Driver Who Crashed into Edgewood Home Had Medical Emergency: Officials

Citizens were evacuated from their homes after a vehicle struck a light pole and a residence in Edgewood Tuesday, officials said.

At 11:40 a.m., deputies responded to a reported vehicle into a building and found a man unresponsive behind the wheel of a Ford Explorer that crashed into the left side of a townhouse in the 1900 block of Brookside Drive, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

Because a residential gas line had been hit, natural gas was leaking into the surrounding area, according to the sheriff's office, which reported a fire had started below the vehicle and its engine was racing.

Deputies rescued the driver and moved him to safety, according to the sheriff's office.

Paramedics took the driver, who was in stable condition, from the crash site to Upper Chesapeake, Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company reported at approximately 12:30 p.m.

The driver had suffered a medical emergency as he was leaving his home, causing him to lose control of his vehicle, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

The house where the crash occurred was unoccupied at the time, according to the sheriff's office, which was working to locate the resident.

Deputies began evacuating people from nearby homes as utility crews and first responders cleared the scene, according to the report.

Residences in the 1900 block of Brookside Drive were evacuated, and the road was closed between Tree Top Drive and Gateway Road, according to Joppa-Magnolia, which said its crews joined Abingdon, APG, Bel Air, White Marsh and Kingsville in standing by until BGE arrived.

BGE was working to resolve the issue and residents would be allowed to return to their homes soon, the sheriff's office reported at approximately 2:15 p.m.

Just before 3 p.m., Joppa-Magnolia said fire personnel had cleared the scene, BGE had resolved the gas leak issue and residents should be able to return upon BGE's approval.
