Glass Returns Hat In Hand

After vowing not to attend the special session in Annapolis, the Harford County Republican appears and draws attention to himself.

Del. Glen Glass wasn't supposed to be in Annapolis this week.

But the man in the straw hat and dark sunglasses that made an appearance in the House Ways and Means Committee bore a striking resemblance to the Harford County Republican.

Early in July, Glass issued a statement declaring he would on gambling. Three weeks later, Glass issued another statement saying he was sticking to his guns—.

And yet, on Monday there he was looking a little like Conan O'Brien meets Dennis Hopper.

"It is my understanding that important issues other than gambling, such as pit bulls and gun rights, may now be on the agenda during the special session," Glass said in a statement. "I feel that I have no choice but to be in Annapolis to vote on these important issues. The pit bull issue is one of major concern since I am myself a responsible pet owner and Marylanders are being forced out of their homes by their current landlords who face new liability issues under a recent court ruling. Because my constituents and I love animals, I have to fight for them. I am an avid supporter of Second Amendment rights, and it is always an emergency when gun ownership is under attack."

The House is expected to take up bills expanding gambling and attempting to overturn a Court of Appeals ruling that .

The gun bill the delegate referenced was sent to the the Senate Rules Committee where it is not expected to see the light of day before legislators leave Annapolis.

Glass, in his statement, repeated his belief that the "special session is for emergencies only, and the expansion of gambling does not constitute an emergency.”

There was no explanation for the hat.
