruction I’ve done, one of the ways to show how cell phone use is bad to is to make drivers drive through a slalom and then do it again while holding a phone to their ear or texting. Now before you jump to conclusions on that, it was on a closed course in a safe manner. If you really want statistical information on the subject of cell phone bans or laws, a simple search using your favorite Internet search engine would work well for you.

No harm, no foul...it surely did seem like you were defending the cell phone thing, but no matter. I am aware of slaloms - think The Fed or State Highway Admin has apparatus that they send out to schools; certainly worthwhile but again, the problem is so much bigger and deeper than just the schools. After all this lady is 28 and apparently didn't realize she was running a red light in a huge very busy intersection. I find that so hard to fathom...how do you not see that. I'd grant you running a stop sign, perhaps a much smaller intersection is even a possibility. Can't imagine; nearly incomprehensible the level in inattentiveness necessary for that to happen - do you want to share the road with someone like that?

I think if you're caught texting while driving you ought to have your license at least temporarily suspended. You cause an accident like this woman you should be required back into drivers training, jail time, plus restitution before given the ability to drive again. Driving is a privilege, not a right...abuse the privilege, lose your license.

Enforcement of the cell phone laws are difficult. Talking is a secondary violation (meaning you can't be stopped for that alone) and texting is almost impossible to prove. The courts are dropping cases left and right. Hopefully the talking law will become a primary offense this October. Best wishes to those involved in the crash.

I understand Dirt; folks also understand the limited ability to enforce it thus we have everyone, or at least most everyone continuing as if there were no law. That exactly why the statistic that 30% of accidents are because of some distractive technology in the car...doesn't count because those that lie..throw the phone quickly in the purse and pretend they weren't on the phone. Primary offense..we all know that needs to happen; so if statistically texting and talking is as dangerous as drunk driving enforcement should follow. Ever tried watching a movie and driving..I defy anyone to suggest talking to someone even hands free is not just as distractive as to try to watch a movie while driving. Nobody needs a television in thier car either.

The young lady could have had a heart attack, seizure or a number of medical conditions, could have spilled coffee or dropped a cigarette on her lap, could have been distracted for a split second for any number of reasons, and on and on and on.
Yet almost everyone here has convinced themselves the accident was caused by talking on a cell phone. Mind numbing!
