President Obama's Speech/Prayer to Newtown, Connecticut and the Nation

What was President Obama's message to Newtown, Connecticut and the Nation last night?

I don’t usually praise any man, nor do I play politics much, thus, I can honestly say that President Obama’s Speech/Prayer last night was truly genuine. Many will say that his speech was a preface to more gun regulations and some will say that his prayer was just amazing, but both will be incorrect. What President Obama did last night wasn’t just a speech or just a prayer, it was his true attempt to be the leader of our nation. He literally wanted to use his office for good. It isn’t disingenuous to quote the Bible. It isn’t disingenuous to read the names of the beautiful children who lost their lives tragically. It truly was a speech/prayer that tried to comfort the nation, to reach beyond politics, and honestly bring up the subject of what we can or cannot do to try and protect our children from more gun violence.

There hasn’t been such a tragedy and such an example of evil that I’ve seen in my lifetime than what our nation saw last Friday. I would never think such a young man would be so capable of such a wicked crime, but indeed he was. My viewpoint is simple; our society glorifies murder: in the movies, in video games, in all the downright desensitizing entertainment. We invite people once in a great while, when all the world is falling around them and all of society has crushed them to just explode. Of course Adam Lanza is not a victim, he’s a murderer; but nonetheless, our society helped create him.

If you honestly ask yourself, what if that disturbed young man did not have lethal firearms and just a knife, or a bat, or whatever else, could he as easily have killed the innocent? Could he really have killed 6 adults before killing those many children? I sit here with tears in my eyes. The answer is dogmatically “NO!” It’s the truth, and I’m a 2nd amendment, card carrying Republican and true traditionalist. Our country was made free and freedom must be preserved. The 2nd amendment helps support that purpose for all the families across this great nation. But that young crazy man, would have never of killed his mother, those children and the adults who tried to stop him, without the weapons that were sold to him or his mother.

Even though in this current situation the conclusion could be “fewer guns equals less crime,” but across America that just doesn’t pan out. You take away guns from law abiding citizens in areas that are very rural or in highly populated metropolitan areas, and criminals will have no restraints other than the police who may be 5-10 minutes away in response time, if not more. Another interesting anecdote to think about is the one in human nature; the more you restrict somebody, the more that person may rebel. Social liberals say, let’s legalize marijuana and you’ll have less usage. Or likewise, when we tried to prohibit alcohol in our nation, look what happened. And can you imagine if they tried to outlaw sex other than to married couples? The point here is, more restrictions and regulations generally don’t support less of something; they just tempt more people to do it behind closed doors.

What President Obama tried to do last night, was to simply be a part of comforting all the victims of Newtown, Connecticut and beyond. But he will and he should attempt to lead the debate on what we can do as Americans’ to truly try and prevent these kinds of heinous acts from ever happening again. One will say, “More guns,” others will say, “Less guns,” but I’ll say, “Can we just put all the rhetoric and political hostilities aside and truly visit the subjects and areas that are of importance to us?” That’s all we ever want as Americans: honest and truthful debates. I hope President Obama will stay on this course and maybe his last 4 years will truly be better than the first in the most important role of the Presidency: Leadership.
