A Harford County Sheriff's Office deputy was hospitalized Wednesday.

UPDATE (10:37 a.m., March 2)—Three men allegedly broke into an Edgewood home on Wednesday and a Harford County Sheriff's Office deputy was injured in a struggle to arrest them, police announced.

William Joseph Fleming, age 24, of Kingsville, was apprehended at the scene and arrested on a Harford County Circuit Court warrant for drug charges, according to online court records. He has not been charged in connection with the alleged Wednesday break-in, but police say charges are pending.

Around 10:20 p.m., a breaking and entering was reported on the 1800 block of John Drive in Edgewood, according to a release from the .

Deputies arrived and surrounded the home when they heard a scream coming from inside, the release states.

Deputies then forced their way into the home where they found three suspects, including who tried to run.

Two of the suspects were taken into custody while the third jumped through a plate glass window to escape, according to police.

DFC Tyler Vass, a two-year veteran of the sheriff's office sustained a serious cut to the arm while trying to detain the third suspect, according to police. He was taken to John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center by Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company ambulance for treatment where he was in serious but stable condition at 1 a.m. Thursday.

Vass was released from the hospital shortly before 5 a.m. Thursday.

Fleming remained in custody at Friday where he was being held in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Charges are pending against the Fleming and the other two individuals in connection with the incident, according to the sheriff's office.

Hang in there, Tom and I are praying for you.

Hope he makes a full recovery. By the way this is a burglary not a robbery, therefore it would be a burglar he was trying to apprehend. There is a difference learned this in my criminal justice class a few weeks ago.

very good catch. Definitely something most people wouldn't pick up on.

Where did the suspect Fleming live in Kingsville ?
Emily Kimball March 02, 2012 at 06:13 PM
Pat, his block address for Kingsville has not yet been released. Online court records show him as a former resident of Edgewood and Rosedale. His current Kingsville block address will likely not be made available until he has been charged with this most recent incident.

Colin, you're correct in making a distinction between burglaries and robberies. It becomes fuzzy, however, if suspects interact with a victim during a burglary. If something was taken directly from the victim who screamed, then it looks more like a robbery. In the updated version of this article, we're just calling it a break-in. We'll be able to identify better what happened after charges go through and the investigation is more developed.

He was in serious but stable condition at 1 am. But then he was released 4 hours later....? Great reporting Patch! Sure would be nice to find out about the victim.

Probably took the wrong path when tax dollars would not pay for birth control while he was at law school.
