Fallston Teen Releases First Music Video

After successfully reaching fundraising goals, two full days of video shooting and months of editing, 18-year-old musician, Piper Bateman of Fallston, who has been performing music for 10 years, announces the release of her first music video, produced in collaboration with Baltimore-based filmmaker, Jane Hollon.

The singer-songwriter and filmmaker initiated an online pledge campaign in July to partially finance the music video for Bateman’s original song, “Finally a Refugee,” and reached their fundraising goal of $2,000, in time for the two-day video shoot this past August. They spent 13 hours on set both days, filming four scenes that include the barn at Edgeley Grove Farm, a bar scene at Pure Wine Cafe in Ellicott City, a wooded scene in Harford County, and various studio shots at Amy Jones Photography Studio in Abingdon, Md.

“Finally a Refugee” is not the typical sappy break up song. It tells the story of Bateman’s growth and independence in moving on after ending a long-term relationship. The video shows two different aspects of her experience, some sad and emotional and others strengthening and inspiring. Bateman says the wooded scene brings out the hardships of the break up, while the cornfield represents the phase moving on.

“This video is really the first big project I have done as a solo musician, and I am hoping it opens new doors of opportunity for both Jane and me,” says singer-songwriter, Piper Bateman.

A Fallston resident, Bateman is currently a freshman at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pa., studying communications with a minor in music. She plans to add a double major in music industry and build a career within the music business, whether it is performing or another endeavor. Bateman and video director, Jane Hollon hope the video will gain traction and boost their artistry awareness in both the music and film industry. They plan to send the video to film festivals, music producers and record companies.

“I was so excited to get the chance to work with Piper,” says director Jane Hollon. “I had been looking for an inspiring artist to collaborate with for a while, and I couldn’t have asked for anyone better. We had such a great time, and I’m very proud of the result.”

Bateman says her favorite part of filming is seeing the final product and learning how music videos are created first-hand. “No one knows what was going on in the background of the scenes,” says Bateman. “It was actually pouring down rain in the woods scene and someone is holding an umbrella over my head.”

“Overall, I learned so much and loved every second of it,” says Bateman. “This definitely won’t be the last time you hear about me.”

Bateman continues singing and songwriting in her spare time and hopes to have a new song finalized within the next few months. She will be auditioning for an on-campus a cappella group in the spring called “The City Belles.” She will be performing at the Riverside Pub and Grill in Bel Air, Md. on Nov. 16 from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m.
