Smoke Detector Saved Lives on Crocker Drive

The Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company provided free smoke detectors in a partnership with Harford Mutual.

A smoke detector saved lives in .

That is what Bel Air Commissioner Edward Hopkins said at a June 14 work session, and again at the June 20 town meeting.

The , of which Hopkins is a member, extinguished a Crocker Drive blaze with no injuries June 1. With the resident of the source apartment, , Hopkins said the smoke detector alerted the neighbors to call 911.

“From time to time the guys from the firehouse have gone door-to-door and provided smoke detectors to people that don’t have them,” Hopkins said. “Well they actually provided one to the apartment that caught on fire [on Crocker Drive].”

The fire company is in a partnership with Harford Mutual to provide the devices.

“That smoke detector, according to Harford Mutual, who insured the property, was responsible for alerting other residents in the area to the fire,” Hopkins said. “The smoke detector was a good endeavor.”
