Port Deposit Man Killed in Jarrettsville Barn Collapse

The structural collapse occurred at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

UPDATED (10:18 p.m.)—A Cecil County man died in a barn collapse Wednesday afternoon in Jarrettsville, the Harford County Sheriff's Office reported.

Daniel Paul Dixon, 32, of Port Deposit, was in the hayloft performing roof work at 3 p.m. when for unknown reasons, the roof shifted and collapsed, trapping him between the roof and the floor, according to the report.

Dixon's coworkers called 911 and reported the incident, which occurred in the 3400 block of North Furnace Road, the sheriff's office said. His coworkers attempted to use a skid loader to lift the roof off him but were unsuccessful, the report stated.

Sheriff's deputies, the Harford County Technical Rescue Team and firefighters from Jarrettsville, Fallston and Aberdeen responded to the scene, where Dixon was pronounced dead at 3:25 p.m., according to the report.

After Maryland Occupational Safety and Health conducted an assessment of the scene, firefighters cleared the rubble, and Dixon's body was removed from the structure at 5:40 p.m., the report stated.

The body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy, and Maryland Occupational Safety and Health will handle the investigation, according to the sheriff's office, which was previously handling the case.

UPDATED (4:45 p.m.)—A man in his 30s died in a barn collapse Wednesday afternoon in Jarrettsville, the Harford County Sheriff's Office reported.

The man, who has not yet been identified, had been working in the building, according to the report, which stated he was pronounced dead at 3:25 p.m.

First responders were called for a structural collapse in the 3400 block of North Furnace Road at 3:09 p.m. Wednesday, according to Eddie Hopkins, spokesman for the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

Hopkins said the Harford County Technical Rescue Team and firefighters from Jarrettsville, Fallston, Bel Air and Aberdeen responded, finding a man trapped in the attic under the roof of the one-and-a-half story building that had collapsed.

Firefighters were working to stabilize the structure so they could recover the body, Hopkins said at 4:35 p.m. 

The Harford County Sheriff's Office was investigating the cause of the collapse, and Maryland Occupational Safety and Health was notified.    

Original report (3:55 p.m.)—One person was "gravely injured" in a fire in which a barn collapsed after 3 p.m. Wednesday, Harford County Fire & EMS spokeswoman Jennifer Chenworth Price said.

There was a person trapped inside the barn, located in the 3400 block of North Furnace Road in Jarrettsville, according to Price.

Jarrettsville Fire Company, Harford County Technical Rescue Team and other Harford County fire companies were on the scene as of 3:45 p.m., Price said.
