Suspect Still at Large After 3 Edgewood Schools Go on Lockdown: Sheriff's Office

The Harford County Sheriff's Office said a would-be burglar kicked a resident in the knee, then ran away.

A burglary gone awry resulted in three Edgewood schools being locked down Wednesday afternoon, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office, which reported the lockdowns were lifted at 2:45 p.m. and the suspect was still at large.

At about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, a resident in the 200 block of Oak Street in Edgewood was leaving his residence through the rear porch when he saw a man enter through the back door, the Harford County Sheriff's Office said.

The resident tried to push the suspect out the door, but the man kicked him in the knee and ran away, according to a report from the sheriff's office.

The victim received medical treatment at the scene and was taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for a knee injury, according to the report.

The suspect was described as a black man in his 20s, of a thin build, wearing a black shirt and blue jeans. He was reportedly seen running in a wooded area near the railroad tracks.

As K-9 officers and the Maryland State Police helicopter searched the area for the man, three schools were placed on lockdown, the sheriff's office said: Deerfield Elementary School, Edgewood Middle School and Edgewood High School.

Students participating in P.E. classes outdoors were asked to go inside, according to the sheriff's office.

When Edgewood High School dismissed for the day, walkers headed for Pine and Oak streets, and Cedar Lane were reportedly held back. The sheriff's office said a similar precaution would be used for other schools.
