State Police Collecting Books For OK Tornado Victims' School

A North East elementary school student started the drive following the May tornado in Moore, OK.

The Maryland State Police Bel Air Barrack will be collecting books this weekend for students in a community recovering from a tornado.

Books can be dropped off Saturday or Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to go to school libraries in Moore, OK.

On May 20, an EF5 tornado hit Moore, leveling an elementary school, damaging two others and killing 23, The Huffington Post reported at the time.

Lauren DeCourcey, 8, a student at the Tome School in North East, has collected 4,000 books so far with the blessing of Moore Public Schools officials. Churches and businesses have donated to the cause, according to a state police release.

When state police officials heard of the effort, Bel Air Barrack Cmdr. Matthew
Kail spoke with UPS officials, who offered assistance getting the books collected this weekend to Oklahoma, according to the release.
