Widespread Power Outage Struck Greater Bel Air

The outage impacted hundreds across Harford County, including the town of Bel Air.

Drivers were urged to be extremely careful Thursday night because power was out—including traffic lights—in several areas of Harford County, according to the Department of Emergency Services.

The cause was a BGE substation that was out of power, Harford County Fire & EMS reported.

A statement from the Harford County Department of Emergency Services said the following areas were impacted:

  • Town of Bel Air
  • MD Route 543 between Hickory and Wheel Road
  • Portions of MD Route 22/Churchville Road
The department said that the "major outage" was reported just before 5 p.m. and BGE was working to restore power as soon as possible.

As of 5:50 p.m. on Thursday, 28 customers were without power in Harford County, according to BGE's outage map, which showed 720 customers in Harford County had been without power at 5:30 p.m.

Traffic lights in the town of Bel Air and on state highways went out during the outage, according to the Department of Emergency Services, which reported that the State Highway Administration had been notified.

By law, drivers should treat intersections with nonfunctioning traffic signals as four-way stops.
