Dog Led To Friday Route 1 Crash

A head-on collision on Route 1 Friday caused traffic delays and sent four people to Baltimore hospitals.

Two vehicles collided head-on during rush hour Friday just west of the Conowingo Dam on Route 1 after one driver swerved to avoid a dog in the road.  Four people were injured and two of them were taken by helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore.

Adam Abel, 34, of Dover, DE, was driving a 1994 Ford Explorer on Route 1 South in the area of Smith Road just before 5 p.m., Friday, when a dog moved into the roadway, according to Lt. Charles Moore with the Maryland State Police Bel Air Barrack.

The Explorer, which had a small trailer attached, swerved to avoid the dog and the driver lost control, Moore said. The Explorer crossed the centerline and hit a 1996 Honda Accord head-on, according to Moore.

Abel and his passenger, Tammy Reynolds of Delaware City, DE, were taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore for treatment, according to Moore.

The driver of the Honda, 77-year-old James Hanning of Conowingo and his passenger, 50-year-old Patrick Hanning also of Conowingo, were transported by medevac helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore.
