Accomplishment: Engaging in an in-depth bird study project

Key to awesomeness: Mrs. Gasper’s second-graders are learning to be ornithologists as they conduct a bird study project.  The students have set up a bird feeding station outside their classroom and are monitoring the visits of their feathered friends. They are following the nesting habits of a bald eagle in West Virginia, a barn owl in California, an Allen hummingbird in California, a peregrine falcon in Harrisburg, an osprey in Cambridge and a red-tailed hawk in Philadelphia through “nest cams” on the Internet.  They are observing birds at home, taking pictures, and creating a birding scrap book of information. Students are learning to use field guides and are creating posters of a variety of birds to display in the hallway. Mrs. Gasper has set up an Edublog site where all the students can share information about the birds they spot. These students give a whole new meaning to being “Bird Brained”!
