Dundalk Man Indicted On Bel Air Murder Charge

While Victor Colbert was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Thursday, that hearing was cancelled in light of his indictment in connection with the December 2012 murder of a Bel Air man.

A Dundalk man was indicted Tuesday in connection with the December murder of another man inside his Bel Air apartment.

Victor Levi Colbert, 32, of the 100 block of William Wade Avenue, was indicted Tuesday on charges of first-degree murder and wearing or carrying a dangerous weapon with intent to injure.

Due to a glitch in the system, Colbert was scheduled for a preliminary hearing Thurdsay in the initial district court case. Harford County District Court cases are typically considered closed after indictments. Because of this mistake, the hearing did not take place.

The murder charges stem from an early December 2012 incident in town. Police found 52-year-old Rodney Holmes Smith dead in his apartment in the 200 block of Baltimore Pikeon Dec. 9. Charging documents state he sustained stab wounds to the neck and the cause of death was sharp force trauma.

At Colbert's December bail hearing, Assistant State's Attorney Kemba Lydia-Moore said a latent finger print matching Colbert was taken from a vodka bottle inside Smith's apartment.

"I cannot control the charges trumped up against me," Colbert said during the December hearing. "There are clearly loopholes in this case."

Colbert's is currently on parole for drug possession with the intent to distribute and is on probation for a separate instance of drug possession with intent to distribute and attempted robbery, Lydia-Moore said.

Charging documents indicate illegal drug sales may have brought Colbert to Smith's Baltimore Pike apartment the night Smith died.

A bail review hearing was scheduled to take place in Harford County Circuit Court at 9 a.m. Friday.
