Investigators with the Harford County Sheriff's Office believe the wound was self-inflicted and the investigation is ongoing, Hopkins said.

No one was with the man when the gun went off and no other injuries were reported, Hopkins said.

Fire and emergency medical personnel treated the injured man at the scene and transported him to a local hospital where he was in critical condition shortly before 4 p.m., according to a post by Gardiner to the official Harford Volunteer Fire and EMS Association Facebook page.

The man died at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air later Monday afternoon, according to Hopkins. Next of kin had not yet been notified as of 4:20 p.m., Hopkins added.

Maryland State Police also responded to the scene.
