Crews Battle Field Fire in Fallston: Officials

Attempted Murder Charge After Botched Bel Air Burglary

Police said the homeowner fought the accused burglar with a baseball bat.

A Bel Air man has been charged with attempted murder in an attempted break-in and stabbing in the Village of Thomas Run neighborhood during the weekend.

Sean Michael Certeza, 24, of the 1800 block of Oxford Square in Bel Air, was arrested and charged on Nov. 20 with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and a weapon charge.

The charges stem from an incident early Sunday, Nov. 18.

Around 6:15 a.m., a woman living in the 1800 block of Glendale Lane told her husband she heard noises in the basement of their townhome, according to a statement from the Harford County Sheriff's Office. The husband then went to the basement, where he saw someone outside the basement door, police said.

The resident went upstairs, got a baseball bat, then went to the backyard and confronted the other man, hitting him with the bat, according to police.

The two men struggled on the ground and the suspected burglar cut the resident in the shoulder, police said.

That night police brought Certeza in for questioning and he confessed to the attempted break in and assault, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies later searched his home and found evidence linking him to the crime.

Certeza lives in the same neighborhood as the victims. He was being held at the Harford County Detention Center Tuesday afternoon in lieu of $300,000 bail.

Ithii guess some people think we shouldn't judge a person who runs around a neighborhood being a hoodlum freak...however; get used to me judging people. Everyone does it! He's a weirdo and always has been and always will be. && I'm not judging if I know the freak! This has been a long time coming but his mom always bailed him out of hisscrew ups and now she can't because she would most likely lose her house. And any gun can kill someone...how can u say its just a gun??
Gil November 21, 2012 at 03:18 PM
Clearly his law breaking activity is displaying increasing violence. He will stop when he either kills someone or he is killed in the process of his problem.

I know even a .22 or .25 can kill very easily, it does not matter the caliber of handgun just wanted to let everyone know it was not an assault rifle I have been into target and competition shooting for 23 years and I am aware of firearm ballistics. There needs to be stiffer penalties for criminal that use firearms in the commission of a crime and people need to make sure the firearms they own are secured and the having propper training and practice regularly. A firearm is just as dangerous to the owner is they are not trained on how to use it.

I saw that too, I thought it was very ironic.

Lolol great read on the comments section. From everyone going HAM on this kid to the war lesson i just got about smaller caliber guns. All signs point to he should be locked up and helped. Seems safer for society for him to seek some sort of (forced) reform.

Sean also has a habit of vadalism. He enjoys cutting open the tops of convertibles and stealing the contents! My friend knows this first hand! I hope he rots!
Lisa November 21, 2012 at 06:09 PM
I couldn't agree with you more! ^^ It's so funny how many people have their own opinions on this kid and they have NO idea what happened. I guarantee half the people judging him have done drugs and stupid things in general. In NO WAY does this make it okay what he did, but honestly, Sean is a great son, brother, and uncle. It's ashame what drugs can do to people. Unfortunatley, Sean is just another statistic.... Prayers go out to his family and the victims family.

I am so frustrated I spent my time reading these comments! Won't do this again

Sean is just part of the drug problem, he deserves about 20 years in the pokey and will probably get it....how bout all the "adults" who doctor shop and use the black market to get their pills, difference between them and Sean is they have the money and keep the facade up of a solid citizen, but there as hooked on drugs as Sean. Huge pill problem in our society now with the so called adults....probably a couple on this forum who post have a secret pill problem.....just saying.....its prevalent at all levels of society.

Sean was NOT let down by ANYONE in his community, county or state - FYI; you cannot help someone who is unwilling to help themselves. NO ONE will ever know ALL of the facts of this case, except for Sean & his victims. I have known Sean for over 10yrs, and he suffers from "terrible demons". I'll stop there. I wish nothing but peace and piece of mind for his victims, their families, and to Sean's friends and loved ones, ESPECIALLY his mother. I hope that this is the "wake up call" that he has so desperately needed for years to turn his life around and learn how to make better choices. He has confessed to this crime, which is the 1st step. He will be held accountable for his actions, and he has NO ONE to blame but himself. To "Mort Feldstein": How DARE you blame the victims of Sean's previous home invasion conviction for ANYTHING! I am appalled at your ignorance, Sir. A terrified, 12yr old babygirl cannot sleep, and that is her MOTHER'S fault? "Mr. Feldstein", my wish for YOU is that you get a clue.

Parents do the best they can, but there is a time when we have to top blaiming them and place the blame solely on the person with the drug problem. This kid is in his 20's and is totally responsible for his own actions. How do you know that the parents are totally responsible? Now, if they bail him out, then we can place the blame on them...until then, let's place blame where it belongs. This kid himself.

There are a few of you who really need to research drug and alcohol addiction before you run off at your keyboards. Drug and alcohol use are no excuses for any type of behavior, it causes havoc in families, communities, personal and professional lives. Most times the person with the addiction has to fall, and fall hard. Maybe this will be a wake up call for this kid, maybe not. Everyone has to reach their personal bottom to come back to the top. I hope this kid has hit his so that he is no longer a danger to his family and our community. I am glad our Sheriff's officers were able to get this handled quickly, but I feel that we need more of a police presence in all of our neighborhoods to show that we, as a community are not going to tolerate the level of violence that is rising here in Bel Air. I pray for the victim in this case, and his family that they can have peace now that he is off the street, and I hope to God no one posts bail. Let him sit in jail for his crime.

Right on Diane, We never know what our children are going to have to face or what they will get into. With the world like it is today it's more easy to see why some fall into these trap's and some are just not as strong as others so people please watch what you say this is someones son, just thank God it wasn't yours..
laura smith November 26, 2012 at 02:13 AM
I fully agree.....I'm sure the peeps who say Sean is a scumb bag are the same people who were nice to him to his face and acted like a friend.....Prayers for all families involved....I would not wish this on my worse enemy.....

Sad to say Harfordlifetimer, his mother wasn't doing drugs....why bring parents into this?

Honestly, just so you guys know... this kid is a known POS with everyone our age. He has drugged girls multiple times at our local bars. People think it is all pills--once you can't afford pills anymore you go to heroin. It is cheaper/ easier to come by. This guy deserves everything he gets. Stop feeling so sorry for him. He wouldn't feel bad if he could use/abuse you like he has everyone he has come in contact with. His mom is an enabler for bailing him out. I hope parents open their eyes to the sketchy kids in this community.
peaceandlove November 26, 2012 at 01:33 PM
When did he get bailed out of jail for this crime?
WEUSEDDRUGSTOGETHER November 27, 2012 at 02:25 AM
"I can't believe you have all made this a social network to bash people." (No, this is a collection of people that Sean has noticeably rubbed off on and we all know the kid is dick.) This is NOT a place to poste(sp*) peoples names and addresses. (True, but hundreds if not thousands of kids have been to this kids house over the years. And at his moms house as well before that.) Many lives have been afftected here and they need a little respect and kind words, Not harsh nasty words. (I know kids that Sean has robbed, bullied and pushed around in the past. Girls too that he has taken advantage of, not to make a attempt to diminish the feelings that his mom might be going through, but sean did need someone to shake him up. Maybe shout some negative things in his face to make him change how he felt.) "Ever think that maybe both families need prayers! Even the person that did the crime should receive prayers." (No only the gentlemen that was attacked by sean deserves "prayers") "NO one on here knows the entire story" (Mam, and i know this is a woman. You have no idea) "and therefore should keep their personal comments to themself!" (Im glad hes in jail, this is like seeing the village oaf in the stockades and now we can throw fruit at him and recognize him for the filth he is.) Let me be the first to offer my prayers to EVERYONE involved!

Just read the Maryland Judiciary Search for this guy, he's toast this time I suspect. A trend is a trend until it ends. This one is headed for conclusion..
Gil November 28, 2012 at 03:34 PM
So let me see if I follow your logic, became seaguel. Guy attempts to break into someones home but is discovered by the homeowner who clubs the perp with a baseball bat. Bandit then pulls a weapon, a knife, and slices the homeowner. And the guilty party in your mind is the homeowner attempting to protect his home and family? I understand the problem much better now. People like you are the problem. With that logic, your day will come.
im just sayin November 29, 2012 at 02:17 PM
Years and years ago I new this kid and ill tell you now he was sober then and he we still a creep! Ive always kept my distance. He was born bad! No hope for him!
NW Manor February 13, 2013 at 09:11 PM
I don't know if this has been said already...there are so many comments. But has anyone noticed how the break-ins in the area (Thomas Run and Tudor Manor) have completely stopped since this loser has been caught? I hope they will be able to link him to those as well.
Payforwhatyoudo March 07, 2013 at 12:42 PM
Good news. This worthless piece of dog sh*t plead guilty and took a 30 year sentence. They should have locked his spineless, enabling mother away too.
