Harford County Sheriff’s Office Holds Correctional Officer Graduation

On April 4, 2013, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office celebrated the graduation of 5 recruits of the Correctional Officer Entrance Level Class 22 at the John Carroll High School Auditorium.           

During the ceremony, Sheriff Bane addressed the recruits offering them words of support and encouragement.  Specifically, he emphasized the highs and lows every correctional officer experiences during their career and the necessity of maintaining 4 key elements in their lives.  The Sheriff then outlined the importance of self improvement, health, mental and physical well being, and family.  The keynote address was given by former Harford County Detention Center Warden, Richard A. Lanham.  Mr. Lanham started his career in 1959 with the Baltimore City Police Department.  Before coming to Harford County, Mr. Lanham served as the Commissioner of Corrections from 1990 –1999.  He was responsible for the operation, management and security of 26 prison facilities located throughout the state, with 6500 employees and 22,000 inmates.           

Prior to the presentation of diplomas, several awards were given.  The first was the Firearms Proficiency Award given to Dep. Jeremy Walker for receiving a perfect score of 100.  Next the Sheriff presented the distinction of Class Valedictorian to Dep. Andrew Watkins.  Lastly, Dep. Kyle McCurry was selected to place the class ribbon on the training academy’s Guide On flag.  Dep. McCurry was selected for his “his ability and desire to do his best…believes success of the unit is more important than individual accomplishment.”           

Finally, diplomas were presented to Dep. Brian Hanley, Dep. Nicholas Lastner, Dep. Kyle McCurry, Dep. Jeremy Walker, and Dep. Andrew Watkins (with honors).  Certificates were also awarded to two Aramark employees, Alexander Bond and Meghan Brown, who completed portions of the class.
