Maryland-Based 'House of Cards,' 'Veep' Snag Emmy Nominations

Two television series that film primarily in Maryland -- the Julia Louis-Dreyfus comedy HBO series “Veep” and the Netflix drama the “House of Cards” – snagged Emmy Award nominations Thursday.

The 66th prime-time Emmy Award nominations include three of the actors working in Maryland, according to an Associated Press story. “House of Cards” faces tough competition in the best-drama series category, although it made history last year as the first online series nominated for a major award.

The show stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright as Frank and Claire Underwood, playing roles as the vice president and his wife, in a series that started filming in Harford County in 2012 and returned in 2013 for its second season.

Spacey earned a nomination for best actor in a drama, along with four-time winner Bryan Cranston for "Breaking Bad." Castmate Wright landed a nomination as outstanding lead actress in a drama, along with last year's winner, "Homeland" star Claire Danes.

Work on the third season of “House of Cards” was pushed back to June after the show’s producers lobbied Maryland lawmakers to increase tax credits for film and television production in order to keep filming in the state.

''Veep" landed a nomination for best comedy show, and series star Louis-Dreyfus received a nod for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series.

Supporting actor and actress nominations went to "Veep's" Tony Hale and Anna Chlumsky, both of whom won Emmys last year, reports The Baltimore Sun.

Baltimore native Josh Charles, who left "The Good Wife" last season, was nominated as best supporting actor for his work on the show, the Sun says. His character, Will Gardner, was killed as he exited the series, shocking fans across the country.

The Emmy Awards will be announced Monday, Aug. 25, in a ceremony hosted by Seth Meyers airing live on NBC, according to CBS.
