Its a Free Family Purim Party - all are welcome

Its a Free Family Purim Party - all are welcome!

The Jewish holiday of Purim falls out on March 15-16 of this year. It is the most joyous holiday on the Jewish calendar. Purim is a holiday commemorating a victory over anti-Semitism. It began in ancient Persia, in the 4th century BCE. A wicked man named Haman tried to annihilate all the Jews. In a seemingly natural order of events, the King married a Jewish queen who saved her people.

In honor of Purim, Barnes and Noble will partner with Harford Chabad to offer a free "Purim Fun Day" Sunday March 16th Purim Day starting at 9:45 am in its Bel Air location (620 Marketplace Dr, Bel Air, MD 21014).  The event will unite children and their families from across the spectrum of the community in a joyous and interactive celebration of Purim. Magician and entertainer Michael Rosman will be in attendance and will be performing a show and juggling workshop. All are welcome, free of charge. Reservations are requested at www.HarfordChabad.org/PurimFun as some supplies are limited.  Parents must accompany their children.

As part of a global effort to bring the celebration of Jewish life into the public space, Harford Chabad joins thousands of Chabad centers across the globe in staging Purim celebrations. From Ukraine to China, England to Ecuador, Cambodia to California, it is anticipated that hundreds of thousands will experience the joy of Purim at Chabad organized festivities this year.

To relive the miraculous events of Purim, Jews worldwide celebrate by listening to the book of Esther (Megillah), giving to the needy (Matanot La’evyonim) [donate atwww.harfordchabad.org/donate and we will forward to individuals in need], sending food portions to friends (Mishloach Manot) and having a Purim feast (Mishteh Shel Purim). Many have the custom to dress up in a costume and eat Hamantashen - a triangle pastry with a sweet filling.

What is the holiday of Purim?

The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar. It begins this year after sundown on March 15th and ends at nightfall on March 16th. The holiday commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in Ancient Persia from Haman's plot "to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day." It is observed by public readings of the Megillah, or Scroll of Esther, to recount the story of the Purim miracle, sending food gifts to friends, giving gifts of money to the poor and enjoying a festive Purim meal.
