German Exchange Program Stops in Bel Air

Students from Lenzinghausen, Germany received a lesson in small-town government on Friday.

As part of an exchange program with the  and a group of students from Lenzinghausen, Germany traveled to Bel Air for a lesson in local government. 

More than 20 German and American students gathered at on Friday. 

Bel Air Mayor led a discussion and explained the basics of small-town government.

"America is full of small towns like Bel Air," Carey said. 

Carey then answered questions from the group.

Lina Schmidtke, a German student in the exchange program, said the group traveled to New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and the District of Columbia. 

Her first time in the United States, Schmidtke said she enjoyed New York the most. 

Jeff Herget, organizer of the program, said the students will travel to larger cities in the U.S. for 10 days, in addition to stopping in places like Bel Air to learn how smaller towns are run. 

"It's way for students to learn about our culture and government," Herget said.
