Rawlings-Blake, McDonough Have Different 'Dreams'

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake appearing this week in a commercial in support of a law that would grant in-state tuition rates to some illegal immigrants is drawing criticism from Del. Pat McDonough.

Rawlings-Blake appears in the nearly one-minute commercial urging voters to do what's "right and fair."

"To do nothing is to look a child in the eye and destroy their possibilities," the mayor says in the commercial.

McDonough, a Middle River Republican, said Rawlings-Blake's appeal to voters comes at the expense of other students.

"I think what she's doing is destroying the dreams of young, black city kids," McDonough said. "Maybe it's someone who might be the first person in their family to go to college until they apply and find out that the position is filled by someone who is here illegally."

The kerfuffle over the commercial is round three in an on-going flap between McDonough and Rawlings-Blake.

McDonough has twice criticized the mayor for issues related to what he called "black youth mobs" that he said were causing problems in the Inner Harbor area

Rawlings-Blake has refused to directly respond to McDonough but in an interview with a local radio station, the mayor referred to McDonough and Sen. Jim Brochin, a Towson Democrat, as "haters' and "hecklers."

In May, Rawlings-Blake criticized McDonough directly for his support of the so-called "Doomsday state budget."

McDonough said he expects his comments will draw more of the same.

"I'm fighting for the black community," McDonough said. "This will stimulate debate. This will get people talking. This will make the heads of the editors at The [Baltimore] Sun explode. I will be called a racist. Danny Rodricks will write another story that no one will understand."

Today's Washington Post had a good article featuring Mayor Rawlings-Blake and her efforts to increase our population (in the City) by attracting immigrants. I think that is fantastic. Mexican and South American immigrants are bringing Highlandtown back to the glory days of old. I wish Southwest Baltimore would see more immigrants. Keep fighting, Mayor, keep fighting.

Sean, I'm working on a similar blog and the impact on Baltimore County and SS's and a 500% increase in one area is not conducive to the glory days.

The poverty rates in our country are some of the highest in our nations history.

Propaganda is one thing, facts are something else.

Who do you think is going to feed, educate and tend to their medical needs?

Look at the financial figures in the city.

Buzz: Pretty much. The last thing the city needs is more blight. The country is bankrupt and that means less money for the States...and subsequently less money for their cities and counties.

Where's this money going to come from?

If we spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year at the border crossings asking each person coming through for ID and their papers, how far inland do they need to go before they get a pass on showing the exact same ID? 20 miles? 200 miles?

And why do you fail to make the distinction between ILLEGAL and LEGAL immigrants?

I think teaching a kid it's okay to break the law in the first place by being here unregistered and not paying taxes is worse than "to do nothing is to look a child in the eye and destroy their possibilities."

The major problem is that illegal immigrants can collect welfare for all their children born in the US. "Households with children with the highest welfare use rates are those headed by immigrants from the Dominican Republic (82 percent), Mexico and Guatemala (75 percent), and Ecuador (70 percent)." from the Center of Immigration Studies. 75% and 82%!!

Not JUST the full refund but the EIC which is OUR money!

You're making a different argument now. If it's your position that only people that end up owing federal taxes may receive in state tuition, then you should lobby for that.

Further, that quote says nothing about illegal immigrants, it just says immigrants. Illegal immigrants are ineligible for welfare benefits.

able, "The Treasury Department says that in the 2010 filing year more than $4 billion in child credit payments went to 2.3 million people who filed tax returns but didn't have Social Security numbers proving they were citizens or legal workers. That's a four-fold increase over five years earlier. "

As long as they pay taxes and stop sucking off our wallets, I'm fine with that. Entitlements are killing us with LEGAL citizens. We don't need any more people living here on the backs of others.

It seems McDonough just wants attention. He doesn't get enough from his own county that he has to grab it by talking about areas that he doesn't represent.

Well the thing is, he's got to get attention because the uneducated population of today only understands lower intellectual concepts.

I completely take McDonough at his word - if you think of it objectively, he IS fighting for the black community. The black community that, on the whole, are hard working/law abiding citizens and no different then anyone else.

Do you, as a caucasian, take great pride if a group of 30 teens - mostly caucasian - go and flash rob a store, or harass others downtown?

I think not.

So why would anyone pre-suppose this applies any differently to any other group of equal human beings?

Just because you talk about a subgroup of people, every village idiot gets out the flamethrower and instantly pulls out the racist card. In some cases, it's warranted. Other occasions, it's really not.
McDonough's original comments were factually accurate. They still are.
However, the ability for the gen pop in this country to discern the difference between legitimate racism and not is quite pathetic. It's much easier to just spew hate - and this applies to both sides equally.

Tim, the county is playing games as they always do with facts that tell the truth. The only way to get a straight answer is to file a PIA and even then they still play games. That is why I sued the county. Transparency is not one of their finer points.

I'm looking at the cost of SS's and the increases over the years. It is beyond belief. If the city thinks this type of growth is good then they will have to pay the piper. $$ don't lie!

Illegal or legal. I like them in Baltimore City. They move to live in areas of the city that no one from Harford County would walk, much less send their kids to school. They are a motivated, hard working force that this country, state and cities should be proud of to have. Has anyone read the Washington Post article? It’s very favorable. Has anyone been to Highlandtown lately? They've made it into a thriving commercial/residential district. Plus, they're entrepreneurs... there is new Latino restaurant popping up on every corner. If you want a great burrito, head for Highlandtown.

Mayor Rawlings-Blake can't get citizens to move into the city, they're leaving in mass. So, I guess this is the only way to boost the city's population. Encourage immigrants both legal and illegal and tie the hands of the BCPD so they cannot ask about ones legal status. Why fix the problem? That takes guts Just except more Illegals and say how well Balto.City is growing. More of the same crap is fed to us and we accept it.

How is it a problem to the BCPD? How is immigration a problem? it provides a labor force that the area is serious in need of. Plus, more residents mean more tax revenue, and their money is good. What is happening in Highlandtown is a great American story, but all you and your conservative heathens want is to complain about "black oyuths". Get a life and move out of your mommy's basement. What exactly is being fed to you John? You're Mommy's dinner tonight?

The name calling. WOW! It's a problem if you want to attempt to go after people living here Illegally. I shouldn't have to explain it to someone as knowledgable as you, so I won't bother. The labor force that it provides is wonderful, unless your a legal citizen in need of a job. Hey lb, if its so good, then why not support it yourself. Why not open your home (just the basement) to a few Illegals, sorry, undocumented. If every liberal such as you , Steve and FIFA and the like, would open your homes to a few worthy ILLEGALS, then this the city would be an even better place. A real undocumented Utopia. WOW!

The population of Baltimore City has been decreasing since 1960. This is hardly a new problem. Without the undocumented immigrants the Social Security system would collapse. What would happen if the old geezers went to cash their SS checks and they bounced? They would change their tune really fast.

Once the illegals are in this country long enough and get amnesty from Obama then they all will get to collect social security! I'd much rather see the black community in Baltimore City get off the welfare and get jobs instead of attracting hordes of illegal immigrants to bankrupt our state.

John T.

If that's the case, then we justify allowing illegal immigration in order to solve population decline in Balto. City and the financial problems with Social Security. Why not have the government get into the illegal drug market (cocaine, marijuana) and become the largest illegal drug dealer in the world. In fact, the first job we can give to illegals is transporting our drugs. The government can given them a paycheck, taxes taken out of course, We can justify breaking the law because it's easier than solving our problems directly. I like this approach, ithas a lot of potential.

The accelerated rate that Maryland and this country is giving away our treasure and fracturing our innate culture to pander to political agendas will surely emaciate the withering fatted American cow until our society is mere semblance of the great nation it once was as we revert into a third world country.
All these arguments as to why we as a country should cater and accommodate to this behavior are weak, and while they nourish rhetorical good feelings for some, they are disease upon our nation and self interests.

We say we are a nation built upon a foundation of laws and principles but we choose to reward and encourage those who would flagrantly disregard and disrespect the same.
