2-Minute Tornado Hit Abingdon, Bel Air

The National Weather Service reported the Aug. 13 tornado traveled one mile in Harford County.

The brief brush with extreme weather that Harford County experienced earlier this month was, in fact, a tornado, the National Weather Service reported this week.

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down between Bel Air and Abingdon on Tuesday, Aug. 13.

According to the weather service, the tornado hit between 6:01 and 6:02 a.m. and was on the ground for two minutes. Winds gusted up to 70 mph as the tornado traveled approximately 1 mile, the report stated.

Damage was limited to trees, stretching from southern Harford County to Havre de Grace.

One Havre de Grace Patch reader reported a tree across the tracks on Lewis Lane near the Weis.

The tree damage in Havre de Grace was caused by "straight-line thunderstorm downburst winds," the weather service reported. That means that winds were blowing down and out in a straight line; in a tornado, the winds blow in and up, according to the weather service.

This was the second tornado in one month for Harford County. On July 23, another tornado was confirmed that damaged a farm in Darlington.
