Sewage from APG's Edgewood Area Spilled into Bush River

Extreme rain caused the spill, according to Aberdeen Proving Ground.

The Harford County Health Department and the Maryland Department of the Environment were recently notified after hundreds of gallons of sewage spilled into the Bush River, Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) reported Thursday.

According to a press release from APG, "extreme rainfall" caused an estimated 250,000 gallons of partially treated sewage to bypass its intended tank and instead, flow into a chlorine chamber before dumping into the Bush River.

The release stated that 3.66 inches of rain fell in a 24-hour period earlier in the week, causing the overflow Tuesday evening.

Since then, APG said that signs were posted prohibiting fishing, crabbing, shellfish harvesting and swimming until further notice.

Experts from APG’s Edgewood area continue to monitor the affected area of the Bush River, according to APG's statement.
