WHIZ KID: Burrows Brings Goodwill to Peers

This elementary-schooler sometimes asks for birthday donations for charity instead of gifts for himself.

Accomplishment:

Key to awesomeness: This straight-A student is a part of band, chorus and student council as well as many other activities. In third grade, Burrows was one of three students to help implement “Waste Free Wednesdays,” encouraging students to pack environmentally friendly lunches.

In fourth and fifth grade he and three other students—“The Green Gals and Jake”— researched and presented information to create a rain garden at their school. He also collects items that are sent to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and has been known to ask for donations instead of birthday gifts to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the Johns Hopkins Children Center.
