Blind Bel Air Man Murdered
A man was stabbed to death Friday night in a Redfield Road residence.
UPDATE (Saturday, 2:08 p.m.)—A 29-year-old blind man was stabbed to death Friday in Bel Air in an attempted burglary gone wrong, according to a spokeswoman for the Harford County Sheriff's Office.
For instant updates follow Bel Air Patch on Facebook and Twitter.
Police arrested 17-year-old Donnell Graham after tracking him down at his apartment with a K-9 unit, Monica Worrell said. A witness told Patch the suspect stabbed Patrick Xavier Ward four times in the chest.
Patrick Xavier Ward, who is legally blind, lived in the 900 block of Redfield Road where he was stabbed around 8:50 p.m. He previously lived in Pylesville, according to court records.
"Detectives have determined that the suspect, Graham, had attempted to burglarize the victims’ home, when he was unexpectedly confronted by the victim and stabbed him multiple times," a release from Worrell said.
The witness told Patch that Ward had a gun, which was sought by the suspect. When Ward refused to give up the gun, the suspect stabbed him.
The suspect fled the scene and was arrested by police a few blocks away on Fairwood Road. At least eight sheriff's deputy vehicles were in front of the Greenbrier residence, which is off of Maryland Route 22 near the intersection of Greenbrier Drive, at about 9:15 p.m.
Neighbors called 911 after they noticed the altercation.
"Two witnesses heard screaming coming from an apartment," Worrell said Friday night. "They were able to get into the home and saw the victim and suspect."
The front door of the apartment was locked and the neighbors entered through Ward's balcony.
Ward was transported by the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

It is clear you do not know what the word "sought" means, as it is described above. He took the gun from the suspect, as anyone would if their life were in danger. Read before you decide to post your comments. Pat was a great person. No one needs your input.

mark, your statement makes no sense. I'm very sorry to see that he lost his life, but the article reads that he had a gun, the (alleged) murderer wanted it (the "sought" portion of the story, meaning 'desired to obtain') and he wouldn't give it up, so the (alleged) murderer stabbed him to death. While I in no way blame the victim, I still do not like the idea of someone legally blind possessing a firearm.
And no one 'needs' anyone's input, but unless this is a page specifically for condolences, it is entirely appropriate to respectfully discuss the crime as described in the article.

Until you know the person and what really went on.... you should not jump to conclusions.... Blind people have just as many rights as the rest of us, and i am sorry but most people that are not blind should not possess a gun or any other type of weapon for that matter. Pat was the best person I ever met he would do anything for anyone and did not deserve to have this happen to him.

I'm with you Steve, people want to point the finger and blame before they have the facts, or blame management. What in the hell does management have to do with it...trust me you have to have almost perfect credit and no criminal record to get in there, how can mgmt be responsible for others actions.

FYI this dump of a complex takes anyone on section 8. I moved out because of it. I owned my townhouse around the corner and thier practices have turned it into a ghetto. It's as bad as Edgewood now. It's not thier fault this POS waste of life did this. It's only an FYI. It's not hard to get in at all. They accept anyone. The scum of society lives in this place. And they DO NOT check for criminal records. If they did the would have 90% vacancy.

I'm really beginning to hate this neighborhood. Been here for 10 years and three cops and detectives are still here at the intersection of Redfield and Fairwood. I had a total view of the aftermath.

I have deleted a comment from Steve, which violated our terms of use by attacking another person. http://belair.patch.com/terms Disagreeing with other commenters is fine, but please do so in a respectful manner. Cussing at each other will not be tolerated. Also keep in perspective that a life was lost and being hostile is not going to help this tragic situation. I think out of respect these comments all need to be deleted for the respect of the respect of the family they need time to heal and all these terrible things aren't what they need to see. Only positive things need to be posted, I understand it is to be a place you can put your thoughts but now is not the time for this, pat was an amazing person and had the biggest heart and he didnt deserve this no matter what!

Wow, I am at a loss for words. People can be so cruel. This is someones family member. Finger pointing is not cool. With that said, I lived there as a child and it makes me sad to hear of this happening there or anywhere in my hometown for that matter.

How can you guys make senseless comments on here. Yes he was blind but he didnt deserve this childish talk. He was a wonderful guy that will we all miss so much. He could brighten your day when you thought all hope was lost. He had an outlook on life that I only wish many people had. He was the nicest, smartest person you could meet. He overcame so much and was such a great person. Just because he was blind you guys feel he doesnt have the right to protect himself? Only if you guys knew how someone who is blind can do anything someone seeing can do. Take time and think before you say stupid comments. He showed me that I can overcome anything with perserverence and determination. Justice will be served, mark my words.

Its bad parenting, and the fact that insane partying was going on with the 2 women that lived below him. They should go to jail as well. I wouldn't want anything to do with a kid that would murder a blind guy. Pure evil needs to be eradicated! Pat was a great guy and did not deserve this. He got it just for associating with neighbors. If anyone knows anything about disabilities, then you would know that reliance on peers and neighbors is necessary. He trusted his neighbor downstairs and he gets the ones boyfriend breaking in and murdering him. Unbelievable. What a great loss. He was overcoming his disabilites and almost through college to improve himself dispite his shortcomings. This coward ended his life. I urge everyone to take whatever legal steps necessary to see that Justice is served.
Pat also needed some form of self defense. In the end he didnt even want to use it to hurt someone that ended up murdering him. Disabled people do have the right to bare arms for defense.

Most message boards are going on about race and stuff.I personally think this act transcends all of these petty agendas. This is pure evil. Like I stated on the other boards, even the most raw form of street justice would deem this act incomprehensible. You do not prey on the disabled or weak who have a distinct disadvantage in defending themselves. No group would condone that. Not even prisoners. I personally would like the press to find out why it took 45 minutes for a paramedic to arrive according to witnesses?

Also they let a key person go. His name is David Bunner. A 58 year old Vietnam Vet from Florida. He is associated with the 2 women and the perpetrator. Pat called me about this guy a couple weeks ago, because he was making violent comments throughout the building. I told Pat to talk to the police about him, and he called me back and said he did, however the police did not acknowledge him that much. If this guy Dave got wind of it, then Pat may have been the victim of the manipulation of the 17 year old. Much like the DC sniper case. Rumors that this Dave Bunner guy was running a minor prostitution ring with these 2 women as well out of this apartment. These women are mentally slow and on disability, so easily manipulated. The police have repeatedly ignored the chaos that this Dave Bunner is spreading through this building. I personally would hope that the press and police would investigate this aspect. It may be too late. This guy high tailed it out of that area, so I have heard.

Apparently the weak and helpless are EXACTLY what certain people prey upon nowadays. Women, children, blind, old, disabled, sick, homeless. It doesn't matter one bit. Life means NOTHING to those who have no morals, no UPBRINGING and no souls. God speed Pat. You escaped this cruel sick world of violent mutant zombies.

Great Guy and I hope everyone of you that thinks he is great does one selfless act to ensure justice is done for the man. If its as many of you as I think, the community will never be able to ignore our cries for Justice. The wrong man was killed. I dont plan to just let this happen on my watch... How bout you!

Romans 2:1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.
What the boy did was deplorable, uncontestable, but done. Which of you will wield the knife, tighten the rope, poke out his eyes? Who among you will punish him. You are all cowards, you would never do it. You hide your shame behind locked doors, waiting for someone to make it right, and if you did serve justice you would be no better than Donnell. Leave the dispensing of justice to those that we have elected, and Donnell's soul and crimes to be judged by GOD!

It says the victim was legally blind, which means he had some vision, hopefully enough to aim correctly. He also has a right to defend himself but either way, he's dead, the killer is not. The killer should get the death penalty.

No he was completly blind he could not see anything. But his other senses were good enough that he could have defended himself but in the end he could not take another life. He died for this other kid to live
