Two Prospect Road Crash Survivors in Critical Condition
Theresa Owensby and David Clark are at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
Two people remain in critical condition after a single-vehicle crash in northern Harford County that killed three over the weekend.
Theresa Owensby, 19, of Bel Air and David Clark, 21, of Street are at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where a spokeswoman said they were listed in critical condition Monday.
Five people were in the 2008 Mazda 3 that went off road on MD Route 646 near Mill Green Road at approximately 11:29 p.m. Saturday, according to police.
"Investigators believe the vehicle turned sideways, went up onto the top of a guardrail and became airborne," Greg Shipley, spokesman for the Maryland State Police, said Monday. "Then it struck several small trees before...it struck the large tree, and that’s when it came apart; the rear [of the car] remained in the tree."
Police said that the other half of the vehicle was found in a ravine.
Three people were ejected from the vehicle, Shipley said, and pronounced dead at the scene: Tyler Anderson, 21, of Jarrettsville, who was driving; Shawn Ponton, 21, of Jarrettsville; and Alexzandria McDowell, 20, of Street.
The two survivors were sitting in the back seat, said Shipley, who noted it was unclear where the other two passengers had been before they were ejected.
Owensby and Clark were taken by helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. As of Monday, their condition is "critical," which the American Hospital Association defines as meaning vital signs are unstable, the patients may be unconscious and indicators are not favorable.
At the time of the crash, the group of five friends—including North Harford High School sweethearts McDowell and Clark—was on the way to Anderson's home, according to WBAL-TV. The TV station reported that friends of the victims brought candles, flowers and wreaths to the crash site as of Sunday evening.
Maryland State Police is handling the investigation, which is continuing. The speed the vehicle was traveling was not known as of Monday.
"We have not determined the cause of the crash," Shipley said. "These detailed crash investigations can take weeks or even months sometimes. Our crash team works up all of their data and analyzes evidence from the scene and the vehicle, so it may take some time."
Added Shipley: "Nothing has been ruled out."
This is the 11th fatal crash in Harford County on state roads this year, according to Maryland State Police. In those 11 crashes, police said 16 people have died.
