WHY
Dedicate your spring break to doing good, and have fun with like-minded students from across the country while doing it.

It is a disturbing fact that families are among the fastest growing homeless groups. In central Maryland, the cost of housing is unaffordable for many. A person earning minimum wage would have to work 3.3 full-time jobs to afford fair-market rent on a two-bedroom apartment here. A startling 29 percent of adults in homeless families are employed. In addition, more than 325,000 central Marylanders don’t have access to healthy food.

“I did an Alternative Spring Break in Haiti and it was a great experience,” said Jordan Willis of Hampton University, one of UWCM’s 2013 Alternative Spring Break participants. “It’s strange to see the same problems closer to home. I get the same feeling now, as if I am making a difference in someone’s life.”
